Gold gives back the rebound; risk rules hold
MGCZ26 fell to 4371.0 after reaching 4414 overnight, leaving the one-contract paper position $360 gross underwater. Hold one and add zero: the stop at 4265 is intact and current upside to 4680 remains 2.9 times remaining gross downside, but crowded positioning, contango and restrictive policy cap conviction. Corn remains far above its 525 entry gate, while the two-year Treasury short has not produced its required post-auction rejection.
Gold gives back the rebound; risk rules hold

Decision first
Hold one MGCZ26; add zero. December Micro Gold traded at 4,371.0 at 9:06:45 a.m. Toronto after reaching 4,414 overnight. Against the simulated 4,407 fill, gross open P&L is −$360 and marked NAV is $999,636.50 after the existing $3.50 commission. The 4,265 stop, 4,680 target and October 30 time exit remain unchanged. One contract cannot be partially trimmed, and no new paper order was placed.
The decision is not inertia. From the current mark, gross target upside is $3,090 versus $1,060 remaining stop downside, or 2.9×. But the expected edge is fragile: a conservative 25% bull / 40% base / 35% bear tree has only +$149.50 expected net from the original fill after modeled friction. That supports retaining the already small 0.1783%-risk starter, not adding.
The best rejected alternatives are explicit:
• Wait on ZTZ26 until after today’s two-year auction. The overnight high of 101.9609375 never reached the required 102 rally, and the $69 billion auction closes at 1:00 p.m. Toronto. No pre-auction price can satisfy a post-auction rejection.
• Demote ZCZ26. The 9:30 restart produced a 538.25/538.50 bid/ask, still above the 525¢ ceiling. Review only after Thursday export sales or genuinely new crop evidence; a later price touch alone does not revive the expired setup.
• Retire the thin MESH27 expression. If equity support appears after Wednesday’s PMI, use the much more liquid MESZ26 and require a 7,810–7,820 pullback/reclaim.
Open position: December Micro Gold
What changed
MGCZ26 reversed from the overnight high of 4,414.0 to 4,371.0, with a 4,370.7/4,370.9 bid/ask. The session low was 4,327.5, above the 4,265 stop. COMEX Micro Gold is 10 ounces and a $0.10/oz tick is $1 per contract. CME Micro Gold rules
Risk remains the original recorded amount. Fill-to-stop gross loss is (4,407−4,265)×10 = $1,420. The portfolio’s 1.25 buffer plus $8 total modeled friction produces $1,783. A lower mark does not release that reserve. Stops are observation-based, and gaps can lose more.
The curve is not helping. Contemporaneous bid/ask midpoints were approximately 4,339.95 for October, 4,370.80 for December and 4,409.85 for February. December–February contango was therefore roughly $39/oz, or $390 per micro contract. That calendar difference is not an immediate fee, but it is adverse carry if a roll were contemplated. This paper position exits October 30 and is not rolled automatically.
Demand, positioning and priced-in assessment
Investment and official demand remain the essential support. World Gold Council data show Q2 central-bank purchases of 288.9 tonnes, up 62% year over year, while August gold ETF holdings increased 121 tonnes to 4,189 tonnes with $18 billion of inflows. These are dated supporting flows, not proof of buying today. WGC Q2 demand, WGC August ETF flows
The strongest counterevidence is policy and crowding. The Federal Reserve raised its target range 25 bp to 3.75%–4.00% on September 16 and described inflation as elevated and spending as resilient. Federal Reserve CFTC data for September 15 show standard-gold managed money long 142,394 contracts and short 9,278: net 133,116, down only 1,856 week over week. This is a long-biased market, not a washed-out base. CFTC positioning
Priced-in: 3.5/5. Much of the investment-demand and crisis hedge story is reflected, while restrictive rates and weak physical demand remain only partly discounted. Hold the small hedge; do not average down.
Re-underwritten outcomes
These are subjective path judgments through the October 30 tactical exit. Cash then earns 0% through January 13.
| Case | Weight | Modeled exit | P&L from 4,407 fill |
| Bull | 25% | 4,680 target | +$2,730 gross |
| Base | 40% | 4,400 time exit | −$70 gross |
| Bear | 35% | 4,265 stop | −$1,420 gross |
| Weighted | 100% | 4,421.75 | +$157.50 gross / +$149.50 after $8 |
From 4,371.0, the same tree has about +$509.50 after an $8 allowance. Moving 10 percentage points from bull to bear leaves only about +$94.50 from the current mark; a worse stop gap can turn it negative. That sensitivity is why the decision is Hold, not Add.
Corn: final pullback check, then demote
The September 21 Crop Progress report kept corn 57% good/excellent, unchanged on the week and below 66% last year. Harvest reached 13%, above 8% the prior week and the 11% five-year average. Faster harvest is immediate supply pressure even though the September WASDE cut yield to 178.5 bu/acre and ending stocks to about 1.6 billion bushels. USDA Crop Progress, USDA WASDE
Demand is supportive: export inspections for the week ended September 17 were 1.939 million tonnes and marketing-year inspections were 15.9% above last year. But managed money was already net long 414,460 contracts, and March traded about 13.75¢ above December at Monday’s close. USDA inspections, CFTC corn
After the grain restart, exact ZCZ26 traded at 538.50¢ at 9:30:50 a.m. Toronto, with a 538.25/538.50 bid/ask. At the ask, the inherited 575/535/495 terminal tree weighted 30%/45%/25% has −$107 expected value after $32 costs. Buffered risk to the 500 stop is $2,438.25. At 525, the same calculations would improve to +$568 terminal scenario value and $1,594.50 buffered risk. The bear scenario lies below the stop, so this is not a stop-path model.
Decision: Avoid at 538.50 and demote. The finite September 22 trigger failed. Re-underwrite after Thursday export sales or a genuinely new crop update; a later ≤525 price alone does not revive the expired plan. No standing bid and no retroactive fill.
Rates: the auction must happen first
ZTZ26 traded at 101.91796875 at 9:06:52 a.m., with an overnight high of 101.9609375. The inherited setup requires a rally to 102 and a 30-minute post-auction rejection below 101.984375. Neither condition is satisfied.
Treasury announced a $69 billion two-year auction with competitive bids closing at 1:00 p.m. Toronto today. TreasuryDirect At the model entry 101.984375, stop 102.15625 and target 101.625, five contracts have about $2,339.69 buffered risk and $3,402.50 net target gain. But an immediate short at the current lower price would raise risk and violate the sequence.
Decision: Wait. Earliest full qualifying post-auction bar ends at 1:30 p.m. Toronto. Require the rally, weak auction/price response and later rejection; expire the setup at today’s close if absent. No paper order is staged.

Copper has the strongest fresh physical/momentum evidence: Shanghai cathode inventories were reported at 43,900 tonnes, the lowest since 2023, while imported material moved directly to fabricators. But March trades about 10.3¢ above December and CFTC managed money remains net long 65,106 contracts. Current 6.85 is a chase below 6.894 resistance, not the desired support test. December Micro S&P offers far better liquidity than the retired March expression, but it still needs support after the recent AI/oil-relief rally. Micro WTI is weaker: November traded roughly $2.74 above December, so a new short would fight scarcity carry after a large decline. Wednesday’s EIA report is the next useful oil reset. EIA schedule

The Bank of Canada’s September 21 message underscored the stagflation trade-off: Governor Macklem said new tariffs could roughly halve fourth-quarter growth to below 1%, while oil and refining disruption could lift inflation.
