One gas market cools while another heats up
March US gas fell4.8% while European gas rose8.1% over October9–16. Today’s expanded US warmth weakens heating demand, but does not remove Europe’s supply risk. Keep the two existing starters; retire weak watches rather than repeat them.
One gas market cools while another heats up
Research cutoff: 18 October 2026, 22:10:48 UTC / 18:10:48 Toronto. New-information comparison: 18 October 16:10:31 UTC. This weekly review resets the four-calendar-month thesis horizon to 18 October–18 February. Individual holdings retain earlier exits; a longer research horizon is not permission to hold an expiring contract. The complete October 4 monthly scan remains the monthly baseline.
Decision: Hold six March soybean-oil micros and four December Nasdaq E-nanos, without adding. Crude remains flat. No new assumed executions or pending orders. Refresh the Nasdaq valuation with its newly observed Sunday price. Demote weak gold, copper, SOFR, euro, generic gas and WTI-normalization watches to context. Corn and Canadian-dollar studies retain finite Monday evidence checkpoints. New silver, micro-Nikkei and micro-Russell alternatives fit meaningful whole-contract risk, but do not improve the portfolio sufficiently.
The week's useful distinction: gas is regional
IBKR daily session bars show March Henry Hub gas falling 4.78%, from $2.780 to $2.647/MMBtu, between October 9 and 16. March Dutch TTF rose 8.07%, from€78.650 to€85.000/MWh. These are same-contract session-close comparisons, not synchronized quotes or a directly tradable cross-market spread. The TTF history was delayed 15 minutes. December micro WTI rose 8.80% over the same dates,91.01→99.02; March micro soybean oil fell 1.43%,68.48→67.50¢/lb. The oil history was supplied in dollars/lb and converted×100. Daily bars are distinct from the exact-last references used below.
Interpretation: American weather and European supply exposure can push gas prices in opposite directions. Export-plant capacity, shipping, regasification and regional infrastructure prevent unrestricted arbitrage. A US warm forecast is not evidence that European import risk has disappeared. Conversely, expensive European gas does not guarantee that American producers can sell every incremental unit abroad. EIA gas outlook and Reuters, October 12, European storage and prices provide the dated balance context; the price changes themselves are the retrieved IBKR contract histories.
There is a genuinely new weather development. The CPC outlook issued October 18 at 19:00 UTC favors above-normal warmth east of the Rockies, with probabilities above 80% in parts of the Upper Midwest for October 24–28. Warm coverage expands versus yesterday in the October 26–November 1 period. Forecast confidence is 5/5 and 4/5. That weakens near-term heating demand; it is not a February forecast. Sunday gas prices subsequently softened, consistent with this mechanism, but attribution to CPC alone is unproven.
The next gas-specific tests are daily weather revisions and the October 22 EIA storage report, ordinarily 14:30 UTC/10:30 Eastern—outside this edition's 72-hour calendar. A warmer forecast can reverse, and regional inventory deficits preserve cold-weather upside. The conclusion is to retire a generic long watch, not automatically chase a short.
What is new, and what is carried
The Sunday reopening supplied fresh exact last trades. No additional verified material policy decision or quantified metals supply shock was established after 16:10 UTC. The earlier tug warning and Centinela settlement remain earlier information; neither is counted twice. UKMTO warning 177-26 described a damaged tug continuing its voyage, not measured lost barrels.

The dated April MGC price is a compatible same-month proxy for an April 1OZ study, not an observed 1OZ print. Standard NG is similarly identified when used to study a micro.
Portfolio: retain exposure, recognize fragile edges
The simulated book contains 6MZLH27 longs entered at 67.22 and 4NNQZ26 longs entered at 29,640.50. Those historical assumed fills and their original reference dates remain unchanged. The fresh 29,467 Nasdaq mark is 75 points above the prior 29,392 mark, adding $60 to indicative open value. Soybean oil remains Friday-dated 67.42. No unobserved intraday stop or target is assumed to have occurred.
After this mark, indicative NAV is $1,003,475.675, cash $1,003,542.475, open gross P&L−$66.80 and cumulative closed-trade net P&L$3,577.475 across 13closed lots. Oil contributes+$72 open gross and Nasdaq−$138.80; $35 open-entry commissions are already reflected in cash. This is simulated performance, not an executable liquidation value. Accounting completion time is shown on the portfolio; observation dates above remain separate.
Recorded entry-based buffered risk remains $2,915.10, about 0.291% NAV, and modeled gross margin reserves total $21,000: $2,500 per oil micro and $1,500 per Nasdaq E-nano. These are conservative paper reserves, not current exchange/broker initial-margin claims. Existing documented maintenance references are $210 and $476 respectively. No margin offset is assumed.
Soybean oil: Hold 6; no add
Low stocks support the starter, but low production is not the same as strong consumption. ADMIS October 15 reported September NOPA oil stocks 1.053 billionlb, down 12.3% monthly, with crush 196.3 millionbushels. October WASDE cut Indonesian palm output 2.2Mt to 45Mt and projected global palm stocks at their lowest since 2017/18. Opposing mechanisms are recovered crushing, substitution/imports and insufficient realized biofuel use. ADMIS October 16 says September D4 RIN generation rose but still lagged requirements; RINs are not direct soybean-oil consumption.
Retain February 12 exit, before February 19 micro termination, 64.56 stop and 70.50 target. With 70.50/68.00/64.56 terminal endpoints and judgmental 40/35/25% weights, the six held micros ($360 per cent aggregate) have remaining net outcomes +$1,080.60/+$180.60/−$1,057.80, after $28.20 exit friction. EV is +$231. Transfer five percentage points best-to-worst and double exit costs: +$95.88. Lower every endpoint another 0.25¢: +$5.88. A further illustrative 5% chance of stopping before a recovery to 68 costs $61.92, leaving−$56.04. This is fragile exposure, not robust downside protection.
Six additional micros at 67.42 have EV$202.80 but the combined probability/cost/0.25¢ stress is−$50.52. One new whole micro risks $223.90 to 64.56; six risk $1,343.40. Size fits; the economics do not support adding. Keep the existing small lot because the low-stock mechanism remains intact, and reassess after harvest/crush/consumption evidence rather than infer stop paths. CME micro agriculture.
Nasdaq: Hold 4; no add is a conviction judgment
Retain November 20 exit, 28,000 stop, and 31,650/30,500/29,600/28,000 endpoints with 20/35/25/20% weights. At 29,467 and $0.80/point aggregate, remaining net outcomes are +$1,732/+$812/+$92/−$1,188, after $14.40 exit friction. EV $416; probability/cost stress $255.60; all endpoints 100 points lower $175.60. An additional hypothetical 5% stop-before 30,500-recovery path reduces that by $100 to $75.60. This does not claim such a path was observed.
A new four-unit lot still has positive EV$401.60, basic stress $226.80 and lower-target stress $146.80. Therefore no add is an allocation/conviction judgment, not a claim that sizing or expected-value arithmetic fails. One new unit risks $373.95 to 28,000, or $623.95 to a 27,000 gap; four risk $1,495.80/$2,495.80. Existing entry-based risk is not overwritten by these current-entry figures.
Fed October 16 G.17 showed manufacturing+0.3% monthly, with utilities contributing substantially to the stronger total IP result. Table 2 showed Q3 semiconductor/component production+28.4% annualized versus manufacturing excluding selected high tech+0.1%. This supports selectivity, not a broad earnings boom. Production still must convert into sales, margins and cash. The ECB October 17 statement highlights concentrated AI exposures and tighter financing. The existing position already participates in the favorable earnings outcome. CME E-nano specifications give $0.20/point and $0.10 tick; December 18 termination leaves room for the November exit.
Current-price energy underwriting
All studies below include $3.50 commission per side and one adverse tick per side. The 1.25 risk buffer is applied to economically meaningful stop distance, plus costs. Scenario weights and endpoints are judgments. “Basic stress” moves five percentage points from best to worst payoff and doubles friction; further endpoint changes test uncertainty. This is a comparison tool, not an automatic universal entry gate.
WTI: Avoid current entry; demote. One MCLZ26 short at 98.30, November 12 exit, endpoints 110/98/84/75 and tail-sensitive 37/33/25/5% weights gives net−$1,179/+$21/+$1,421/+$2,321 after $9 cost. EV $42, basic −$142, endpoints+$1 −$242; reverse-long EV−$60. One-unit 110 stop risk $1,471.50, independent 130 gap $3,971.50: whole size fits. The earlier short closed October 17 for−$9 net; it is not reopened because price subsequently fell. The EIA week endingOctober 9 reported crude−8.6 millionbarrels with imports−791,000b/d. Distillates fell 2.5 millionbarrels to 12% below average, yet four-week supplied fell 0.2% year-on-year. Inventory tightness is not demand acceleration. Reinstatement needs changed refinery/import/product detail onOctober 21 or verified restored export flows. December micro terminationNovember 19; no automatic roll.
March gas: context-only, not endless Wait. Two micro-longs using the exact standard NGH27 2.631 as an explicitly compatible proxy, February 12 exit, endpoints 4.00/2.90/2.45/2.00 and 15/40/35/10% weights give +$2,720/+$520/−$380/−$1,280, after $18 friction. EV $355, basic $137, all endpoints−$0.10 −$63. One-unit 2.00 stop risk $797.75; two $1,595.50. A discretionary 3 point transfer from cold to mild (12/40/38/10) yields $262/$44/−$156. That adjustment is sensitivity, not a probability inferred mechanically from a two-week forecast. December short at 3.328, November 12 exit,4.50/3.65/2.90/2.50 endpoints with 10/35/40/15 weights givesEV$56.50/basic−$52.50/further+$0.10 targets−$152.50;4.50 stop risk $1,474. Neither direction earns entry.
The December–March standard price difference is now $0.697/MMBtu, with nonsynchronous observations. It embeds different seasons, not free convergence. EIA storage forOctober 9 is 45Bcf above the national five-year average, while South Central is 35Bcf below, including a 43Bcf salt deficit. Regional vulnerability preserves upside tails. Reopen only on a material weather reversal or October 22 regional-storage/production evidence that improves current-entry compensation. Do not assume European scarcity transfers automatically to Henry Hub.
European gas and products: March TTF's 8.07% weekly rise means scarcity is already recognized. A lower European inventory cushion supports a premium but does not alone quantify a new profitable long. US warmth is not a reason to short TTF. March diesel/WTI's prior dated crack reference $91.6626/bbl still produces only $81.74 EV and−$315.26 basic stress for the small modeled package; softer supplied demand challenges inventory-based enthusiasm. Undated HO/RB/Brent indications are not fresh valuation evidence. April Brent survives a February exit; March Brent terminatesJanuary 29 and does not.
New feasible challengers: do they beat the book?
March 100-ounce silver short — Avoid
At exact 58.11, one 100oz short with February 18 exit,68/58/46 endpoints and 30/40/30% weights gives −$998/+$2/+$1,202, after $9 cost. EV $62, basic −$57, all endpoints+$1 −$157. Reverse longEV−$80. A meaningful 68 stop risks $1,245.25, and 78 gap $2,495.25. The current CME FAQ confirms 100oz and $1 tick. February 24 cash-settled termination fits February 18 exit. Standard 5000oz and micro 1000oz are unnecessary sizing obstacles when 100oz exists.
The Silver Institute April 15 outlook expected total demand−2%, industrial demand−3%, and photovoltaic weakness, but also a 46.3Moz deficit, flat mine supply and stronger coin/bar demand. That is six-month-old context, not fresh October confirmation. CFTC October 13 futures-only managed money is 15,802 long versus 10,183 short, net 5,619, down 1,909: liquidation has already occurred. A modest positive mean does not compensate sufficiently for squeeze risk. Reject the trade, not merely postpone it for a better quote.
December micro Nikkei — Avoid both directions
One MNKZ26 at 63,910, $0.50/point, $2.50 tick, $12 fullcost; November 20 exit beforeDecember 10 last trade. CME specifications. Endpoints 69,000/65,000/61,000/57,000 at 20/35/30/15% yield long net +$2,533/+$533/−$1,467/−$3,467: EV −$267, basic−$579. Reverse shortEV$243/basic−$69; endpoints 500 points higher worsen the short stress to−$319.
Long 60,000 stop risk $2,455.75 and 56,000 gap $4,955.75 fit the portfolio's starter/thesis ceilings. The rejection is economic: exporter/technology earnings optimism competes with imported energy and financing risk at an already expensive forward level. USD-denominated Nikkei is not a direct currency position. Revisit afterOctober 29–30 BoJ/earnings evidence; do not create a permanent Wait. March 64,180 is undated and cannot manufacture a February bargain.
December micro Russell — Avoid the broadening bet
One M2KZ26 at 2,745.3, $5/point, $0.50 tick, $8 fullcost, November 20 exit beforeDecember 18 termination. CME micro-equity overview. Endpoints 2,900/2,800/2,670/2,450, weights 20/35/30/15%, give net +$765.50/+$265.50/−$384.50/−$1,484.50. LongEV −$92, basic−$212.50; shortEV$76/basic−$44.50. Long 2,500 stop risk $1,541.13,2,300 gap $2,791.13. Funding costs and weak nontechnology manufacturing breadth challenge a broadening thesis. Small caps are not automatically cheap because technology sold off.
Metals: smaller instruments do not create value
Gold demoted: April 1OZ using same-month MGC4247proxy, February 18 endpoints 4600/4320/3920 at 25/40/35%, costs $7.50/oz: long net 345.50/65.50/−334.50, EV −$4.50, basic−$46, another $50 target cut−$96. ShortEV−$10.50. Three 1OZ units risk $1,248.75 to 3920;3700 gap $2,073.75. WGC October 7 described September's 8.5% price decline despite $10bn/67t ETF inflows and 84t managed-money contraction. Rates/dollar pressure can outweigh flows, while fiscal-risk demand challenges an automatic short. These are September observations. The April/December difference is nonsynchronous carry/tenor, not a free roll yield; futures carry is not deducted twice. Reinstate only on changed rate/flow economics or valuation; basic long breakeven about 4201, with the $50 target haircut 4151. These are sensitivities, not orders. CME1OZ.
Copper demoted: exactMarch 6.675, February 18 endpoints 7.60/7.00/5.80,20/50/30%, $9.50 cost gives +$2,303/+$803/−$2,197; EV $203, basic−$31.50,2¢target cut−$81.50. One 2500lb micro risks $1,025.125 to 6.35 and $2,743.875 to 5.80 gap. CME micro copper. Antofagasta October 15 retained 625–655kt 2026 guidance, projected 630–690kt 2027, raised gross cash costs to $2.60–2.70 but retained net $1.15–1.35. Higher costs do not prove refined shortage. Strike settlements reduce threatened disruption without establishing an equal production-loss reversal. October 13 managed-money net 61,058, down 76, is positioning, not cathode consumption. Monday China activity must improve actual demand/absorption expectations; a positive headline alone does not reinstate the watch. February 24 termination accommodatesFebruary 18 exit.
Platinum: WPIC September 9 forecasts 265koz annual surplus but 283koz second-half deficit, following 548koz first-half surplus; stocks only 3.4 months of demand. Annual surplus is not near-term abundance. April 1664.10 short, February 18 endpoints 1900/1650/1400 at 30/40/30%,50oz, $17 cost gives−$11,812/+$688/+$13,188: EV$688/basic−$579/+$50 targets−$3,079. One standard short risk $14,760.75 to 1900; a 1500 long stop risks $10,273.25—both exceed the $5,017thesis ceiling. JPX100g minis solve part of size but add yen/metal basis, with no native quote established. The USD economics already fail stress. Avoid; November 18WPIC is a specific checkpoint.
Aluminum: EGA August 26 reported 25% of reduction cells restored. Westmetall October 16 LME cash 3014/three-month 3012, stocks 237,875t versus 238,875October 9. Falling stocks alongside cheaper prices show why depletion alone is insufficient. COMEXMarch 3103.5 is undated, not interchangeable with LME three-month. Illustrative 3600/3150/2700,25/45/30%,25t givesEV$580.50/basic−$564, risk $7,941.38 to 2850. LME5tminis exist but reducing size does not repair negative stressed compensation. Context-only.
Rates, FX and the remaining board
SOFR demoted: March 95.54 short, February 12 endpoints 95.85/95.60/95.35/94.85,20/30/30/20%, $2500/point and $32 cost gives net−$807/−$182/+$443/+$1,693. EV$255.50/basic $98.50; endpoints+3bp $23.50/+4bp−$1.50. One-unit 95.85 stop risk $1,000.75;96.25 gap $2,250.75. The March-versus-December price difference implies 4.460% versus 4.215% over different future accrual quarters—not a literal single-meeting probability. CME mechanics establish March 17–June 16 reference period, June 15 termination; the reduced $6.25 tick begins only within four months of termination. Both entry and February 12 exit use $12.50 ticks, so $32roundtrip remains correct. Reopen on material policy/valuation change; October 28 FOMC is finite, not a permanent excuse.

Australia is a distinct backlog, not an invented top trade. ABS October 15 reported employment−39,300 but full-time+34,400, hours+0.1%, trend+15,700. Long Australian three-year bonds could benefit if underlying CPI stops accelerating after the September 29hike, but part of the labor surprise was already priced and current DV01/valuation was not established. ASX current tick is 0.5bp, restoredJuly 2025. Reassess afterOctober 28 CPI; do not import an old 1bptick. UK, euro area, Japan, Canada, Australia and EM rates/FX were screened; Mexico/Brazil policy comparisons did not establish a verified futures valuation edge.
Agriculture and worldwide breadth
The screen also revisited Brent, diesel, gasoline, TTF, gold, silver, copper, platinum, aluminum, US/European/Japanese/Australian rates and equity expressions, major FX, grains/oilseeds, softs and livestock. This is a weekly opportunity challenge, not a claim to have freshly priced every exchange listing. Quote and model limitations remain explicit.

Events are assessed as proceed at existing small risk, not a universal blackout. No reduction is claimed without reducing contracts or actual risk. A calendar release is not permission for a conditional fill; new economic authorization is required.
Weekly learning and what would change our mind
The earlier Treasury short closedOctober 13 for−$678.875 net after its economic case changed. March SOFR long closedOctober 15 for+$5.50 net. A prior Nasdaq lot realized+$554; it is separate from the current E-nano entry. Later prices do not rewrite those decisions or prove hypothetical avoided stops. Current oil and technology positions share some inflation/growth exposure but can diverge; small sizes preserve room for better opportunities.
The useful improvement this week is retiring non-discriminating waits. A meaningful small contract removes a sizing objection; it does not transform an uncertain mean into an attractive trade. Corn and CAD must resolve at their named Monday checkpoints. Copper can be reinstated only if China's release improves its distribution. Gas requires changed balance/weather evidence; WTI requires actual flow or product detail. Gold and SOFR require materially improved rates/valuation compensation.
Probability calibration remains unproven: November/February terminal outcomes have not occurred. Preserve the dated models and evaluate them at their horizons rather than claim calibration from a few profitable exits. Waiting has an opportunity cost, but it is not a fabricated missed profit. Stops can gap; costs and margin are disclosed paper assumptions. No real brokerage order is placed or implied.
