Gold recovers above the fill; corn is not worth chasing
MGCZ26 recovered to 4410.6, leaving the one-contract paper position $36 gross positive. Hold one and add zero: ETF and official demand support the hedge, but weak physical demand, crowded positioning and a 25 bp Fed hike cap conviction. Post-report ZCZ26 reopened at 543.25, well above the 525 entry ceiling; the crop condition stayed at 57% good/excellent, so the thesis survives but the payoff does not. The strongest fresh diversifier is a conditional short ZTZ26 after a failed rally, not an order tonight.
Gold recovers above the fill; corn is not worth chasing
Research cutoff: September 21, 2026, 8:07:11 p.m. Toronto. Prices are timestamped exact-contract IBKR observations from the evening reopening. Snapshot bid/ask, volume and open interest do not each carry independent clocks. This is a simulated futures portfolio, not a real brokerage account or personalized investment advice.
Decision first
Hold one MGCZ26; add zero. December Micro Gold traded at 4,410.6 at 8:06:10 p.m. Toronto, versus the simulated 4,407.0 fill. Gross open P&L is +$36 and marked NAV is $1,000,032.50 after the existing $3.50 entry commission. The 4,265 stop, 4,680 target and October 30 time exit remain unchanged. No new paper order was placed.
The two best rejected alternatives are finite, not open-ended:
• Wait on ZCZ26 corn. The official report did not repair crop condition, but the exact post-report contract reopened at 543.25¢, far above the 525¢ maximum. Review once in the September 22 regular session; if the gate fails, demote it until new crop or export evidence.
• Wait on short ZTZ26. It is the strongest fresh diversifier, but only after a rally to 102.000000 and a 30-minute rejection below 101.984375 after Tuesday's two-year auction. Current 101.8984375 has not produced that setup, and no paper order is staged.
MESH27 remains a wait only at 7,750 or lower after Wednesday's PMI evidence. MCLZ26 remains Avoid after the earlier 90.60 setup failure.
Open position: December Micro Gold
What changed
MGCZ26 last traded at 4,410.6 USD/oz, with a 4,410.5/4,410.7 bid/ask. The reopened session ranged from 4,381.4 to 4,414.0. The completed Monday session had traded as low as 4,360.6 and closed 4,383.9 before the evening recovery. COMEX Micro Gold is 10 ounces; a 0.1 tick equals $1. CME Micro Gold rules
The recorded risk is unchanged. Fill-to-stop gross loss is (4,407−4,265)×10 = $1,420. The portfolio's 1.25 adverse-scenario buffer plus $8 modeled total friction produces $1,783, or 0.1783% of initial NAV. Target net is $2,722, about 1.53 times the buffered risk. Stops are observation-based and gaps can lose more.
Monday's macro evidence was more nuanced than “rates up, gold down.” Treasury's official September 21 close put the 10-year nominal yield at 4.96%, down 5 bp from September 18, and the 10-year real yield at 2.62%, down 6 bp. Gold had weakened during the session despite that real-yield relief, so the evening recovery is welcome price confirmation—not proof of a dovish regime. Treasury nominal yields, Treasury real yields
Demand, positioning and carry
The investment channel remains supportive. August physically backed gold ETFs added $18 billion and 121 tonnes, taking holdings to a record 4,189 tonnes. Reported central-bank net buying was 23 tonnes in July and roughly 130 tonnes year to date. WGC ETF flows, WGC central banks
Physical demand is not confirming a shortage. China's August PBoC purchase was 20.2 tonnes, but Shanghai Gold Exchange withdrawals fell 22% month over month and 27% year over year. India's August gold imports fell 45% month over month, while local discounts widened to $78/oz by September 11. WGC China, WGC India
Positioning is already long-biased. CFTC futures-only data for September 15 show managed money long 142,394 and short 9,278 benchmark gold contracts: net 133,116, down only 1,856 week over week. That is mild de-risking, not a washed-out short base. CFTC positioning
Carry is also adverse for an extension. Contemporaneous December and February bid/ask midpoints differed by about $36.45/oz, or $364.50 per micro. That is a current calendar-price difference, not a guaranteed future roll cost. The position exits October 30, before December delivery bounds, and is not rolled automatically.
Re-underwritten outcomes
These are subjective path judgments through the October 30 tactical exit. Cash then earns 0% through January 13.
| Case | Weight | Exit assumption | Net P&L from 4,407 fill |
| Bull | 30% | 4,680 target | +$2,722 |
| Base | 40% | 4,500 time exit | +$922 |
| Bear | 30% | 4,265 stop | −$1,428 |
| Weighted | 100% | 4,483.5 | +$757 |
From the current 4,410.6 mark, the weighted estimate is about +$724.50 after a $4.50 exit allowance. These are not calibrated probabilities. A persistent real-yield/dollar rise combined with ETF outflows and continued weak physical premiums would invalidate the thesis before price necessarily reaches the stop.
Priced-in assessment: 3.5/5. Investment demand and long positioning are reflected; weak physical demand and restrictive policy are only partly discounted. Hold the small hedge, but do not enlarge it.
Corn: a valid thesis can still have a bad entry
The September 21 Crop Progress report left U.S. corn 57% good/excellent, unchanged, versus 66% a year earlier. Harvest reached 13%, above 8% the prior week and the 11% five-year average; maturity reached 58% versus a 55% average. The primary table matters because some summaries incorrectly described condition as improving one point. USDA Crop Progress
The balance sheet still supports a tighter-than-August thesis. September WASDE cut yield to 178.5 bushels/acre, production to 15.8 billion bushels and ending stocks to 1.567 billion. Latest export inspections were 1.939 million tonnes, up 39.9% year over year. USDA WASDE, USDA inspections
But the contract is crowded and carries. September 15 managed-money net length was 414,460 contracts. Monday's December close was 543¢ while March was 556.75¢, a 13.75¢ carry premium. CFTC corn
The exact post-report ZCZ26 last was 543.25¢ at 8:06:50 p.m., with a 543.25/543.50 bid/ask. Using subjective 575/535/495 outcomes weighted 30%/45%/25% gives a 537¢ endpoint.
| Entry | Expected terminal P&L after $32 costs | Buffered risk to 500 stop | Net gain at 575 | Reward / buffered risk |
| 543.50 ask | −$357 | $2,750.75 | $1,543 | 0.56× |
| 525 trigger | +$568 | $1,594.50 | $2,468 | 1.55× |
One standard 5,000-bushel contract fits the normal starter band at 525, not at the current quote. The previously discussed $6,000 margin reserve remains a paper assumption, not a broker or exchange initial-margin fact.
Decision: Wait. Require a fresh executable ask at or below 525 and above 500 during the September 22 regular session, stable depth and a renewed thesis check. If it does not qualify, demote it until Thursday export sales or the next crop update. No standing bid and no retrospective fill.
Fresh cross-asset challengers
The evening scan covered liquid rates, FX, equity indices, energy, metals and agriculture. No new contract cleared both economics and implementation.
ZTZ26: best fresh diversifier, but conditional
December two-year Treasury futures traded at 101.8984375, bid/ask 101.89453125/101.8984375, with displayed open interest of 4.458 million. The Fed raised its target range 25 bp to 3.75%–4.00% on September 16; that supports a higher-for-longer short-rate thesis. But noncommercial two-year positioning is already deeply net short, so chasing lower prices is poor timing. Fed decision, CFTC Treasury positioning
At a hypothetical 101.984375 entry, 102.15625 stop and 101.625 target, five contracts have about $2,339.69 buffered risk and $3,402.50 target gain after modeled two-sided costs. That is feasible, but current margin/lifecycle evidence is incomplete and the price has not supplied the rally-and-rejection trigger.
Wait through Tuesday's two-year auction; decide by session end or demote. No order is staged.
