The euro short still leads; the oil/meal basket improves but its forward edge shrinks
Hold the eight-contract Micro Euro short and the three-pair soybean-oil/meal package without additions. Exact closing references mark combined gross open P&L near +$347. The euro short remains the cleaner payoff. The agricultural basket improved as meal fell, but average harvest progress and sub-1x forward payoff make an addition unattractive. Avoid chasing the oil spike, rates, equities or gold.

Research cutoff: September 28, 2026, 6:05 p.m. Toronto
Review: North American close; changes since 12:05 p.m. Toronto
Economic decision: Hold −8 December Micro Euro futures and the +3 March Micro Soybean Oil / −3 March Micro Soybean Meal package. No add, trim, exit or new entry.
The book finished the session with two positive positions, but only one still offers attractive forward asymmetry. Exact December Micro Euro was 1.1407 at 4:59 p.m. Toronto, leaving the short +$150 gross. March soybean-oil and meal settlement proxies were 68.03¢/lb and $359.60/short ton, leaving the package +$207 gross.
Paper NAV is $999,894.75, cash is $999,537.75, gross open P&L is +$357, and cumulative net P&L is −$105.25. Open risk remains approximately 0.31% of NAV. No real orders were placed and there are no new assumed fills; this run only records refreshed paper marks and retain decisions.
Portfolio decisions
| Paper exposure | Latest usable reference | Gross open P&L | Decision |
−8 December Micro Euro M6EZ26 | 1.1407 exact delayed | +$150 | Hold; no add |
| +3 March Micro Soybean Oil / −3 March Micro Soybean Meal | 68.03¢ / $359.60 settlement proxies | +$207 | Hold; no add |
The euro quote is the exact micro contract. The oil and meal marks are same-month standard-contract settlements in identical quoted units. CME states that daily and final settlement prices for its micro agricultural contracts equal the standard contracts, even when the settlement is not a tradable micro tick. They are still proxies, not claimed micro executions. CME Micro Agriculture FAQ
1. Euro: supported by inflation persistence, but much is priced
Exact delayed M6EZ26 was 1.1407 at 4:59 p.m. Toronto, versus the 1.1422 assumed entry. The session range was 1.1390–1.1428; neither the 1.1550 stop nor the 1.1150 target was touched through that observation. Exact M6EZ26 quote
The strongest post-noon macro development came from Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. She estimated August headline and core inflation at 3.8% and 3.4%, argued that energy, supply disruption and AI-related investment are broadening price pressure, and said labor can withstand higher rates. She also kept future adjustments data-dependent. That combination supports the dollar and the existing euro short, but it is not a license to add after the market moved to roughly a 70% probability of another October Fed hike. Federal Reserve, Reuters market close
The cross-asset close confirms the repricing: the two-year Treasury yield reached about 4.94%, the 10-year about 5.25%, the S&P 500 fell 0.8%, and spot gold lost about 3.6%. The euro short therefore benefits from a real rate advantage, but the surprise is no longer hidden.
Euro payoff
For eight micro contracts, every pip is $10.
| Scenario through November 30 | Weight | M6E level | Gross P&L from 1.1407 |
| Persistent energy shock / U.S. resilience | 30% | 1.1150 | +$2,570 |
| Mixed data / limited divergence | 45% | 1.1350 | +$570 |
| Energy normalization / dollar reversal | 25% | 1.1550 | −$1,430 |
The probability-weighted result is approximately +$595 gross before future costs. Remaining reward to target is about 1.80 times mark-to-stop loss. Shifting ten probability points from the favorable to the adverse case cuts expected value by $400 but leaves it positive.
Decision: Hold −8 M6EZ26; no add. Keep the 1.1550 stop, 1.1150 target and November 30 exit. A softer PCE report, credible energy de-escalation or a crowded-dollar reversal would weaken the thesis.
2. Soybean oil over meal: better mark, thinner forward payoff
The package is long three March 2027 Micro Soybean Oil contracts at 68.28¢ and short three March 2027 Micro Soybean Meal contracts at $368.00. September 28 settlement-marked standard proxies were 68.03¢ and $359.60.
gross P&L = 3 × 60 × (68.03 − 68.28) − 3 × 10 × (359.60 − 368.00) = +$207.
The package added $63.60 since noon because meal weakened more than oil. Its ratio is 0.189182, safely between the 0.169005 stop and 0.208696 target. A conservative envelope using the full session highs and lows also remained inside both thresholds; that is a breach check, not a claim that asynchronous extremes traded together.
Fresh USDA Crop Progress data show why this remains a Hold rather than an Add. Soybean harvest was 17% complete and corn 18%, both exactly equal to their five-year averages. Crop ratings were unchanged. Normal national progress supports continued crush supply, but it is not a new production shock. USDA Crop Progress
The structure is also less bullish than the P&L suggests. March soybean oil remains in modest carry, while meal is nearly flat through May. Managed money reduced soybean-oil length and increased meal length in the September 22 snapshot. That leaves meal vulnerable to liquidation, but it also shows that the oil leg lacks strengthening fund support. CFTC agriculture positioning
Basket payoff
| January 27 scenario | Weight | Oil / meal | Gross P&L from close |
| Trade bull | 35% | 72¢ / $345 | +$1,152.60 |
| Base | 40% | 68¢ / $360 | −$17.40 |
| Trade bear / stress coordinates | 25% | 64.56¢ / $382 | −$1,296.60 |
The weighted result is only about +$72 gross before future costs. Target payoff is roughly 0.89 times modeled downside from current marks. The existing three pairs remain within starter risk, but arithmetic capacity is not an investment edge.
Decision: Hold +3 MZLH27 / −3 MZMH27; no add. Keep the ratio stop and January 27 exit. September 30 Grain Stocks is the next sizing checkpoint. The stop ratio does not define a unique dollar loss because both legs can move; the bear coordinates are a disclosed stress case, not a guaranteed fill.
3. Challenger scan: the price moves were larger than the remaining edge
Energy
November WTI settled at $92.60/bbl, only $0.19 higher after rising roughly 4.5% intraday. November Brent settled at $105.28 and December at $97.83, leaving an exceptional $7.45 backwardation. The physical shortage is real, but the close shows how much fear is already embedded. Partial Saudi flow recovery and possible U.S. diesel-policy changes add two-sided risk. Oil close
One Micro WTI contract can fit the starter budget with a meaningful stop. The economic edge does not: buying after a failed spike pays rich prompt carry, while shorting fights physical tightness. Wait. For natural gas, use November MNGX26; the October micro already terminated. Restored Appalachian supply and mild weather oppose a new long.
Equities, rates and gold
Higher yields and Cook's inflation assessment pressure duration, equities and gold. Yet the market already repriced sharply. A 100-point Micro S&P stop risks $500 per contract, so two to four contracts could fit starter risk. A $120 Micro Gold stop risks $1,200. Both are mechanically feasible and economically late. Wait rather than chase.
Corn and wheat
December corn settled at 523¢ and December wheat at 688.75¢. Carry and weak wheat inspections favor shorts, but corn speculative length is large, wheat positioning is already short, and Wednesday's USDA reports can gap both markets. Illustrative scenario trees produce approximately zero or negative value before costs. Wait.

Bottom line
Hold both open positions without adding. The euro short remains the cleaner trade because the policy mechanism is intact and forward reward still exceeds downside. The soybean-oil/meal package improved, but most of its attractive move has already occurred: normal harvest progress and sub-1× forward payoff make the next dollar of risk unattractive.
No challenger offers a stronger combination of fresh surprise, whole-contract fit and asymmetric payoff. The correct action is to preserve the two existing exposures and let JOLTS, PCE and USDA stocks data provide the next decision-grade information.
