A reported Hormuz flow surge lowers the oil tail, but one night is not a reopening
President Trump said U.S.-Iran talks would likely resume this week, while U.S. officials claimed about 22 million barrels crossed Hormuz on Friday night. The combination reduces the immediate oil-disruption tail, but commercial tracking still shows opaque and uneven flows rather than a durable reopening. November Micro WTI remains a Wait because Friday's prompt curve priced scarcity and the Sunday gap is unknown. Hold copper and euro unchanged; do not add to the crowded euro short before reopened price discovery.
One big Hormuz transit is not a reopening
Research cutoff: September 27, 2026, 12:05 p.m. Toronto
Decision: Hold three December Micro Copper longs and eight December Micro Euro shorts at unchanged size, stops and targets. Remain flat oil, wheat and every challenger. No new paper order, assumed fill or portfolio mark.
The material change since the 6:05 a.m. review is a more constructive—but still conditional—oil signal. President Trump told Axios that U.S.-Iran negotiations would likely resume this week. The same report attributed a roughly 22 million-barrel Friday-night Hormuz transit to a U.S. defense official. Axios, September 27, Times of Israel summary
That lowers the immediate disruption tail, but does not prove a durable reopening. Preliminary Kpler tracking showed 33.7 million barrels for the week through Friday; the one-night official claim and the commercial weekly tally use different windows and visibility, including hard-to-observe “dark” crossings. They should not be spliced into a clean time series. Kpler report via Business Recorder, September 27
This distinction is the strongest finding: a large transit can be real without being repeatable. Talks are prospective, no final agreement was reported, and core CME futures remained closed at the cutoff. The headline changes probabilities; it does not create an executable Sunday-noon price.
Decisions and simulated portfolio
| Position or watch | Latest defensible reference | Economic decision | Simulated status |
Long 3 MHGZ26 Micro Copper | $6.7665/lb exact last, September 25 at 4:59 p.m. Toronto | Hold; no add | Entry $6.792; stop $6.60; target $7.20; exit by November 13 |
Short 8 M6EZ26 Micro Euro | 1.1429 USD/EUR exact delayed last, September 25 at 4:59 p.m. Toronto | Hold; no add | Entry 1.1422; stop 1.1550; target 1.1150; exit by November 30 |
| November Micro WTI | $92.46/bbl exact frozen Friday last | Wait / avoid at the carried price | No position or order; revised scenario value is slightly negative |
| December wheat | 703.25¢/bushel September 25 reference | Remain flat | Prior simulated exit remains final; no automatic re-entry |
The ledger remains valued on Friday's exact portfolio marks. Cash is $1,000,758, simulated NAV $1,000,496.75, gross open P&L −$261.25 and cumulative net P&L +$496.75.
Raw remaining mark-to-stop risk is $2,458.75. The 1.25 planning buffer gives $3,073.44, or 0.307% of NAV. The ledger's more conservative policy field remains $3,490.75 because it retains entry sizing and modeled costs. Neither is a maximum loss: a reopening gap can cross a simulated threshold.
No Enter, Add, Trim, Exit or Reverse decision was justified, so no assumed paper fill was recorded.
What changed since 6:05 a.m.
1. Diplomacy moved forward at the margin. Trump expects another negotiating round this week, possibly Monday, while still considering military options. That is not an accepted deal.
2. A large Friday-night oil transit was reported. The 22 million-barrel figure is an attributed U.S. official claim, not an independently reconciled commercial-flow series.
3. The oil long lost its small modeled edge. Shifting five probability points from the escalation branch to the relief branch changes the one-micro expected value from +$54.50 to −$15.50 at the carried $92.46 reference.
4. Copper and euro prices did not update. Their Friday observations remain the only defensible marks; no stop or target is assumed to have traded in a closed market.
5. No new copper, rates or agriculture release changed the open book. Weekend articles largely recapped Friday evidence.
Micro WTI: better flows make an expensive long less attractive
The exact frozen Friday Micro WTI references remain:
| Contract | Price | Prompt relationship |
November MCLX26 | $92.46 | — |
December MCLZ26 | $88.84 | November premium $3.62 |
January MCLF27 | $86.06 | November premium $6.40 |
These are asynchronous Friday lasts, not executable calendar-spread quotes. Even so, the shape is economically clear: the front contract already charges a large scarcity premium. If more barrels repeatedly clear Hormuz and diplomacy progresses, that premium can compress even when the conflict remains unresolved.
The revised one-to-three-session tree is:
| Outcome | Weight | Price | Net P&L per micro from $92.46 after $12 friction |
| Escalation and persistent prompt scarcity | 25% | $100.00 | +$742 |
| Stalemate and uneven flows | 45% | $92.50 | −$8 |
| Talks advance or transit recovery persists | 30% | $86.00 | −$658 |
The expected terminal price is $92.425. After the modeled $0.12/bbl round-trip friction, expected P&L is −$15.50 per 100-barrel micro. The cost-adjusted break-even reference is about $92.31. A $1 higher opening would reduce a long's modeled value by another $100.
Those weights are analyst judgments, not measured probabilities. The five-point transfer is justified by fresh diplomacy and the attributed transit surge, while keeping the central outcome unchanged. It is intentionally modest because the flow measures conflict and no agreement exists.
One contract remains mechanically small enough: an illustrative $88.50 stop implies $396 raw risk from the carried reference, or about $507 after the 1.25 buffer and $12 friction. Capacity is not an edge. A short is also unattractive because its loss is poorly bounded if attacks or outages resume.
Decision: remain flat. Do not buy the scarcity premium and do not short an opaque geopolitical tail. Re-underwrite exact November price, front spreads and independently corroborated flows after the 6:00 p.m. Toronto reopening. CME Micro WTI specifications
Copper: hold regional tightness, do not add to crowding
Three Micro Copper contracts represent 7,500 lb. At the carried exact Friday mark of $6.7665/lb, open P&L is −$191.25. Remaining loss to the $6.60 threshold is $1,248.75; upside to $7.20 is $3,251.25, a 2.60× raw remaining reward/risk ratio.
No fresh Sunday copper fact justifies changing the prior underwriting:
• China/London prompt tightness and depleted visible stocks support the long, but U.S. inventories and deferred contango show that scarcity is not uniform.
• BHP confirmed the September 23 fatality at Escondida, while later reporting said a gradual restart was under way. The supervisors' offer vote remains a catalyst; rejecting an offer would start another process, not instantly remove production. BHP statement
• September 22 CFTC data show managed money long 96,421 and short 13,899 copper contracts: net long 82,522, up 17,416 in a week. The direction supports the thesis, but crowded liquidation risk rose. CFTC metals positioning
• SHFE trades September 28–30 before the National Day closure. Around the holiday, copper price limits rise to ±9%, hedging margin to 10% and general-position margin to 11%. That is liquidity risk management, not demand evidence. SHFE notice
The November 13 tree remains 26% at 7.20, 41% at 6.85 and 33% at 6.60. It implies +$690 forward from Friday's mark and +$498.75 from entry before incremental exit costs. Moving ten probability points from the upside to stopped downside would cut expected value by $450. The tree is path-blind and cannot capture a stop first followed by recovery.
Decision: hold three; no add, no stop widening and no automatic roll. Exit at the nearest sourced price if the first practicable observation is at or below 6.60. The four-month copper theme may outlive the November 13 position, but any deferred contract requires new pricing and a separate decision. CME Micro Copper specifications
Euro: relief is squeeze risk, not yet thesis failure
Eight Micro Euro contracts equal €100,000. At the carried exact delayed mark of 1.1429 USD/EUR, open P&L is −$70. Remaining loss to 1.1550 is $1,210 and potential gain to 1.1150 is $2,790, a 2.31× raw ratio.
The relative-rate mechanism survives. The Fed's September range is 3.75%–4.00%, against the ECB's 2.50% deposit rate. That gap supports the dollar, but futures basis already incorporates much of the carry and it cannot be counted twice. Federal Reserve, ECB
The fresh oil news is two-sided for this trade. More durable Hormuz transit would ease Europe's imported-energy stress and can lift the euro. At the same time, the ECB is also tightening and the market has already priced additional Fed firmness. CFTC legacy data show euro non-commercial positioning at a 52,334-contract net short, so a diplomatic surprise can trigger a crowded squeeze. CFTC currency positioning
The November 30 tree remains 29% at 1.1150, 35% at 1.1350 and 36% at 1.1550. Expected gross value is +$650 forward from Friday's mark and +$580 from entry. The probabilities are judgments and the endpoint model does not describe the path.
Decision: hold eight; no add. Cover at the nearest sourced price if the first practicable Sunday observation is at or above 1.1550. Do not map spot-chart levels directly into the December futures position without checking basis. Retain the November 30 time exit. CME Micro FX specifications
Portfolio interaction and challenger scan
Combined raw target upside is $6,041.25 versus $2,458.75 raw remaining stop risk, a path-blind 2.46× ratio. Copper long and euro short can partially offset broad dollar moves, but they are not a documented hedge. A China-demand disappointment can hurt copper while a détente-driven euro rally hurts the short simultaneously.
No challenger displaced the two holdings:
• Treasuries: a short duplicates the euro position's higher-for-longer factor and is vulnerable to safe-haven buying; no new rate price exists while Globex is closed.
• Equity indices: Saudi equities rose while other Gulf markets were mixed on Sunday, showing no broad regional risk-off confirmation. December Micro S&P remains a closed Friday reference, not a Sunday signal. Reuters, September 27
• Gold: haven demand competes with high yields, contango and large speculative length. Wait for reopened cross-asset confirmation.
• Agriculture: Friday references were December corn 528.75¢, wheat 704¢ and November soybeans $13.20. September 30 grain stocks and reopening price discovery are economically important; no current entry is promoted.
• Zinc: the prompt spread is tight, but Nyrstar said Budel continues normal operations during its strategic review. A review is not a shutdown. Nyrstar

The practical conclusion is sharper than “wait for the market.” The new diplomacy and transit claim make a long November WTI unattractive at Friday's already expensive prompt price, but conflicting flow measurements and the unresolved military tail also make a short asymmetric in the wrong direction. Hold the two small, still-positive positions; add nothing before exact Sunday price discovery.
