Gold’s outlook worsened. Its entry improved.
Hotter underlying inflation weakens the rate-relief case, but gold’s price fell more than our revised weighted outlook. Enter one small April micro-gold paper starter, hold March SOFR without adding, and avoid chasing the Treasury and corn shorts.
Gold’s outlook worsened. Its entry improved.
Research cutoff: October 14, 2026, 12:15 Toronto / 16:15 UTC. This daily review covers changes since 10:15 UTC, during U.S. trading after the inflation release. The four-month horizon remains February 13, 2027; individual exit dates below respect each contract’s lifecycle.
Decisions first
Enter starter: one April 2027 Micro Gold future, MGCJ27. Hold the existing one March SOFR future, SR3H27; add zero. The gold decision is not a favorable interpretation of inflation. We lowered the optimistic scenario’s probability, but gold’s price fell more than the deterioration in our weighted outlook. That creates enough compensation for one small unit, not a large allocation or an automatic second purchase.
Avoid chasing new Treasury, Nasdaq and corn shorts. Keep copper, oil longs, diesel, gas, broad equities and euro shorts on explicit economic watches. Soy oil/meal improves from Avoid to Wait after new policy assessment, but not to Enter. The wheat/corn pair now has negative modeled value at its higher spread.
The inflation test has happened
September CPI, released at 12:30 UTC October 14, rose 0.6% monthly and 3.7% annually. Core prices rose 0.3% monthly, matching August, and 2.6% annually. Gasoline contributed more than half the monthly headline rise, but shelter and services excluding energy each rose 0.4%; core goods rose 0.3%. This is not an energy-only report, although the monthly core rate did not accelerate further. BLS CPI
The accompanying real-earnings release gives the important counterweight: real hourly earnings fell 0.5% monthly and 0.7% annually. Purchasing-power erosion can restrain spending. It does not prove recession, but it argues against extrapolating unlimited demand-driven tightening. Tomorrow’s retail-sales release is therefore a material test, not a minor calendar item. BLS real earnings
Gold and rate futures weakened following the release. Higher nominal yields and a stronger dollar are consistent with a higher opportunity cost for gold. We have not verified a synchronized post-CPI real-yield change, so we do not present that inference as a measured TIPS move. Gold is not an automatic winner when inflation rises. Contemporaneous market reporting
Our broad four-month regime weights change from 34/30/18/15/3 to 39/22/18/18/3 for persistent inflation, resilient normalization, supply shock, growth break and AI/liquidity disappointment. Inflation and growth damage both gain weight at the expense of a smooth normalization. These are analyst judgments, not measured probabilities; instrument-specific trees below are separate models.

One whole contract or package is tested before ranking. Updated pre-entry NAV is approximately $1.002 million: the usual starter range is roughly $1,002–2,504, the thesis cap about $5,008. Study risk is 1.25 times the meaningful entry-to-stop loss plus disclosed costs. Full friction includes $3.50 commission per side and one adverse tick per side; additional allowances are identified. Gaps can exceed stops and every illustrated adverse outcome.
Gold: why Enter after a worse release?
The mechanism is conditional investment demand and eventual rate stabilization, not a mechanical inflation hedge. Dated World Gold Council evidence already showed strong September ETF inflows coexisting with falling gold as yields, the dollar and futures liquidation dominated. No new ETF flow is invented today. WGC commentary, October 7
The variant view is that the selloff now supplies enough compensation for a modest recovery even with a larger adverse branch. Preserve February 12 endpoints 4,600 / 4,320 / 3,920, but change weights from 30/45/25% to 25/40/35%. The first two branches lose five points each; the restrictive-policy branch gains ten. A single CPI release changes probabilities more convincingly than it establishes entirely new four-month price endpoints.
| February 12 outcome/path | Weight | Price | One MGC net P&L at 4,170.30 study ask |
| Investment demand and less restrictive rate outlook | 25% | 4,600 | +$4,288 |
| Investment support despite restrictive policy | 40% | 4,320 | +$1,488 |
| Policy/dollar dominates; adverse gap through stop | 35% | 3,920 | −$2,512 |
| Weighted result | 100% | +$788 |
The weighted endpoint falls 4,304 → 4,250, a $54/oz deterioration. The ask falls 4,234.40 → 4,170.30, a $64.10/oz improvement. After unchanged $9 full friction, modeled value rises $687 → $788. This is a transparent price-versus-evidence comparison, not a claim of an observed 65% win rate.
One MGC is 10 troy ounces, with a $0.10/oz tick worth $1. At the unchanged 4,050 structural stop, conservative ask-based buffered risk is $1,512.75, about 0.151% NAV. A standard 100oz contract would be ten times larger and fails the starter budget. Eight one-ounce contracts give +$574 EV and $1,267.50 risk, but more commission drag; ten one-ounce contracts give +$717.50 EV versus MGC’s +$788 for equivalent exposure. CME micro gold · One-ounce specifications
Sensitivity limits the size:
• Transfer ten probability points favorable-to-adverse: +$108 EV; additionally double costs: +$99.
• Transfer ten favorable points to an ordinary stop-first outcome: +$238.
• Reduce both base and adverse endpoints by $100/oz: +$38.
• Transfer fifteen favorable points to adverse: −$232.
These are alternative stresses, not independent forecasts or an assertion that every combined shock is survivable. The edge warrants one unit only. A second would double the same uncertain distribution and exceed the usual starter budget at this stop.
Implementation: Enter one April MGC, stop 4,050, hard target 4,600, discretionary review level 4,320, time exit February 12. Reassess earlier if persistent tightening and weakening investment demand invalidate the recovery distribution. With a mechanical 4,320 target in every favorable path, modeled EV falls to +$88 at the conservative ask. That capped version is fragile; the stated plan instead preserves the favorable branch, subject to ongoing research. We do not assume a path that bypasses an already-hit stop.
April avoids a December roll: first-position date March 30, first notice March 31, last trade April 28, 2027. Conservative date bounds are used, not claimed intraday lifecycle clocks. A $6,000 paper margin reserve exceeds twice the retrieved generic $2,320 maintenance figure; it is a model assumption, not a verified current broker initial requirement. CME calendar · AMP margins
SOFR: retain, but acknowledge the damaged thesis
March’s 95.405 implies approximately 4.595% compounded funding for its March–June reference quarter. December–March’s separately observed implied-rate difference widens from 26.5 to 28.5 basis points. This is not guaranteed carry or a literal count of Fed hikes. The September policy projections refer to a different measure and horizon. Fed projections · CME SOFR mechanics
Hold the existing +1 SR3H27 from assumed 95.475, stop 95.100, target 95.850. Exit February 12, before the March 17–June 16 reference quarter and June 15 last trade. The thesis is repricing before the reference period, not a claim about realized settlement within our horizon.
Change probabilities 45/30/20/5 → 30/30/30/10%, retaining February endpoints 95.85 / 95.60 / 95.35 / 94.85. Broad CPI pressure reduces the limited-tightening branch and raises persistent-tightening and gap risks.
| Comparison | Net branch outcomes | EV | Ordinary buffered risk |
| Hypothetical new unit at 95.410; $32 full friction | +1,068 / +443 / −182 / −1,432 | +$255.50 | $1,000.75 |
| Existing lifecycle, entry 95.475; $19.50 cash friction | +918 / +293 / −332 / −1,582 | +$105.50 | $1,191.375 original ledger risk |
| Current mark-forward, 95.405; $16 exit friction | +1,096.50 / +471.50 / −153.50 / −1,403.50 | +$284 | $969.125 |
The entry tick is already embedded in the existing fill and is not charged twice. Original lifecycle EV falls from $355.50 to $105.50. This is a meaningful conviction downgrade. New-unit ten-point favorable-to-gap sensitivity leaves only +$5.50; simultaneous ten-point transfers to ordinary stop and gap produce −$182. Hold, add zero, rather than treating the cheaper price as permission to double the bet.
Underlying inflation plus guidance validating a persistently much higher funding path can justify exiting before the numeric stop. Falling real earnings and already-higher market pricing currently argue for retaining the small lot. The next tests are Beige Book, PPI, retail sales and policy communication.
Gold and SOFR share rate risk; we claim no diversification credit. Ask-study ordinary risk plus original SOFR risk totals $2,704.13, about 0.270% NAV. Gold’s 3,920 gap study plus SOFR ordinary risk totals about $4,329, but simultaneous gaps can be larger. Portfolio limits remain unchanged.
Energy: different curves, different mechanisms
The IEA report was already incorporated in the morning. Its delivery-versus-production distinction remains important, but is not new midday news. Its countercase also matters: higher refinery runs are forecast to create a first-quarter gasoil surplus even while depleted stock cover remains a concern. These are forecasts, not delivered barrels. IEA October report
The latest verified Gulf survey remains October 13, with 329,059 barrels/day of oil shut in. No new quantified Saudi production loss is verified. Today’s CPI establishes past retail-price transmission, not another physical outage. MMA/BSEE
WTI December–March book bounds widen $3.48–3.56 → $3.67–3.74/bbl, while ULSD narrows to $0.3256–0.3285/gallon and gas last-price premium narrows $0.804 → $0.772/MMBtu. Neither these unsynchronized spreads nor a backwardated curve guarantees a profitable roll.
Keep the morning physical probabilities: no new verified flow observation justifies changing them again. Each row is one whole contract; MHO and micro gas use explicitly compatible standard-month proxies.

Avoid crude shorts: negative EV, with much larger disruption-gap exposure than their ordinary stops suggest. Wait crude longs: five points favorable-to-gap turn December EV to −$31 and March to −$205. October 15 EIA delivered stocks, refinery runs and products are the next concrete test.
Wait diesel: genuine 4,200-gallon MHO exists, but one unit’s structural risk is 0.319% NAV, above the usual starter range. Its $3 gap stress is $7,398.48; combining five favorable-to-gap and ten base-to-stop probability points gives −$107.38 EV. No size exception is justified; do not tighten 3.80 merely to fit. Its own returned close is undated and excluded. The $28 friction includes $20.16 of modeled proxy/liquidity allowance above basic commissions/ticks; March MCL includes an extra $3. CME MHO rules
Wait gas: two 1,000-MMBtu micros fit at $1,665.50 risk but yield −$16 EV. October 8 storage, for October 2, remains dated context: national stocks exceeded the five-year average by 68 Bcf while South Central was 2.3% below. Transfer five favorable points to adverse for tighter financial conditions: 30/40/30%, EV +$105.50, risk $1,334.50. Old weights would show +$330.50; another five-point adverse transfer makes −$119.50. Gold offers stronger current compensation. Reassess actual mine operations, ratification and genuinely updated inventories before February 24 expiry; do not revive the old strike uplift.
Agriculture — distinguish proposals, sales and consumption
USDA’s October 14 official notice reports 470,000 tonnes of soybeans sold to China for 2026/27. The official-domain indexed notice was available; direct article retrieval failed and its release minute is unverified. It is not a corn sale or proof of soybean-oil scarcity. FAS notice
The October 13 EPA proposal, newly incorporated here rather than mislabeled new today, would reallocate an additional 770 million RINs of exempted obligations, either across 2026/27 or all in 2027. Comments close December 4. It is neither finalized consumption nor an additional 1.76 billion RINs. Potential biofuel demand is counterevidence to a one-way crop-surplus trade. EPA proposal

Avoid new corn shorts. Move five points from lower to higher corn prices for demand counterevidence; even unchanged probabilities give only +$18 for the standard and −$35 for five micros. Micro corn is 500 bushels, with a half-cent tick, not 1,000 bushels. Avoid the wheat/corn pair at 189: even old weights give −$1.50; the revised relative-demand view is weaker. CME micros
Wait oil/meal, an upgrade from Avoid. EPA shifts five base points to favorable, but five favorable-to-adverse points erase $122.46, leaving −$76.86 EV. Reassess October 15 NOPA crush and oil stocks together. No position is reopened on a proposed rule alone.

ASML’s call prepared remarks add evidence of orders for 2028 and customer interest in later years—not secured 2030 orders. Customer downpayments support demand visibility, while a valuation uplift and unusually profitable installed-base components qualify headline earnings strength. This challenges an imminent AI-demand-collapse short, not the possibility that higher discount rates lower equity prices. No full Q&A transcript is claimed. Company prepared remarks

Euro short — Wait. Current EUR/USD spot 1.11240/1.11245, retrieved around 16:09 UTC without a last-trade clock, is not an exact futures quote. A zero-basis hypothetical three-micro short at 1.1124, stop1.135, endpoints1.07/1.11/1.135/1.16 with 30/35/25/10% weights gives +$52.13 EV, risk $1,125.38, after $66 friction including a modeled basis/liquidity allowance. Five favorable-to-gap points give −$116.63. A 0.005 forward-basis change moves P&L $187.50—more than EV. This rejects the economics without pretending spot equals the actual December future.
