The euro short advances; copper becomes the book’s fragile leg
Hold all three paper positions without adding. Exact December Micro Euro fell to 1.1407 as U.S. yields and hike pricing rose, but much of that policy path is already priced. Copper’s same-month proxy retreated to 6.7425 while Chinese demand confirmation is holiday-thinned, making the long the most fragile position. Wheat uses the September 24 official settlement because no newer exact-contract observation was verified.
The euro short advances; copper becomes the book’s fragile leg
Research cutoff: September 25, 2026, 12:05 a.m. Toronto. This six-hour review covers the three open simulated futures positions and liquid challengers. Quotes are delayed. M6EZ26 is an exact-contract observation; ZWZ26 uses the official September 24 settlement because no newer exact observation was verified; MHGZ26 uses the explicitly labeled same-month HGZ26 standard-contract proxy.
Decision summary
Hold +3 MHGZ26, −8 M6EZ26 and −1 ZWZ26. Do not add, trim, exit or open a fourth position. The euro short progressed overnight, but the market now prices a 71% probability of another near-term Fed increase and more than 90 basis points of further tightening. Copper fell while China’s domestic price discovery is holiday-thinned, making it the book’s most fragile leg. Wheat still offers the clearest agricultural carry-and-exports mechanism, but the mark is a dated settlement and Black Sea event risk prevents an add.
The latest suitable marks imply approximate gross open P&L of −$158.75: copper −$371.25, euro +$150 and wheat +$62.50. With cash of $999,874, indicative NAV is $999,715.25 and cumulative net P&L is −$284.75. These are simulated results; the accounting engine records the marks separately.
1. Short eight December Micro Euro: hold, no add
Exact M6EZ26 was 1.1407 at 11:46 p.m. Toronto, with an overnight range of 1.1405–1.1420, volume 1,079 and open interest 16,828. The September 24 settlement was 1.1412. March 2027 was 1.1451 three minutes later, while matched settlements also put March 44 pips over December. WSJ exact contract
The macro mechanism strengthened. Spot EUR reached 1.1370, a two-month low, while the dollar index traded near 101.2. In early Asia, the U.S. two-year yield was 4.9035%, ten-year 5.1915% and thirty-year 5.4805%. Futures-implied odds of another Fed increase were 71%, up from 53% earlier in the week. Reuters FX, September 25, Reuters Asia, September 25
That is supportive evidence, but also a priced-in warning. More than 90 basis points of additional tightening were already reflected in rates, and Asian trading was thinned by closures in mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea. A weak durable-goods result, softer Michigan inflation expectations, credible Iran de-escalation or renewed concern about U.S. fiscal credibility could reverse the dollar quickly.
Latest CFTC positioning remains dated September 15. Leveraged funds were net short 28,156 standard euro futures, but the weekly change was +5,129, meaning net shorts had contracted rather than expanded. Asset managers remained net long 251,698. Positioning therefore does not validate a fresh wave of bearish inflows. CFTC financial futures
| November 30 path | Weight | M6EZ26 | Gross P&L from 1.1422 entry |
| Dollar extension | 30% | 1.1150 target | +$2,720 |
| Policy gap persists | 45% | 1.1300 | +$1,220 |
| Softer U.S. data / de-escalation | 25% | 1.1550 stop | −$1,280 |
The judgmental expected gross P&L remains +$1,045 from entry and is +$895 from the current mark. From 1.1407, target upside is $2,570 and stop downside is $1,430, a 1.80× ratio versus 2.13× at entry. Hold the cleanest macro leg, but do not chase it near an overnight low. The 44-pip March premium is financing/carry context, not a forecast or guaranteed gain.
2. Long three December Micro Copper: hold, no add
HGZ26, the same-month standard-contract proxy, was $6.7425/lb at 11:30 p.m. Toronto, down 0.70% from the $6.7900 settlement. Its overnight range was $6.7340–$6.7805. This is not an observed MHGZ26 quote. Standard and micro copper share the same USD/lb quotation and December expiry; three micros represent 7,500 lb. WSJ HGZ26, CME Micro Copper specifications
At the proxy mark, gross open P&L is −$371.25. Additional mark-to-stop downside is $1,068.75 and mark-to-target upside is $3,431.25. The 3.21× arithmetic is attractive, but it is not a probability estimate.
The physical signal remains split. SMM’s September 24 review put Chinese regional social stocks at 72,600 tonnes, down 16,500 tonnes week over week, while COMEX and LME stocks edged higher and roughly 100,000 tonnes were expected to arrive in the U.S. during October. Chinese import losses exceeded CNY1,500/t. SMM attributes domestic draws chiefly to restricted arrivals, while buyers reverted to just-in-time purchasing above CNY110,000/t. A separate copper-tube survey found weak orders and only mild prospective October stabilization. Both reports predate the prior cutoff and are retained as context, not relabeled as overnight news. BHP confirmed a fatal September 23 incident at Escondida but did not quantify production losses or give a restart timetable. It would be incorrect to convert the statement into an assumed supply outage. BHP statement, September 24
The latest available December–March proxy snapshot showed 10.35¢/lb contango, roughly 1.53% across three months. Latest CFTC data, dated September 15, show managed money net long 65,106 contracts after a 17,048 weekly reduction. Long exposure remains meaningful despite liquidation. CFTC metals positioning
| November 13 path | Weight | Proxy level | Gross P&L from 6.792 entry |
| Scarcity persists, yields stabilize | 25% | 7.20 target | +$3,060 |
| Tight availability offsets weak orders | 40% | 6.85 | +$435 |
| Premium unwinds / macro liquidation | 35% | 6.60 stop | −$1,440 |
Expected gross terminal P&L is +$435 from entry and +$806.25 from the proxy mark. Shifting ten probability points from the bull outcome to the bear outcome cuts forward EV by $450. Hold the small starter, but do not average. A verified demand/inventory reversal or sustained deterioration toward 6.60 forces reassessment; the stop must not be widened.
3. Short one December Chicago wheat: hold, no add
The latest verified exact-contract reference is the 707.00¢/bu official September 24 settlement in USDA AMS’s Illinois Grain Bids final report. March settled 721.50¢, May 728.25¢ and July 729.00¢. December–March carry is therefore 14.50¢, or 2.05% of December. Chicago cash SRW averaged 692¢ and basis remained −25 to −5Z. These are dated settlements and cash bids—not midnight executable prices. USDA AMS final report
The settlement implies +$62.50 gross open P&L. From 707.00¢, the standing target offers $2,925 and the stop risks $1,575, a 1.86× ratio. No newer exact quote or complete overnight stop-path chronology was verified.
The underlying thesis remains weak U.S. export demand plus carry. Weekly sales were 267,553 tonnes, 23.6% below the bottom of the reported 350,000–600,000-tonne range. Cumulative commitments were 9.3684 million tonnes versus 13.6404 million a year earlier, down 31.3%. USDA weekly export sales
Counterevidence is visible in price resilience. December held near 700 despite the sales miss. Black Sea supply is ample, but impaired logistics mean diplomatic progress is not equivalent to reopened ports or higher loadings. Russia’s use of Baltic and Arctic terminals shows adaptation, not normalization. Reuters Black Sea routing, September 21
September 15 CFTC data show managed money only modestly net short Chicago wheat by 3,674 contracts; the weekly change was −8,547. This is not an extreme squeeze setup, but it also does not supply a fresh bearish positioning catalyst. CFTC agriculture
| November 23 path | Weight | ZWZ26 | Gross P&L from 708.25 entry |
| Shipping/weather squeeze | 30% | 738.50 stop | −$1,512.50 |
| Weak demand offsets trapped supply | 40% | 685.00 | +$1,162.50 |
| Export routes normalize | 30% | 648.50 target | +$2,987.50 |
Expected gross terminal P&L is +$907.50 from entry and +$845 from the settlement mark. Hold, but add only after actual export/logistics improvement and sustained sub-700 price confirmation—not because one sales report was weak.
Challenger scan
• Rates: December ten-year futures traded at 104.750 overnight. A new short would duplicate the euro trade’s dominant U.S.-rates factor after a substantial repricing and is vulnerable to weak-data or de-escalation reversal. WSJ TYZ26
• Equity indices: ESZ26 traded near 7,765 and NQZ26 near 30,802. Higher yields are adverse, but Nasdaq strength and the absence of a clean breakdown leave no superior short. WSJ ESZ26, WSJ NQZ26
• Energy: Reuters cited WTI at $93.80 and Brent at $105.85 in the early global session, but did not identify delivery months. They are macro context, not actionable exact-contract marks. Phased Hormuz-reopening talks and attack risk keep the trade binary. Reuters energy context
• Gold and silver: modest overnight rebounds did not overcome adverse real-yield and dollar pressure. They do not displace the euro short or justify reopening the exited gold trade.
• Corn and soybeans: harvest pressure and crowded managed-money longs favor correction, but China-purchase headlines and weather delays remain material. No fresh confirmation improves on the existing wheat expression.
