Japan’s export boom did not close the gap

September exports rose 16.7%, but imports grew 18.9% and the deficit reached ¥536.6 billion. AI demand is real; the broader external balance is not a clean risk-on or yen signal.

Dated research, not live quotes. Individually dated October 21 contract lasts and explicitly labeled same-month proxies. Bid/ask snapshots have no independent clock; no settlement or fill claim. Research views and scenario estimates are separate from simulated positions and performance.

Japan’s export boom did not close the gap

Research cutoff: 2026-10-21T04:08:56.000Z. Comparison cutoff: 2026-10-20T22:08:51.594Z. The four-month research horizon remains 18 October 2026–18 February 2027, with earlier contract exits where documented. All eighteen board rows, five open paper positions and zero pending orders were reviewed.

Decision: Hold two NNQZ26 longs, two M2KZ26 shorts, five MZCH27 corn longs, six MZLH27 soybean-oil longs and two MNGH27 gas longs. Add zero, trim zero, exit zero, reverse zero and enter nothing new. No economic transaction is authorized; the paper workflow only refreshes dated valuation marks.

The new information: stronger trade, weaker signal

Japan’s primary September release showed exports of ¥10.972 trillion, up 16.7% year on year, while imports reached ¥11.509 trillion, up 18.9%, leaving a ¥536.558 billion deficit. Exports therefore missed the Reuters consensus of +20.1% and the deficit was about ¥355.6 billion wider than the reported ¥181 billion expectation. AI and semiconductor demand remains supportive, but faster import growth and the miss prevent a clean “buy Japan” or “buy yen” inference. Japan Customs/MOF primary release; Reuters consensus context.

Reuters’ early Asian report described MSCI Asia ex-Japan up about 1.5%, Korea roughly 4% higher and the Nikkei about 1.3% higher. These were article-time indications, not session closes or execution prices. Reuters Asian markets. The practical reading is narrow: the AI demand channel remains alive, but the macro external balance is not broad enough to justify chasing the regional risk-on move before Japan CPI and US mega-cap earnings.

Equity and rates book

At exact dated lasts of NNQZ26 29,923 and M2KZ26 2,785.0, the reduced two-leg equity book has illustrative combined bull/base/bear net outcomes of +$1,818.80 / +$558.80 / −$1,941.20 under 30/40/30 analyst weights and explicit future exit-cost reserves. Expected contribution is +$186.80, but moving only five probability points from bull to bear removes it. Hold the small positions; do not add.

The Nasdaq leg keeps profitable AI demand exposure while tonight’s Meta, Texas Instruments, IBM and Tesla releases test cash conversion, capex discipline and demand breadth. None had reported at the cutoff. The Russell short retains a financing-cost mechanism but can lose if oil eases, yields fall and earnings broaden. The legs are not dollar-neutral: current directional notionals are about +$11,969 and −$27,850, and no hedge credit is taken.

One December Treasury-note short is the strongest macro challenger in the current screen, with illustrative EV about $359. It remains Watch/Avoid: it repeats the oil/inflation factor already pressuring the equity book, and de-escalation or weak data can reverse that factor. No precise, time-stamped futures expression was established for yen or sterling; UK CPI remains ahead.

Agriculture and energy

Exact micro corn was 475.5¢/bu and exact micro soybean oil 67.26¢/lb. Same-month standard NGH27 2.611/MMBtu is used as a zero-basis paper valuation proxy for the unavailable exact micro quote; it is not represented as an observed MNGH27 trade.

Corn’s five-contract forward EV is $420 with $265 / $227.50 basic/further sensitivity. Harvest delay and the March carry support the position, but October 19 inspections and the last ethanol report do not establish a new demand shock. USDA inspections; crop progress; EIA ethanol.

Soybean oil EV is $288.60, with $153.48 / $63.48 sensitivity. Low September NOPA stocks remain supportive, but high crush shows supply can respond and crude strength does not prove fresh product disappearance. Hold six; add only with evidence of actual inventory rebuilding failure or stronger end demand.

Gas EV is $311, with $102 / −$98 sensitivity. South Central and salt storage tightness preserves a small winter tail, but national storage remains above average and the October 20 CPC outlook stays warm across much of the eastern US in week two. The negative further stress argues against adding, not for exiting an unbroken small-position thesis. EIA gas storage; EIA outlook.

December micro WTI traded $99.26/bbl as Reuters described persistent shipping and infrastructure risk. A one-contract short’s central EV improves to about $138, but basic/further sensitivities are −$46 / −$146. Avoid before the official EIA report; the API draw and conflict headlines are not a complete physical balance. Reuters oil update; EIA schedule.

Four March micro wheat longs at a standard-contract proxy of 656¢ are the strongest agricultural challenger: EV $402, basic $184, further $84, buffered risk about $1,448. Reject for now because market-year inspections remain materially below last year, October WASDE raised projected stocks, and another grain long would duplicate held corn exposure. October WASDE.

Copper: mixed evidence, hard clock

China’s morning physical evidence is new and genuinely mixed. Guangdong inventory fell after prior-day dip buying and premia rose 30 yuan/t, but buying weakened as the outright price rose. North China’s premium fell 20 yuan/t and its purchasing index weakened, with sluggish trading. Guangdong; North China.

LME table data for October 20 show stocks 233,800 tonnes, up 1,625 tonnes, while cash stood $183/t above three-month. Inventory rebuilding and nearby deliverability tightness can coexist; neither alone proves a global surplus or shortage. Westmetall LME table.

At exact MHGH27 6.704/lb, one micro long has EV $129.25 but −$106.50 / −$156.50 basic/further results. Its buffered stop risk, about $1,117, fits the portfolio; the evidence does not yet. Keep a finite Wait until 16:00 UTC / noon Toronto on October 21. Enter one micro only if completed buying or accepted premium volumes and persistent location-adjusted scarcity justify a probability change. Otherwise demote to Avoid/context without extending the clock.

Gold, silver and platinum remain Avoid. Exact smaller contracts fix granularity, not fragile compensation: three one-ounce April gold longs model $100.50 / −$25.50 / −$175.50 EV/basic/further; one March 100-ounce silver short $70 / −$50 / −$150; micro platinum short, using an explicitly labeled same-month standard proxy, has negative central EV. No new flow regime supports entry.

Risk, carry and lifecycle

One whole contract/package fits the normal starter band for each held micro and the copper study. Current-mark buffered stop risks are about $856.88 corn, $1,271.40 soybean oil, $1,545.50 gas, $779.20 Nasdaq and $1,162 Russell across the held sizes under the stated cost conventions. Stops can gap and these figures are not maximum loss. The ledger’s original stops, targets and force-exit dates are unchanged.

Corn December/March/May last references were 461.25/475.5/483.25¢; soybean oil 66.87/67.25/67.50¢. Both curves price carry. Gas December/March/May 3.300/2.611/2.574 embeds winter seasonality. Micro WTI December 99.26 versus March 93.27 embeds $5.99 backwardation. These are nonsynchronous last-trade comparisons, not executable spreads. Equity contracts force-exit November 20; crops and March gas February 12. No automatic roll or invented roll profit.

Simulated portfolio

At the valuation time 2026-10-21T04:15:02.801Z, simulated NAV is $1,003,604.28: cash $1,003,628.38, unrealized −$24.10, and cumulative realized net $3,628.38. The book has 5 open positions, $31,000.00 modeled margin reserves (3.09% of NAV), $81,142.30 gross exposure (0.081× NAV), and $6,110.40 ledger open risk (0.609% of NAV). No correlation offsets are applied and no pending orders remain.

This run records no assumed execution: every position is Hold and no add, trim, exit, reverse or new entry was authorized. The ledger revision refreshes marks using exact dated MZLH27, NNQZ26, MZCH27 and M2KZ26 lasts plus the explicitly labeled same-month NGH27 proxy for MNGH27. Crop and gas marks remain classified as dated/indicative under the ledger’s lifecycle and margin-evidence rules. Historical entries, realized results, stops, targets and force-exit dates are unchanged.

Method and limitations

Scenario endpoints and weights are analyst judgments, not measured probabilities or proprietary scores. Basic sensitivity transfers five probability points from best to worst and doubles applicable remaining friction; further sensitivity shifts endpoints adversely. Whole-contract risk uses 1.25 × stop-distance loss plus modeled costs. Same-contract endpoints embody carry; no extra roll return is invented. Bigdata credits were unavailable in this occurrence, so primary public releases, Reuters reporting and native IBKR market data were used. No real order was placed.

This is research and a simulated portfolio, not personalized investment advice. Futures can gap, require additional margin and lose more than a modeled stop.
