Copper pulled back—but the contract clock matters more than the headline

December Micro Copper fell 1.01% to 6.8295 after the prior rejection, improving entry value without completing the required 6.78–6.80 test and reclaim. The December contract expires November 25 and March trades about 10.45 cents higher, so a four-month long loses roughly $261 per micro to the current indicative roll. Stage only the finite tactical trigger; remain flat now.

Dated research, not live quotes. MGCZ26, MHGZ26, MHG H27, MESZ26, MNQZ26, ZTZ26 and the SOFR contracts are exact native-contract IBKR observations around midnight Toronto. ZCZ26, CLZ26, CLH27 and natural-gas legs are delayed exact-contract vendor observations with their own clocks. Multileg observations are diagnostic where asynchronous and are not executable spread quotes. No proxy was used for a paper fill. Research views and scenario estimates are separate from simulated positions and performance.

Copper pulled back—but the contract clock matters more than the headline

Research cutoff: September 23, 2026, 12:06:16 a.m. Toronto. Exact-contract futures observations are timestamped individually. IBKR observations are live native-contract snapshots; delayed vendor observations are identified as such. Asynchronous legs are diagnostic, not executable spreads. This is a simulated portfolio, not a real brokerage account or personalized investment advice.

Decision first

Remain flat. Stage one conditional paper plan for +3 MHGZ26, but do not fill it. December Micro Copper was $6.8295/lb at 12:00:15 a.m. Toronto, after falling 1.01% from the prior research mark. Its session low was $6.8125—still above the required $6.78–$6.80 test—so neither the test nor the later reclaim occurred.

The deterministic paper engine recorded the instruction as pending, with no backfilled trade:

• Entry sequence: a genuinely later MHGZ26 trade at $6.78–$6.80, followed by a later reclaim of $6.80.

• Size: three Micro Copper contracts, one package total.

• Stop: $6.60 after entry. Target: $7.20. Mandatory exit: November 13.

• Cancel before entry if price breaks $6.60, PMIs show a material demand break, regional tightness eases materially, or the sequence does not occur within 72 hours.

• No automatic roll. The December contract expires November 25.

The simulated portfolio remains flat with cash and NAV of $999,916. Realized gross P&L is −$77; commissions are $7; modeled slippage is $2 and is embedded in fills; realized net P&L is −$84. There are no positions, fills, open P&L, margin use or deployed risk. One conditional instruction is pending.

Why the copper plan is feasible—but not yet a trade

COMEX Micro Copper represents 2,500 pounds; its $0.0005 tick is worth $1.25. The exact MHGZ26 snapshot showed a $6.8295/$6.8305 bid/ask, $6.8125–$6.9140 session range, displayed volume of 3,703 and open interest of 8,370. CME rules, contract specifications

At a $6.80 entry, three contracts lose $1,500 at the $6.60 stop. Applying the portfolio's 1.25 risk buffer and estimated friction gives approximately $1,903.50, or 0.1904% of NAV—inside the normal 0.10%–0.25% starter range and below the 0.50% thesis cap. A conservative $6,000 paper margin reserve per contract is modeled; it is not presented as an exchange initial-margin quote. The cited AMP table showed $1,320 maintenance margin for MHG when checked at cutoff, while warning that margins can change. AMP margin table

Scenario weights are analyst judgments, not market-implied probabilities:

Conditional path from $6.80WeightTerminal priceThree-contract P&L before $28.50 friction
Bull: tight regional supply meets resilient demand30%$7.20+$3,000
Base: support holds but momentum cools40%$6.88+$600
Bear: demand disappointment reaches stop30%$6.60−$1,500
Weighted100%$6.892+$690

After $28.50 estimated friction, conditional terminal-value EV is about +$661.50. Sensitivity matters: shifting ten percentage points from the bull case to the bear case cuts EV by $1,050 and makes it negative. This is why the exact entry sequence is essential rather than optional confirmation.

The physical backdrop is supportive but not one-sided. Regional tightness, grid investment and data-centre demand support copper, while the International Copper Study Group still forecasts a 2026 refined-market surplus. CFTC data show managed money already net long, reducing the value of simply chasing strength. ICSG forecast, CFTC positioning

The expiry and carry constraint

The four-month thesis horizon extends into January, but MHGZ26 does not. CME lists the December contract's last trade on November 25, 2026. The plan therefore exits by November 13 unless separately re-underwritten. CME calendar

March MHGH27 was $6.9340 at 11:56:10 p.m. Toronto, with a $6.9310/$6.9340 bid/ask, versus the December bid of $6.8295. That nonsynchronous comparison implies roughly 10.45 cents of contango, or $261.25 per micro contract and $783.75 for three. It is an indicative roll debit, not an executable spread quote. Paying that amount would remove the current modeled edge; the staged plan therefore authorizes no roll.

Gold exit: decision quality, not imaginary profit

MGCZ26 was $4,380.70/oz at 12:00:24 a.m., with a $4,380.60/$4,380.80 bid/ask. It was $18.60 below the prior simulated exit at $4,399.30, so exiting avoided $186 of subsequent gross downside on one micro contract. That is a counterfactual diagnostic—not portfolio profit. The book realized −$84 net and remains flat.

Gold's structural ETF and official-sector demand case remains intact, but tactical re-entry is Avoid: contango, crowded speculative length, soft Asian physical demand and sensitivity to hawkish rate repricing still make the payoff fragile. February Micro Gold at $4,417.00 stood $36.30 above December, confirming positive carry cost. World Gold Council ETF data, CFTC metals positioning

MNQZ26 Micro Nasdaq31,013.75, exact, 12:01:09 a.m.Avoid chasing. Momentum is positive but concentration and PMI sensitivity offer no superior stop-defined entry.

SOFR SR3U26/Z26/H27/M2796.0025 / 95.690 / 95.445 / 95.315Avoid. The curve implies progressively higher rates across these contracts; no simpler micro expression offers better risk-adjusted value.
ZCZ26 corn532.50¢, delayed, 11:50 p.m.Avoid / demoted. The finite 525¢ gate expired. Review again only after September 24 export sales or genuinely new crop evidence.
MCLZ26 Micro WTIExact quote unavailableAvoid. Do not substitute standard CLZ26 for execution. Standard December/January observations remained backwardated, and the September 23 EIA report is the next physical reset.
NGF27−NGH27Delayed exact legs 3.850/2.847, six minutes apart; matched settlements imply $0.984Wait / no order. The asynchronous $1.003 premium is diagnostic and remains below the former $1.10 gate. Reassess after September 24 storage.

CLZ26 at $87.33 and CLH27 at $81.46 were exact standard-contract observations but not substitutes for unavailable MCLZ26. Matched vendor settlements implied approximately $6.02 backwardation. Conflicting diplomacy and supply headlines leave oil exposed to gap risk; no side offers a cleaner micro implementation before the EIA petroleum release.

What changed since the prior cutoff

• Copper fell 1.01% from $6.8990 to $6.8295, improving entry value, but the exact session low never reached the trigger. The economic idea is positive enough to stage, not positive enough to fill early.

• Gold fell from the $4,399.30 simulated exit to $4,380.70. This supports the exit rationale but does not change realized P&L.

• Equity futures stayed firm in the reopened session. MESZ26 remained above its entry zone, while technology led Asian risk trading. The dollar was firm and oil softer amid unconfirmed claims of diplomatic progress, so those headlines are treated as scenario inputs rather than facts.

• No stop, target or lifecycle event can affect the flat book. The pending copper plan has zero current risk and no protective order until a valid fill exists.

Next 72 hours

Q2 GDP's third estimate and August PCE are due September 30, outside this 72-hour window. The retained research horizon ends January 23, 2027, but the only staged expression is explicitly shorter because its contract expires first.
