Harvest the oil/meal gain; keep the euro short without adding
Exit the full three-pair soybean-oil/meal package after favorable overnight repricing consumed its forward edge; the ledger treats the 3:3 basket as one indivisible package, so a one-pair trim is unavailable. Hold the eight-contract Micro Euro short. Latest references imply about $604 gross open P&L before the assumed exit. Rising U.S. yields support the dollar thesis, but substantial tightening is already priced, so no add. Avoid chasing oil, rates, equities or gold.
Harvest the oil/meal gain; keep the euro short without adding
Research cutoff: September 29, 2026, 12:06 a.m. Toronto
Review window: developments since September 28, 6:05 p.m. Toronto
Economic decisions: Exit the full +3 March Micro Soybean Oil / −3 March Micro Soybean Meal package; hold −8 December Micro Euro futures; no new entry.
The overnight move improved the paper book but weakened the next-dollar economics of its agricultural spread. Synchronized March standard-contract proxies reached 68.51¢/lb for soybean oil and $356.90/short ton for meal at 11:54 p.m. Toronto. That marked the 3:3 basket at +$374.40 gross, yet the unchanged forward scenario tree had slipped to approximately −$95 expected value and only 0.69× target-to-stop payoff. Because the ledger records the three pairs as one indivisible package, a one-pair trim is unavailable. The economically consistent action is a full simulated exit.
The euro short remains open. Exact delayed M6EZ26 was 1.1399 at the same timestamp, leaving it +$230 gross and inside its unchanged 1.1550 stop and 1.1150 target. Higher U.S. yields support the thesis, but substantial Federal Reserve tightening is already priced and September 30 PCE can reverse the move. Hold; do not add.
After the assumed agricultural exit, paper NAV is $1,000,106.75, cash is $999,876.75, cumulative net P&L is +$106.75, and buffered open risk is approximately 0.167% of NAV. One position remains. No real orders were placed.
Paper decisions and implementation
| Exposure | Latest reference | Economic decision | Simulated implementation |
+3 MZLH27 / −3 MZMH27 | 68.51¢ / $356.90 synchronized standard proxies | Exit | Assumed closes: 68.48¢ oil and $357.20 meal after adverse valid-tick treatment |
−8 M6EZ26 | 1.1399 exact delayed | Hold; no add | No new fill; retain 1.1550 stop, 1.1150 target and November 30 exit |
The oil and meal references are same-month standard contracts in the same quoted units, not observed micro executions. CME states that Micro Agriculture settlements equal the corresponding standard-contract settlements, including values that are not valid micro trading increments. The paper engine therefore applies conservative valid-tick treatment at the actual decision time while preserving the 11:54 p.m. source observation. CME Micro Agriculture FAQ
The agricultural close realizes $360 gross and $318 net after the $21 entry and $21 exit commissions already modeled by the ledger. This is a simulated assumed-nearest fill, not an exchange execution.
1. Soybean oil over meal: a sound thesis can still become a poor hold
The package entered at +3 oil at 68.28¢ and −3 meal at $368.00. At the current references:
gross P&L = 3 × 60 × (68.51 − 68.28) − 3 × 10 × (356.90 − 368.00) = +$374.40.
Both legs helped overnight: oil rose 0.48¢ from the prior settlement proxy while meal fell $2.70. The ratio advanced from 0.189182 to 0.191959. Reported session ranges imply a conservative cross-extreme ratio envelope of 0.188737–0.192638, entirely inside the former 0.169005 stop and 0.208696 target. The exit is therefore discretionary risk reduction, not a claimed trigger.
The key change is price rather than new fundamentals. No post-6:05 p.m. physical or policy release improved the odds. Earlier Monday USDA data put soybean and corn harvest progress exactly at their five-year averages, but local soybean harvest remained well behind average in Iowa and Nebraska. The latest verified Illinois cash report also showed firmer meal asks while oil asks weakened, counter-evidence to the desired spread. USDA Crop Progress, USDA AMS feedstuff report
The curve remains mixed: soybean oil is in modest carry into March, while meal retains a small October/December inverse. That warns that immediate meal scarcity has eased but not disappeared. September 22 CFTC data also showed managed money net long both meal and oil; meal liquidation remains possible, but it is not fresh proof of tonight's move. CFTC agriculture positioning
Forward payoff from current references
| January 27 scenario | Weight | Oil / meal | Gross P&L from current proxies |
| Biofuel oil demand wins / meal liquidation | 35% | 72¢ / $345 | +$985.20 |
| Partial normalization | 40% | 68¢ / $360 | −$184.80 |
| Meal squeeze / oil weakness | 25% | 64.56¢ / $382 | −$1,464.00 |
The weighted result is approximately −$95.10 gross before future costs. Holding meal fixed at $356.90 for a simplified threshold illustration gives about +$1,045 to the old target versus −$1,505 to the old stop after a $30 exit reserve. That requires roughly 59% target-first odds merely to break even in a two-outcome view. Ratio stops do not define a unique dollar loss because both legs move, so those figures are sensitivity, not a guaranteed cap.
Decision: Exit the full package; no reversal. The structural idea may reappear after September 30 Grain Stocks, but current upside no longer compensates for meal-squeeze and event-gap risk.
2. Euro short: policy support survives, but the trade is crowded
Exact delayed M6EZ26 was 1.1399 at 11:54 p.m. Toronto, eight pips below the prior mark. The displayed session range was 1.1398–1.1411, so neither the stop nor target was observed. Exact Micro Euro quote
The post-cutoff macro signal is consistent: the U.S. 10-year yield exceeded 5.27%, the two-year approached 5%, and markets priced three further Fed hikes by mid-2027. That supports the dollar versus Europe, where higher energy costs and the ECB's more measured stance constrain growth. It also means much of the tightening narrative is no longer a variant view. Reuters global markets, ECB speech
December-to-March euro futures carried an approximately 46-pip upward slope in the latest available, slightly asynchronous observations. That is consistent with rate differentials being embedded in futures pricing; it is not an extra return to add to the scenario P&L. September 22 CFTC data show meaningful speculative euro shorts, creating squeeze risk around PCE and quarter-end. CFTC financial futures
Euro payoff from 1.1399
| Scenario through November 30 | Weight | M6E level | Gross P&L from current mark |
| Inflation persistence / ECB restraint | 30% | 1.1150 | +$2,490 |
| Partial policy divergence | 40% | 1.1300 | +$990 |
| Softer U.S. inflation / squeeze | 30% | 1.1550 | −$1,510 |
The probability-weighted result is approximately +$690 gross before future costs, and target-to-stop payoff is about 1.65×. Using a $40 future-exit reserve lowers the expected value to about +$650. These weights are analyst judgments, not market-implied probabilities.
Decision: Hold −8 M6EZ26; no add. Preserve the 1.1550 stop, 1.1150 target and November 30 mandatory exit. A material PCE undershoot, more aggressive ECB guidance or credible energy de-escalation would weaken the position.
3. Cross-asset challenger scan
| Market | Latest useful reference | Assessment | Decision |
| November WTI | $93.94/bbl at 11:26 p.m. Toronto | War risk remains bullish, but recovering Gulf flows and binary U.S. diesel policy make the second-session rise expensive to chase | Wait |
| December Micro Gold | $4,163.00/oz exact | Higher real-rate expectations are bearish, but a new short duplicates the euro position after a very large selloff | Wait / Avoid chase |
| December Micro S&P | 7,726.25 exact | Higher yields pressure valuation, but large leveraged-fund shorts and PCE create squeeze risk | Wait |
| December / March / June SOFR | 95.610 / 95.300 / 95.120 exact | Curve implies roughly 4.39% / 4.70% / 4.88%; substantial tightening is already priced | Wait |
| Corn and wheat | Reopened markets, no stronger edge | Harvest, tariff and stocks risks conflict; wheat positioning is already short | Wait |
Reuters marked November Brent at $106.77 alongside WTI, a $12.83/bbl matched-front spread. November Brent expires September 30, so it must not be confused with the much lower December contract or read as an overnight price collapse. EIA's latest official data showed crude inventories 2% above their five-year average, while gasoline and distillates remained 6% and 12% below average: a products-tight, crude-less-tight configuration. Reuters oil update, ICE Brent expiry, EIA petroleum summary
Micro sizing is feasible in several challengers, but feasibility is not edge. Four Micro WTI contracts with a hypothetical $93.60 entry and $91 stop would plan roughly $1,040 risk, yet $93.60 is a future condition rather than an observed fill. One Micro Gold short with a defensible wide stop also fits the starter band, but its judgmental payoff is inferior and highly correlated with the existing euro short. No new order is authorized.

Bottom line
Favorable price action is not automatically a reason to keep risk. The oil/meal basket delivered a simulated gain, but its next-dollar payoff turned negative and the current paper position could not be reduced by one pair. The full package is therefore closed. The euro short remains the book's cleanest expression, but the consensus has moved toward it; keep the existing size rather than add.
All performance and executions are simulated. Assumed fills are not exchange executions; exact contracts and proxies are distinguished, source observation times are preserved, and no real order was placed.
