A confirmed Ecuador outage still does not make oil a chase

Petroecuador confirmed that the SOTE pipeline remained shut after an October 1 fire, declared force majeure and targeted restoration within six days. The notice predates this research window, but it sharpens the physical map: a real constraint without a quantified barrel loss, while Saudi damage remains unconfirmed and Friday's curve has not reopened. Keep Micro WTI flat through OPEC+, hold one December corn short and add zero. No simulated transaction or weekend mark is recorded.

Dated research, not live quotes. All futures references are carried from October 2 with their real clocks: ZCZ26 497.25 cents at 14:19 Toronto plus a separate 497.75-cent USDA AMS final settlement; ZCH27 511.50 in the same final report; CLZ26 $89.43 and CLF27 $87.82 at 16:59; MGCZ26 $4,171.90, TYZ26 104.375, ESZ26 7,776.50, ECZ26 1.1290 and HGZ26 $6.5790 at 16:59. The 13.75-cent December-March corn spread is curve evidence, not booked carry income. Standard CL, ES, EC and HG remain explicit same-expiry proxies where the micro contract was not observed. Research views and scenario estimates are separate from simulated positions and performance.

A confirmed Ecuador outage still does not make oil a chase

Research cutoff: October 4, 2026, 12:00 a.m. Toronto. Futures remained closed throughout this review. Every futures price below keeps its October 2 observation date and source basis; no weekend price, volume or trigger path is inferred. The four-month research horizon remains February 2, 2027, while December contracts retain earlier exit or roll decisions.

The simulated book remains short one December corn contract. No assumed paper transaction or weekend mark is recorded. Portfolio revision 57 remains the source of truth: cash $1,001,475.25, indicative NAV $1,001,637.75, open gross P&L +$162.50, gross exposure $24,862.50, modeled margin reserve $5,000 and ledger open-risk floor $2,019.50. Fresh settlement-to-stop economic risk is higher than that historical floor: about $2,188 after the 1.25 buffer and future exit friction.

1. What changed since 6:00 p.m.

At 22:40 UTC, Reuters reported that Yemen's internationally recognized armed forces said they were conducting strikes against Houthi targets in Sanaa and Saada. Houthi television attributed an earlier strike to Saudi Arabia, which had not confirmed involvement. The new information is further escalation—not a measured oil outage, a verified refinery loss or a change in shipping capacity. Reuters: Yemen forces strike Houthi targets

The more useful physical context comes from Ecuador. Petroecuador said pumping on the SOTE pipeline remained suspended after an October 1 fire at the Baeza station, declared force majeure and targeted restoration within six days, around October 9. The notice straddled the previous research cutoff, so it is incorporated here as context rather than mislabeled as a fresh-window event. The sources reviewed did not quantify how many barrels were shut in, delayed or rerouted. Primicias: SOTE remains suspended · La Hora: restart target around October 9

This distinction matters. Ecuador supplies a confirmed constraint with a stated repair horizon. The Riyadh story supplies a Houthi responsibility claim and observed smoke/fire, but Saudi authorities and Aramco still had not confirmed damage or lost output. Iraq's state tanker company supplied evidence of one successful 2-million-barrel VLCC passage through Hormuz, not proof of general reopening or a continuous 2-million-barrel-per-day flow. Reuters: Riyadh Aramco claim · Reuters: Iraqi VLCC passage

The correct conclusion is narrower than “oil supply was hit.” A localized pipeline stoppage has been confirmed, but its global barrel effect remains unmeasured and the operator has given a repair target. Meanwhile, the most consequential Saudi and Hormuz questions remain unresolved. The first tradeable answer still comes from Sunday's OPEC+ decision and reopened prices.

2. Micro WTI: one whole package fits, but the payoff does not

The latest named December reference remains the October 2 delayed CLZ26 quote of $89.43/bbl. January CLF27 was $87.82, leaving $1.61 of December-over-January backwardation. These are exact standard-contract observations in the same dollars-per-barrel units, used as explicit proxies for Micro WTI; they are not observed MCLZ26 prices. Separately, November WTI settled at $91.11 and December Brent at $102.25. Their $11.14 difference is both cross-benchmark and mismatched-month, so it is not represented as an executable same-month spread. October 2 oil settlement

The current mechanism has three branches:

• Bull: the SOTE restart slips, measured Ecuadorian shut-ins or cargo delays emerge, Saudi damage is confirmed, or Gulf shipping deteriorates.

• Base: Ecuador repairs within its stated window, the Saudi impact remains limited or unverified, partial Hormuz passages continue and OPEC+ holds policy steady.

• Bear: the SOTE restart succeeds, Gulf flows normalize and reserve barrels compress the prompt risk premium.

Using the Friday $89.43 same-expiry standard proxy, the unchanged analyst tree for a potential two-contract MCLZ26 package is:

November 13 terminal outcomeWeightDecember WTITwo-MCL gross P&L
Confirmed sustained disruption25%$98+$1,714
Contained damage; offsetting flows45%$90+$114
No material outage; supply improves30%$82-$1,486

The weighted terminal price is exactly $89.60. That implies +$34 gross and +$16 after $18 of round-trip friction. A $1 worse assumed entry turns expected net value to -$184. Ecuador's six-day repair target belongs inside the existing base case; changing probabilities before reopened prices would manufacture precision.

Sizing does not veto the trade. One Micro WTI contract represents 100 barrels. Two contracts from $89.43 to an economically meaningful $82 stop risk $1,486 raw and about $1,876 after the 1.25 buffer and modeled friction, or 0.187% of NAV. That fits the starter band. The decision is still Wait because the current edge is too small and entry-sensitive.

Finite trigger: re-underwrite after the OPEC+ outcome and the first liquid December–January curve. Enter only if the reopened reference still offers positive net value under plausible no-outage and gap scenarios. Strengthen the long case if the SOTE repair slips, exports are delayed or measured production shut-ins emerge. If the pipeline restarts on schedule, Saudi officials indicate no material loss and backwardation flattens, retire the event-driven long watch. No standing order exists.

3. Corn: hold the existing short; do not add

No new USDA, positioning or trade-flow release appeared after the previous cutoff. Friday's exact ledger mark therefore remains 497.25¢. The separate 497.75¢ settlement reference supports decision math but does not overwrite the book.

The bearish mechanism remains intact:

• USDA counted 2.095 billion bushels of September 1 corn stocks, 35% more than a year earlier. Holding every other September WASDE row constant, substituting that beginning stock would mechanically lift illustrative ending stocks from 1.567 billion to roughly 1.740 billion bushels and stocks/use from 9.68% to around 10.75%. This is sensitivity analysis, not an October forecast. USDA Grain Stocks · September WASDE

• September 29 CFTC futures-and-options data left managed money net long 377,850 corn contracts, down 36,587 on the week. The futures-only dataset is different—net long 381,220, down 22,877—and is not mixed into the combined series. Both snapshots preceded the stocks surprise. CFTC agriculture futures-and-options · CFTC agriculture futures-only

• October 2 observations put December at 497.75¢ and March at 511.50¢, a 13.75¢ deferred premium. May at 518.50¢ added another 7¢ over March. This is evidence of storage availability, not booked income for an outright December short that exits before delivery.

Demand remains the counterweight. Mexico's announced 218,600-tonne purchase included only 173,800 tonnes for the current marketing year, while ethanol grind, harvest weather and a possible October production revision can absorb part of the cushion. The balance is bearish, but not sufficiently asymmetric to double the position.

At the separate 497.75¢ reference, unchanged 30/45/25 analyst outcomes at 460/490/532.50 imply +$306.25 forward gross and about +$290 after exit friction. Moving ten probability points from the target to the stop makes expected net value about -$72. Fresh buffered settlement-to-stop risk is about $2,188. A second whole contract fits mechanically inside the 0.50% thesis cap, but the payoff is too fragile to justify adding.

Decision: Hold -1 ZCZ26; add zero. Keep the 532.50¢ stop, 460¢ target and November 20 exit. The exit precedes CME's November 24 first-holding date, November 27 first-position date and November 30 first notice. Any four-month continuation must be freshly underwritten in March corn. Several micro expressions fit. What is missing is a lifecycle-matched payoff that survives a modest change in entry price, scenario weights or the path to the endpoint.

Four-month outlook

• October–November: harvest supply and residual speculative corn length favor the existing short. Oil remains dominated by measured physical losses, reserve implementation, refinery disruption and shipping access.

• December–January: corn becomes more balanced as harvest pressure fades; exports and South American weather matter more. The current December contract cannot be carried through the February research horizon.

• Macro: weak payrolls reduced immediate Fed-hike pressure but did not establish a durable duration or gold rally. High long-end yields and energy risk still constrain clean beta trades.

Method and limitations

Scenario weights are analyst judgments, not measured win probabilities. Delayed Friday references are dated research inputs, not weekend executable prices. Standard CL, ES, EC and HG observations are disclosed proxies for smaller contracts. A force-majeure notice does not quantify lost barrels; one tanker voyage does not establish a continuous flow rate; a responsibility claim does not establish lost output. Stops can gap, and terminal scenarios are not stopped-path simulations. Paper positions and fills are simulated; no real order was placed.
