# Gold is trading like a rate asset, not a crisis hedge.

Research cutoff: **2026-10-22T10:03:30.000Z**. Comparison cutoff: **2026-10-22T04:13:00.000Z**. The four-month horizon remains **18 October 2026–18 February 2027**, with earlier contract exits where documented. All eighteen board rows, six open simulated positions and zero pending orders were reviewed.

**Decision: hold three April one-ounce gold futures, two Nasdaq E-nanos, one micro Russell short, six micro soybean-oil longs, five micro corn longs and two micro natural-gas longs. No enter, add, trim, exit or reversal. No assumed paper execution is recorded in this edition.**

## Gold: geopolitical stress did not beat the rate hurdle

April one-ounce gold traded at an exact **$4,164/oz at 09:04:13 UTC**, $12.75 below the prior research mark and $13 below the simulated $4,177 entry. Reuters reported spot gold at a two-week low as rising oil reinforced higher-for-longer rate expectations. That combination matters: the same Gulf shock that creates safe-haven demand also raises inflation and real-rate risk. The morning price says the second channel dominated. [Reuters gold update](https://www.reuters.com/world/india/gold-drops-over-1-oil-rally-reinforces-higher-for-longer-rate-outlook-2026-10-22/)

The four-month endpoints remain $4,600 bull, $4,320 base and $3,920 bear/stop, weighted 25% / 40% / 35%. From $4,164, those judgments produce about **+$78.50 forward expected value per ounce after estimated exit cost**. Lowering every endpoint by another $50 leaves only about +$28.50. The position therefore remains a deliberately small convex starter, not an automatic buy-the-dip strategy.

Three contracts show roughly **-$39 gross mark-to-entry P&L** before future exit cost. Initial modeled risk remains about **$985** to the $3,920 stop after the 1.25 buffer and modeled round-trip friction, near 0.10% of opening NAV. Stop $3,920, target $4,600 and February 18 exit remain. **Economic decision: Hold. Paper status: existing simulated position, no new fill.** The exact last is not an execution claim. ## Equity pair: weaker prices, still-fragile robustness

Exact **NNQZ26 was 29,464.0 at 09:59:35 UTC**, down 153.5 points from the prior mark, while **M2KZ26 was 2,769.4 at 09:59:19 UTC**, down 9 points. The two-leg interval loss was only about $16.40 because the Russell short partly offset the Nasdaq long.

Using unchanged November 20 endpoints and judgmental weights, the two Nasdaq E-nanos carry about **+$225.20** marginal expected value, while the retained Russell short is about **-$4.50** standalone. Combined value is about +$220.70. Shifting ten probability points from Nasdaq favorable to stop and five from Russell favorable to stop leaves only +$17.20; doubling future costs leaves +$6.00. The pair is useful but not robust enough to resize.

Joint ordinary-stop loss is about **$1,250**; a joint adverse gap/rotation case is about $2,650. Keep stops at 28,000 and 2,900, targets at 31,650 and 2,670, and exit both November 20. The pair is not beta-neutral or loss-proof. **Hold +2 NNQZ26 / -1 M2KZ26; no add or rebuild.** [CME E-nano](https://www.cmegroup.com/articles/faqs/faq-e-nano-equity-index-futures.html); [CME micro Russell](https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/equities/russell/micro-e-mini-russell-2000.contractSpecs.html)

Meta’s $25bn New Mexico privacy judgment was issued on October 21 before earnings, not during this comparison interval. It is a legal overhang and Meta plans to appeal; it is not a fresh morning shock or an immediate cash-payment assumption. ## Held commodities

### Soybean oil — Hold six, no add

MZLH27 is valued from delayed same-month standard **BOH27/ZLH27 at 66.59¢/lb at 09:50 UTC**. BOH27 is a vendor alias for March CBOT soybean oil; this is a zero-basis valuation assumption, not an observed micro trade. At 70.50 / 67.50 / 64.56 endpoints weighted 30% / 35% / 35%, six micros offer about **+$253** forward expected value after estimated exit commission; a basic adverse shift leaves about +$118. Energy supports the complex, but high crude is not measured soybean-oil disappearance and strong crush can rebuild stocks. Target 70.50¢ and February 12 exit remain. [MarketWatch March soybean oil](https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/future/boh27); [CME micro agriculture](https://www.cmegroup.com/articles/faqs/faq-micro-agriculture-futures.html)

### Corn — Hold five, no add

MZCH27 is valued from delayed same-month standard **ZCH27 at 478.50¢/bu at 09:37 UTC**. At 550 / 480 / 450 endpoints weighted 30% / 45% / 25%, five micros offer about **+$345** forward expected value; a basic adverse shift leaves about +$190. The price preceded USDA export sales, so bookings and shipments—not the mark alone—are the absorption test. Target 550¢ and February 12 exit remain. [Farmbucks March corn](https://farmbucks.com/futures/grain-oilseeds/corn?contract=ZCH27); [USDA release calendar](https://www.fas.usda.gov/data/scheduled-reports)

### Natural gas — Hold two, no add

MNGH27 is valued from delayed same-month standard **NGH27 at $2.554/MMBtu at 08:51 UTC**, a zero-basis proxy rather than an observed micro trade. At 4.00 / 2.90 / 2.45 / 2.00 endpoints weighted 12% / 40% / 38% / 10%, two micros offer about **+$425** forward expected value; a severe endpoint test leaves only about +$16. The national storage surplus and warm late-October weather remain counterevidence. Today’s storage report is the next evidence test. Stop $2.00, target $4.00 and February 12 exit remain. [MarketWatch March gas](https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/future/ngh27); [EIA storage](https://www.eia.gov/naturalgas/storage/)

## Challengers: the dramatic markets still fail robustness

- **Copper — Avoid.** Exact MHGH27 was **$6.544/lb at 09:59:44 UTC**. At an unchanged $6.55 weighted endpoint, one micro has only about +$5.50 expected value; a basic adverse shift is about -$210. China destocking supports the bull case, but U.S. inventory/location distortion and endpoint sensitivity still dominate. [Reuters U.S. copper inventories](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/trump-tariff-threat-built-us-copper-mountain-effects-are-fading-2026-10-14/)
- **Oil/diesel — Avoid.** Delayed December WTI near **$100.04** versus March near **$93.85** implies roughly $6.19/bbl backwardation. Buying the front pays heavily for disruption insurance; shorting faces Gulf gap risk. Neither direction survives a reasonable opposite-tail test.
- **Treasuries — Avoid.** December 10-year notes rallied to **105.65625 at 09:59:42 UTC**. Under 107.5 / 105.75 / 104 / 102.5 endpoints and 25% / 40% / 30% / 5% weights, a long is about -$195 after estimated costs. Do not chase the safety rally while inflation and supply tails remain.
- **SOFR — Avoid.** SR3H27 at 95.500 implies a 4.500% quarterly average rate, 26.5bp above the December contract’s implied rate. A short has only about +$43 modeled value and turns negative after a small adverse probability shift.
- **S&P and FX — Avoid.** The standard micro S&P fits poorly at a meaningful stop, while the smaller E-nano still duplicates existing equity exposure without better robustness. No fresh relative-policy evidence supports a CAD, euro or sterling position.

## Simulated portfolio

PORTFOLIO_SUMMARY

## Method and limitations

Scenario endpoints and weights are analyst judgments, not measured probabilities or proprietary scores. Whole-contract risk uses 1.25 times stop-distance loss plus modeled costs. Dated lasts and delayed vendor prices are neither settlements nor observed executions. Standard soybean-oil, corn and gas references are explicitly labeled zero-basis valuation proxies for their micro contracts. No real orders were placed.

This is research and a simulated portfolio, not personalized investment advice. Futures can gap, require additional margin and lose more than a modeled stop.
