Copper broke 6.60; exit the simulated long rather than widen the stop
Exact December Micro Copper traded below the unchanged 6.60 stop in the 03:40 Toronto bar. Exit all three simulated contracts at an assumed 6.6340 reference nearest the decision. Hold the euro short and soybean-oil/meal package without additions, and avoid chasing oil or gold after large overnight repricing.
Copper broke the stop: exit the simulated long, do not widen it
Research cutoff: September 28, 2026, 6:10 a.m. Toronto
Review: Asia/Europe monitor; changes since 12:10 a.m. Toronto
Economic decision: Exit all three December Micro Copper contracts; hold the euro short and soybean-oil/meal pair; make no additions or new entries.
The strongest signal is the one the risk plan was built to act on. Exact December Micro Copper MHGZ26 first traded below the unchanged 6.60 stop in the 3:40–3:45 a.m. Toronto five-minute bar, reaching 6.5965. A later bar reached 6.5950. The latest completed exact bar at the research cutoff closed at 6.6340.
The simulated portfolio therefore exits all three contracts now. Under the authorized assumed-nearest convention, the paper fill is dated at the decision time and uses the latest exact 6.6340 reference, with one adverse tick applied by the accounting engine. It is not represented as a historical exchange fill at 6.60. IBKR market-data methodology
This is not a reversal call. Copper still has supportive long-run supply evidence, and Escondida labor negotiations remain a catalyst. But the tactical trade was explicitly invalidated at 6.60; slower Chinese profit growth, COMEX contango and crowded speculative length make widening the stop the wrong response.
Portfolio and implementation
| Paper exposure | Latest reference | Gross open P&L | Decision |
+3 December Micro Copper MHGZ26 | 6.6340 exact | Closed | Exit all; no reversal |
−8 December Micro Euro M6EZ26 | 1.1414 exact delayed | +$80.00 | Hold; no add |
| +3 March Micro Soybean Oil / −3 March Micro Soybean Meal | 68.22¢ / $361.60 synchronized standard proxies | +$181.20 | Hold; no add |
The assumed copper exit price is 6.6335 after the modeled adverse tick. Gross simulated copper P&L is −$1,188.75; entry and exit commissions total $21, producing −$1,209.75 net. No real order was placed.
After the exit, paper NAV is $999,798.95, cash is $999,537.75, gross open P&L is +$261.20, and cumulative net P&L is −$201.05. Two positions remain, with $23,000 of conservative modeled margin reserve and about 0.31% ledger open risk.
1. Copper: the market rejected the disruption headline
What changed
The exact micro contract—not a standard-contract proxy—crossed the stop. The 3:40 a.m. Toronto bar opened at 6.6100, reached 6.6130, fell to 6.5965 and closed at 6.6000. That path matters because the previous report could only say the position was close to invalidation; this report can verify the invalidation itself.
China's January–August industrial-profit growth slowed to 15.7% from 17.6% through July. The level is still positive, but the deceleration weakens demand confirmation. China industrial profits
The supply side remains constructive but not decisive. Escondida supervisors were voting on a contract offer, yet a rejection begins mediation rather than instantly removing output. Standard copper curves were still in contango, and September 22 CFTC data showed non-commercial net length of roughly 90,500 contracts, up more than 15,000 in a week. Scarcity is not an undiscovered view; crowded ownership creates liquidation risk. CFTC copper positioning
Decision and sensitivity
Exit +3 MHGZ26; no reversal. The stopped position has no valid hold expected value. For context, a fresh unconstrained 20%/35%/45% sensitivity from 6.6340 at 6.95/6.65/6.35 is negative by roughly $443 gross across three micros. That is not a calibrated forecast, but it shows why an immediate re-entry is unjustified.
The next useful evidence is China PMI on September 29 and a fresh physical-market read. A future long requires a new thesis; the old trade is finished.
2. Euro: hold the short, but respect crowding
Exact delayed M6EZ26 was 1.1414 at 5:52 a.m. Toronto, eight pips below the 1.1422 assumed entry. The contract ranged from 1.1409 to 1.1428. March at 1.1458 versus December at 1.1414 implies an indicative 44-pip upward curve, but the observations are asynchronous and the carry is not a separate guaranteed profit. Exact M6EZ26 quote
The relative-rate mechanism remains valid: the Fed raised its target range to 3.75%–4.00% while the ECB deposit rate is 2.50%. The market already prices substantial additional Fed tightening, so this is a continuation thesis rather than a surprise. Federal Reserve, ECB
CFTC September 22 data show 220,708 non-commercial euro longs and 273,042 shorts, or 52,334 net short. That supports momentum but increases squeeze risk. CFTC euro positioning
A subjective 35%/40%/25% tree at 1.1150/1.1350/1.1550 produces about +$840 gross from the existing entry before future costs. Hold −8 M6EZ26; no add. Keep the 1.1550 stop, 1.1150 target and November 30 exit.
3. Soybean oil over meal: price confirmation, not physical confirmation
Synchronized 6:00 a.m. Toronto standard-contract proxies marked March soybean oil at 68.22¢/lb and meal at $361.60/short ton. They are compatible same-expiry proxies in identical quoted units, not observed micro executions.
For the portfolio basket,
V = 60 × oil − 10 × meal = 477.20 per pair,
versus 416.80 at entry. Across three pairs, gross open P&L is +$181.20. The improvement came mainly from meal weakness.
China's newly reported tariff-cut list includes soybean oil and meal but excludes soybeans. The effective date was not specified, and the announcement is not yet shipment evidence. It could support both legs, so it is not unambiguously bullish oil versus meal. Reuters tariff report
September 22 CFTC data show managed-money oil net length of 92,137 and meal net length of 191,087. Heavier meal ownership offers liquidation potential, but the latest weekly changes moved against the relative thesis. CFTC agriculture positioning
A subjective 30%/45%/25% January tree at oil/meal 72/345, 69.5/358 and 64.56/382 yields about +$195 gross expected value from the current proxy basket. Costs, gaps and uncertain probabilities reduce conviction. Hold three pairs; no add. Keep the basket stop at 53.60 and January 27 exit.
4. Challenger scan: large moves are not automatically entries
| Market | Current evidence | Decision |
| WTI crude | November around $95.69 and December $91.63; extreme backwardation prices prompt scarcity while LNG and crude flows show partial normalization | Avoid chasing |
| Micro Gold | Exact December micro at 4,188.0 after a roughly 3% fall; a defensible stop back at 4,320 risks about $1,320 per micro | Avoid chasing the short |
| U.S. equity indices | ES and NQ lower, but the same oil/rates shock is already visible and earnings resilience offsets the rate drag | Wait |
| Yen | Coordinated intervention warnings create asymmetric squeeze risk | Avoid short yen |
| December corn | Feasible micro/standard risk arithmetic, but September 30 stocks gap risk and incomplete fresh crop evidence dominate | Watch, no entry |
WTI and Brent rose more than 2% after the U.S. rejected Iran's proposal. At the same time, Qatar-linked LNG traffic through Hormuz increased and September Middle East crude exports recovered. The November–December WTI backwardation of roughly $4/bbl already embeds immediate scarcity. Reuters oil update, Reuters LNG flows
Gold is the other tempting but rejected trade. Exact delayed MGCZ26 was 4,188.0 after a 3% decline, while the 30-year Treasury yield rose. The move validates the higher-yield mechanism but makes a new short late and difficult to size with a meaningful stop. Exact MGCZ26 quote, Reuters gold

Bottom line
Copper's exact stop breach is more important than a supportive mine headline. The disciplined decision is to close the simulated long at the nearest current exact reference, accept the loss and require a fresh thesis before re-entry. The euro short remains the cleanest open directional position; the oil/meal pair is improving but not yet supported by new physical evidence. Neither merits an addition.
All executions and results are simulated. Assumed fills are not exchange executions; proxies are labeled, and no real order was placed.
