The bond rally reversed the Treasury short
December ten-year Treasury futures rallied to 104.890625 as oil and yields fell and Asian equities sold off. The structural inflation case survives, but the near-term short no longer has positive expected value. Exit the single simulated ZNZ26 contract at the nearest exact-contract reference and keep the book in cash.
The bond rally reversed the Treasury short
Research cutoff: October 13, 2026, 04:05 UTC (00:05 Toronto). Four-month horizon: February 13, 2027.
The overnight market stopped behaving like a one-way inflation trade. December ten-year Treasury futures rallied to 104.890625, oil and the U.S. ten-year yield fell, and Asian equities sold off sharply. The structural case for high rates has not disappeared, but the near-term driver stack behind the simulated Treasury short has reversed.
Decision: exit the entire simulated short one ZNZ26. The exact contract last traded at 104.890625 at 04:04:26 UTC, with a 104.890625 bid and 104.90625 ask. The portfolio's one-tick adverse exit convention therefore assumes a 104.90625 buy-to-cover, matching the observed ask. This is a simulated nearest-price fill at decision time, not an exchange execution.
The closed trade lost $671.875 gross and $678.875 net including both side commissions. Simulated NAV is now $1,001,817.875, entirely in cash. No replacement trade cleared the four-month switch hurdle.
What changed after 22:05 UTC
1. Risk-off buying broke the tactical rates setup
Exact ZNZ26 rose from the prior 104.609375 checkpoint to 104.890625 and reached a 104.921875 session high. The move cleared recent daily highs around 104.78–104.83. Reuters' latest retrieved Asia update reported the U.S. ten-year yield down five basis points to 5.192%, the dollar index down 0.2% and Brent down 1.4%. The page's displayed values are a current news snapshot; its exact revision clock was unavailable. Reuters: dollar, oil and yields
The same defensive impulse hit equities. Reuters reported Asia ex-Japan down 2.4%, South Korea down 6%, Japan down 2.6% and Taiwan down 2%, with semiconductor competition concerns amplifying the selloff. Exact IBKR snapshots near the cutoff showed December Micro E-mini S&P at 7,845.50 and December Micro E-mini Nasdaq at 30,679.75, down 218.5 points. Reuters: Asian market selloff
The old 105.265625 ZN stop had not traded, but that is not a reason to keep a negative-expectation position. From the 104.90625 executable ask, only $359.375 of raw loss remained to the stop. The 101.50 target was 4.91 completed-session 14-day ATRs away; its mechanical 9.5-to-one reward/risk overstated the near-term opportunity.
Illustrative 24–72 hour retain outcomes were deliberately stop-aware, not forecasts:
| Retain scenario | Judgment weight | Exit level | Prospective gross P&L from 104.90625 |
| Relief / safe-haven rally reaches stop | 55% | 105.265625 | −$359.38 |
| Stabilization | 30% | 104.75 | +$156.25 |
| Inflation selloff resumes | 15% | 104.25 | +$656.25 |
Weighted prospective value was about −$52 before costs. Exit is therefore an economic decision, not merely a reaction to an adverse mark.
Re-entry condition: only re-underwrite a short after a rejection of 104.9–105.25 followed by renewed downside through 104.5625/104.50, with inflation and yields confirming. Do not widen the old stop or assume CPI will be hot.
2. WTI weakened and its curve flattened—but a short is still conditional
Exact delayed December and March WTI references were $91.48 and $88.41 near 03:00 UTC, leaving $3.07/bbl of backwardation versus roughly $3.34 at the prior checkpoint. Reuters separately reported front WTI at $92.49 and Brent at $105.35 as prospective Russian diesel supply offset Gulf risk; those front prices are not relabelled as December contracts. Reuters oil update · Farmbucks exact WTI curve
The latest verified BSEE physical baseline remains the October 12 16:00 UTC operator survey: 604,503 b/d, or 29.63%, of Gulf oil production and 531 MMcf/d, or 24.81%, of gas production shut in. That observation preceded this research window; there was no new quantified overnight restart report. BSEE October 12 update
The curve move argues against the earlier long-Dec/short-Mar steepener. An outright normalization short has a modest model edge but discontinuous gap risk. From a 91.50 study entry, one Micro WTI contract with a 96.50 stop risks $500 raw and $625 after the 1.25 buffer; two micros risk $1,250, about 0.125% of NAV. A standard contract risks $6,250 buffered and breaches the 0.50% thesis cap.
Decision: Wait for a verified reduction from the BSEE shut-in baseline and a December failure below 91.50. Do not chase below 90. Persistent backwardation creates adverse roll economics for a short; December cannot be carried through the February horizon without a new roll decision. Any later MCLZ26 position would exit or roll deliberately before its November 19 expiry. EIA petroleum data are holiday-delayed to October 15 at 16:00 UTC. EIA schedule
3. Copper's physical counterevidence strengthened
Exact December Micro Copper traded $6.7400/lb at 04:02:05 UTC; the March midpoint was 6.84675. The 10.675-cent contango does not confirm immediate COMEX scarcity.
Fresh SMM commentary added a concrete physical challenge. At 01:00 UTC, SMM said imported arrivals eased Shanghai availability and high prices suppressed downstream demand; surveyed major-region inventories rose 34,000 tonnes week over week to above 100,000 tonnes. At 03:18 UTC, SMM reported North China cathode discounts widening to an average 310 yuan/tonne and limited downstream inquiry. These are SMM survey observations, not exchange-certified stocks. SMM morning copper · SMM North China spot
Four MHG contracts from the 6.7405 ask to a 6.58 stop risk about $2,054 after the buffer and modeled costs, 0.205% of NAV. A 6.93 objective earns only about $1,847 net, or 0.90R. Size fits; payoff does not.
Decision: Wait. A long needs better nearby-curve confirmation or a substantially better entry. If entered later, December MHG requires exit or new roll underwriting before the internal November 13 management bound.
4. Gold's rebound rejected a clean short
Reuters observed December gold at $4,187.90 around 02:01 UTC. By 04:03:08, exact December Micro Gold had rebounded to $4,212.8, with a 4,212.8/4,213.0 market. The $25 intrawindow recovery is important counterevidence to chasing the early “gold eases” narrative. Reuters gold update
A hypothetical three-MGC short at 4,212.8, stop 4,265 and target 4,095 risks about $1,987.50 buffered and offers about $3,504 net, or 1.76R. That geometry is acceptable, but safe-haven demand, the observed rebound and Wednesday CPI prevent a calibrated positive-expectation case.
Decision: Wait. Do not trade either direction before CPI unless price and real yields provide new confirmation. December gold cannot be carried automatically through February.
5. Grains weakened without a new post-cutoff fundamental release
Exact December corn traded 478.25 cents/bu at 04:01:15 UTC and March 492.50, preserving 14.25 cents of carry. A standard December short to a 532.50 stop risks about $3,398 buffered, above the usual starter ceiling; a five-contract micro proxy fits but offers only about 0.28R to a 460 target. Size repair does not repair the payoff.
March wheat was 680.75 and March corn 492.50. Buying the spread at an executable 188.50-cent bound to a 195 target and 170 stop offers about $301 net against $1,180 buffered risk, only 0.255R. October WASDE raised U.S. wheat ending stocks by 23 million bushels to 740 million while global ending stocks were fractionally lower at 276.0 million tonnes; the trade is rejected on payoff, not a false claim that global stocks rose. Decision: Avoid both the corn re-entry and wheat/corn spread. USDA Crop Progress is due October 13 at 20:00 UTC. USDA calendar

Four-month view and what is priced
The scenario tree shifts modestly toward growth break without declaring the inflation regime over: persistent inflation/policy divergence 35%, resilient growth/normalization 27%, renewed supply shock 18%, growth break 17%, and AI/liquidity disappointment 3%. These are judgment weights, not observed probabilities.
Treasury futures now price more near-term relief than at the prior checkpoint, but the ten-year yield near 5.19% still embeds substantial inflation and term premium. Exiting the short says the next 72-hour edge is gone; it does not say bonds are cheap on a four-month basis. WTI backwardation still prices prompt scarcity, though less than six hours earlier. Copper's COMEX contango and rising Chinese availability argue that global supply risk is already partly reflected in price. Gold's resilience shows safe-haven and investment demand remain strong enough to frustrate a simple real-yield short.
The Nasdaq short is the strongest new challenger because the semiconductor competition shock directly hits the market's leadership. It is not entered because one overnight liquidation is not a four-month earnings or valuation break, and selecting a narrow stop merely to fit the 0.10–0.25% starter budget would be reverse-engineered risk management.

Bottom line
The correct response to the overnight bond rally is to exit, not to defend the original short until its stop. Lower oil and yields plus broad risk-off buying made the next 72-hour retain tree negative, while CPI can produce a large gap in either direction. The structural inflation thesis remains on the watchlist, but the paper book is now flat. Oil, copper, gold, equities, FX and agriculture all offer valid questions; none currently offers a better supported four-month entry.
