Easier Fed odds did not deliver easier financial conditions

Markets cut the probability of another Federal Reserve hike, yet the ten-year yield held near 5.26% and the dollar index near 102. That split matters: it blocks a clean duration or gold entry, while higher wheat/corn relative value makes the best monthly challenger more expensive. Hold one December corn short at a fresh 496.25-cent mark, add zero, and keep new risk flat.

Dated research, not live quotes. Fresh exact-contract or same-month standard-contract observations are timestamped. Direct connected-market observations at 04:01-04:02 UTC include ZCZ26 496.25, ZCH27 510.75, ZWH27 701.25, ZNZ26 104.484375, GCZ26 4,170.60, HGZ26 6.5870 and ESZ26 7,771.75. CLX26 89.99 is a near-month WTI context quote, not a December micro-WTI fill. Reuters spot FX and yields are context, not futures execution prices. Easier Fed odds did not deliver easier financial conditions

Research cutoff: 5 October 2026, 00:05 Toronto / 04:05 UTC

Four-month horizon: through 4 February 2027

Decision summary

The overnight market cut the probability of another Federal Reserve hike to roughly 22%, but the ten-year Treasury yield stayed near 5.26% and the dollar index near 102. That is the important change since the monthly review. A lower policy-path probability has not yet produced easier long-term financing conditions. Duration, gold and equities therefore remain conditional ideas rather than new positions.

The paper portfolio keeps its single December corn short. ZCZ26 traded 496.25 cents per bushel at 04:02:30 UTC, 1.50 cents below Friday's 497.75 settlement. The position is re-marked at that exact-contract observation; the assumed 500.50 entry, 532.50 stop, 460 target and 20 November exit are unchanged. Economic decision: Hold. Paper implementation: retain one contract, add zero. Simulated result: no new transaction; mark-to-market only.

No new futures entry clears both the economic and implementation tests. The strongest monthly challenger—long March wheat versus short March corn—became more expensive overnight. The asynchronous last-price spread widened to 190.50 cents from Friday's matched 185.25 settlement reference, reducing the 205-cent base-case payoff to only about 0.27 times buffered risk.

What changed after the monthly cutoff

• Policy-path relief did not become duration relief. Reuters reported roughly 22% odds of an October Fed hike, yet the ten-year yield remained near 5.26%. ZNZ26 was only modestly firmer at 104.484375. A clean duration long still needs acceptance above 105-08 or a catalyst-driven fall in term yields. Reuters global markets

• The dollar stayed firm for reasons beyond the Fed. Reuters had the dollar index near 101.97 and EUR/USD at 1.1246, with French fiscal risk later pushing the euro lower. This supports the direction of a euro short but worsens entry asymmetry; spot FX is not a December micro-euro fill. Reuters FX

• Corn reopened lower. The exact ZCZ26 observation was 496.25, bid 496.00 and ask 496.25. March corn was 510.75, leaving 14.50 cents of carry against the December last. Carry supports the supply thesis but is not booked income because the portfolio owns no calendar spread.

• Wheat/corn widened. ZWH27 last traded 701.25 at 04:01:23 UTC and ZCH27 510.75 at 03:46:05 UTC. The 190.50-cent calculation is explicitly asynchronous; the indicated buy-wheat/sell-corn spread was about 190.25. No fill is assumed.

• Oil weakened despite route risk. Front-month CLX26 was $89.99 at 04:02 UTC, down 1.23% from the session reference. Saudi Arabia also cut the November Arab Light Asia official selling price by $3 to a $5 discount, while Kpler data cited by Reuters showed seven-day Middle East crude exports around 18.5 million barrels per day on October 1, above an 18 million pre-war reference. Freight compensation and tanker attacks make this a two-sided signal, but it weakens the prompt scarcity thesis. Reuters Saudi pricing · Reuters export flows

• Brazil moved to a runoff. Flávio Bolsonaro led Lula 47% to 45% in the first round, with a 25 October runoff. The result can move BRL and Brazilian equities, but a gap reaction without a risk-defined futures quote is not an automatic trade. Reuters Brazil election

One contract represents 5,000 bushels, so each one-cent move is $50. From the fresh mark, the target and stop are each 36.25 cents away: $1,812.50 gross reward or risk. With the 1.25 risk buffer and $65 modeled friction, forward mark-to-stop risk is $2,330.63, about 0.233% of simulated NAV. This fits the existing allocation, but the now-symmetric reward/stop geometry and Monday physical releases do not justify a second contract.

The 30% target / 45% 490-cent base / 25% stop sensitivity gives a $362.50 forward gross mean before exit costs. Moving ten probability points from target to stop removes $362.50. These are analyst scenarios, not a backtest or a guarantee that a stop limits gap losses.

Leading challengers

March wheat over March corn — Wait

The structural thesis still works: wheat supply is tighter while corn stocks and carry are larger. The price no longer offers enough base-case compensation.

• Current asynchronous spread: 190.50 cents; indicated executable spread about 190.25.

• Entry review: 165–170 cents, or a materially stronger 9 October WASDE balance.

• Scenario tree: 35% at 255, 45% at 205, 20% at 150; weighted 207.50.

• At 190.50, weighted gross value is $850 and about $786 after $64 friction. The 205 base case nets only $697.50.

• Risk to the 150 stop is $2,025 raw and $2,595.25 after the 1.25 buffer plus costs, about 0.259% of NAV. That is slightly above the normal starter range.

The package is equal-bushel, not dollar- or beta-neutral, and it adds another short corn leg to the live portfolio. Wait rather than chase.

March CORRA — Wait, with corrected contract math

The Montréal Exchange contract multiplier is C$2,500 per index point, or C$25 per basis point. That corrects the monthly underwriting, which inadvertently used four times the one-contract sensitivity. March CORRA references the quarter beginning in March and settling in June. Montréal Exchange CORRA contract

At the original 97.025 reference, a 25%/50%/25% tree at 97.250/97.100/96.850 has a weighted 97.075 outcome. For one contract and C$85 modeled friction, expected net value is only C$40. At the Exchange's untimestamped 97.045 display, the same tree is about −C$10. A 96.830 stop creates C$487.50 raw risk from 97.025 and C$694.38 after the 1.25 buffer plus costs. One-contract size fits easily; economics are the veto. Do not label the 97.045 display as a fresh overnight quote.

Gold, oil and copper — Wait

• Gold: GCZ26 was $4,170.60/oz at 04:02 UTC. The monthly 25%/45%/30% tree at 4,700/4,300/3,800 still weights to 4,250, roughly +$785 gross per 10-ounce micro equivalent before costs. The 30% bear tail, firm dollar and high term yields block entry.

• WTI: CLX26 at $89.99 is a November quote, not a December micro-WTI fill. The previous two-MCL December study had only $96 expected net and lost its edge after a three-point bull-to-bear probability shift. Wait for a failed $91.20–$91.80 retest or quantified net supply loss rather than chase the overnight decline.

• Copper: HGZ26 was $6.587/lb. The 30%/40%/30% tree at 7.15/6.65/5.80 weights to 6.545, below the current proxy before costs. China is still closed, so the physical confirmation is incomplete.

Equity, FX and volatility — Wait

ESZ26 was 7,771.75 at 04:02 UTC, roughly flat after Friday's payroll rally. Two MES can fit a 140-point stop, but a February four-month scenario cannot be assigned directly to a December contract without an exit or roll. The absence of duration confirmation argues against buying the headline.

The euro-short direction improved as French fiscal risk strengthened the dollar, but the initial spot decline worsened entry quality and no fresh December futures reference supported an assumed fill. Remain flat.

February Mini-VIX retains a 19.9486 October 2 settlement and only six contracts of volume. Three VXM would consume half that volume, so implementation remains too weak despite acceptable modeled risk.

Invalidation and risk controls

Exit the corn short at 532.50, on a material tightening in the corn balance sheet, or on 20 November, whichever comes first. Do not count curve carry as realized P&L. Do not add before Monday's physical releases merely because the opening price is lower.

For new macro risk, require the actual price confirmation: duration above 105-08, a controlled euro rebound with a named-contract quote, or gold supported by both lower yields and a weaker dollar. For wheat/corn, retain 165–170 as the price review zone unless WASDE materially strengthens the wheat-versus-corn balance.

All results are simulated. Current market observations are research references, not exchange execution confirmations. No real order was placed.
