Inflation expectations support the Treasury short; EIA weakens the oil signal

September household inflation expectations rose to 3.9% at one year and 3.3% at three years, supporting the one-contract December note short even after a pre-auction rebound. Corn fell to 502.50 cents while positive carry persisted, so the existing short remains a hold, not an add. A 3.2-million-barrel crude draw failed to lift oil because supplied demand fell and the balancing adjustment was unusually negative.

Dated research, not live quotes. Exact IBKR observations at 16:04 UTC showed ZNZ26 104.3125 and November Micro WTI 88.91. Delayed ZCZ26 was 502.50 with ZCH27 517.25 near 16:04 UTC. EIA and New York Fed releases are primary observations; older gold, gas, copper, equity and FX quotes retain their actual 10:05 UTC or earlier clocks. Research views and scenario estimates are separate from simulated positions and performance.

Inflation expectations support the Treasury short; EIA weakens the oil signal

The decision

Fresh U.S. household evidence strengthens the inflation side of the December ten-year note short without justifying more size. The New York Fed's September survey put one-year inflation expectations at 3.9%, up 0.3 percentage point, and three-year expectations at 3.3%, up 0.1 point. Five-year expectations stayed at 3.0%, and labor-market expectations mostly improved. That is persistent near-term inflation, not a fully unanchored regime. New York Fed

December ten-year notes traded down to 103.953125 and then recovered to 104.3125 at 16:04:52 UTC. The new simulated short is therefore modestly underwater, but neither its 105.265625 stop nor its 101.50 target traded. We Hold short one ZNZ26 and add zero before the 13:00 Toronto ten-year auction and 14:00 FOMC minutes.

December corn fell to 502.50¢/bu while March held a 14.75¢ premium. Large September stocks and positive carry still support the existing short, but better ethanol output and Friday's USDA report make adding unattractive. We Hold short one ZCZ26 and add zero.

Ten-year notes: inflation pressure meets live event risk

What changed

The New York Fed survey is directly relevant to a duration position. One-year inflation expectations rose from 3.6% to 3.9%, their highest since May 2023; three-year expectations rose from 3.2% to 3.3%. Job-loss probability fell to 13.5%, unemployment-rise probability fell to 43.9%, and expected household spending growth rose to 5.5%. The disconfirming evidence matters too: five-year inflation expectations remained anchored at 3.0%, earnings-growth expectations softened, and household financial perceptions deteriorated. New York Fed release

Higher yields are already transmitting into demand. The Mortgage Bankers Association reported mortgage applications down 4.2% on the week as its conforming 30-year mortgage rate rose to 7.49% from 7.30%. That does not reverse the inflation signal, but it limits how far we should extrapolate the selloff. MBA

The contract itself did not move in a straight line. ZNZ26 fell to 103.953125 during the 13:00 UTC half-hour, then rebounded to 104.3125 by the cutoff. The exact snapshot showed a 104.3125 bid and 104.328125 ask, 1,549,643 contracts of displayed volume and a 103.953125–104.484375 session range. The rebound is counterevidence and a reason not to add; it is not yet an invalidation.

What is priced in

The official Treasury curve available for 6 October was already deeply restrictive: 2-year 4.79%, 5-year 5.03%, 10-year 5.27% and 30-year 5.64%. The market therefore does not need a new inflation regime for the short to work; it needs supply and inflation premia to remain high enough that the forthcoming auctions and Fed communication do not produce durable duration demand. U.S. Treasury yield curve

Positioning raises squeeze risk. The latest available CFTC report is still the 29 September observation: leveraged funds were heavily net short ten-year notes while asset managers were net long. Those classifications include hedges and basis trades, but they make a strong auction outcome more dangerous to the short. CFTC Treasury positioning

Current-price scenarios to 20 November

Weights are analyst judgments, not measured win probabilities. Outcomes are prospective from the 104.3125 mark and before commissions or gap slippage.

ScenarioWeightZNZ26 exitOne-contract gross P&L
Persistent inflation and supply premium25%101.50+$2,812.50
High-yield range; growth limits further selloff45%103.50+$812.50
Strong duration demand / growth scare30%105.265625 stop−$953.13

Probability-weighted gross value is approximately +$782.81 from the current mark. The target offers 2.95 times the remaining raw stop distance. That supports holding the starter. It does not justify adding immediately ahead of the auction and minutes.

The hard invalidation remains 105.265625. Earlier economic re-underwriting is required if a strong auction and dovish policy evidence produce sustained trade above roughly 104.50–104.75. One tick in that zone is not an automatic exit, and a stop cannot cap a gap.

Corn: the stock cushion matters more than the harvest headline

Balance-sheet arithmetic

September WASDE used 1.922 billion bushels of beginning stocks, 88.5 million harvested acres, 178.5 bushels per acre of yield, 15.800 billion of production and 1.567 billion of ending stocks. USDA September WASDE

The later Grain Stocks report measured 1 September corn at 2.095057 billion bushels, 173.057 million above the WASDE beginning-stock assumption. Dividing that difference by 88.5 million harvested acres gives about 1.96 bushels per acre. In other words, a yield cut from 178.5 to roughly 176.5 would merely absorb the stock revision if acreage and demand were unchanged. A moderate yield cut is not automatically bullish. USDA Grain Stocks

The market still carries grain forward. Delayed readings near the cutoff were ZCZ26 502.50, ZCH27 517.25, ZCK27 524.75 and ZCN27 528.75. December–March carry of 14.75¢ and December–July carry of 26.25¢ do not describe an urgent nearby squeeze. A Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska elevator showed harvest cash corn at $4.61 with a −42¢ December basis, December delivery at $4.72 and January at $4.76; that is local evidence, not a national basis index. ADM delayed futures Frontier Cooperative

Counterevidence

USDA's 5 October crop report showed harvest at 23% versus a 27% five-year average and good/excellent condition down to 54% from 57%. Those bullish inputs are known, not new since the morning review. USDA Crop Progress

Today's EIA data improved the demand side: ethanol production recovered to 1.053 million barrels per day, up 46,000 on the week. Yet it remained below 1.071 million a year earlier, and ethanol stocks at 23.7 million barrels were 4.5% above last year. That supports not adding to the short; it does not erase the stock cushion. EIA petroleum overview

Official export inspections were 1.368 million tonnes in the week to 1 October, down from both the prior week and the comparable year-earlier week, while cumulative inspections remained 4.4% above last year. The demand signal is mixed rather than broken. USDA inspections

Current-price scenarios to 20 November

ScenarioWeightZCZ26 exitIncremental one-contract P&L from 502.50¢
Material yield cut and stronger demand30%532.50¢ stop−$1,500
Stock cushion and ordinary harvest pressure50%485¢+$875
Stable yield / softer demand20%460¢ target+$2,125

Probability-weighted gross value is approximately +$412.50. Remaining target reward is only 1.42 times remaining raw stop risk, so the existing one-contract exposure is enough. Exit or re-underwrite early if Friday's report puts ending stocks below roughly 1.50 billion bushels while basis and calendar spreads also tighten. Do not defend the position merely because the quoted stop has not traded.

Oil: the draw was real, but so was the demand weakness

EIA reported commercial crude stocks down 3.2 million barrels to 424.1 million in the week ended 2 October. Gasoline rose 0.4 million, distillate was essentially unchanged, and total commercial petroleum excluding the SPR fell 6.9 million. Crude was about 1% above its five-year average, gasoline 6% below and distillate 12% below. The product shortage—especially diesel—is the reason to avoid a fresh outright short. EIA

The headline draw was not clean demand acceleration. Total products supplied fell 1.105 million barrels per day week over week. The crude balancing adjustment became −589,000 barrels per day from −238,000, and crude exports jumped 1.195 million barrels per day. November Micro WTI traded $88.91 at 16:04:47 UTC near the session low after failing to hold the inventory-related rally.

WTI's curve remained backwardated: November–December about $0.75 and December–January about $0.80 on asynchronous snapshots. That supports physical scarcity and penalizes shorts that must roll. It does not, by itself, create a long edge when weekly supplied demand is falling and the balance includes a large adjustment.

At $88.91, a simple 30/45/25 long tree at $98/$89/$80 has only about +$55 gross expected value per Micro WTI contract before costs. Reversing that tree does not compensate a short for the upside-gap tail. November expires on 19 October, so it is also a poor vehicle for a four-month thesis. Decision: Avoid short; Wait long; no order.

Cross-asset challenger scan

• Natural gas — Wait. November Henry Hub was $3.234, up 3.85%, with December at $3.524. South Central salt storage is below average, but total storage remained above its five-year average and the 8 October report can reverse a crowded short squeeze. One standard contract can fit a starter stop; the thesis does not yet.

• Gold — Wait. December Micro Gold was about $4,137 after a sharp decline. One micro fits risk, but higher yields and a large existing managed-money long oppose buying before the minutes. Structural official-sector demand opposes a short.

• Copper — Wait. December Micro Copper was near $6.67/lb. China reopening can improve price discovery, but large existing length, rising inventories and mild contango leave no verified physical edge today.

• Equity indices — Wait. MESZ26 was 7,843.25 and NQZ26 31,338.75 near the cutoff, down but well above session lows. A short duplicates the rates shock; a long still pays into high duration sensitivity.

• Euro — Wait. European fiscal and energy vulnerability support a short conceptually, but a fresh exact micro-futures quote was unavailable and another dollar-sensitive short would concentrate the same macro factor as ZN.

• Wheat — Watch, not switch. December wheat fell to roughly 687.25¢ while cumulative inspections lagged last year, but smaller stocks and Black Sea event risk make a fresh short inferior after the drop.

Simulated portfolio

Paper ledger revision 64 marks the existing positions only. No real orders were placed, no capital was reset and no fill was backdated.

Open corn P&L−$100.00
Open ZN P&L−$78.13

The two positions share an inflation/supply-premium theme only partly: corn is a physical-stock and harvest trade, while ZN is a duration/term-premium trade. Both have event gaps inside the next 48 hours, so no addition is justified.

Next 72 hours

• 8 Oct, 04:30: Fed Governor Waller on the outlook.

• 8 Oct, 08:30: weekly jobless claims and USDA export sales.

• 8 Oct, 13:00: U.S. thirty-year auction.

• 8 Oct, 10:30: EIA natural-gas storage.

• 9 Oct, 12:00: USDA Crop Production and WASDE — the main corn invalidation test.

Source and method notes

Primary releases drive the decisions: the New York Fed Survey of Consumer Expectations, EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report, USDA WASDE, Grain Stocks, Crop Progress and export inspections. Contract observations are exact IBKR snapshots or dated delayed operator pages, each retaining its actual clock. Scenario weights are judgmental. Simulated stops cannot cap gaps, daily limits or illiquidity, and prospective values exclude some future slippage.
