# Tech demand broadened. Futures did not chase.

Research cutoff: **2026-10-21T22:13:27.000Z**. Comparison cutoff: **2026-10-21T16:02:00.000Z**. The four-month horizon remains **18 October 2026–18 February 2027**, with earlier contract exits where documented. All eighteen board rows, five open simulated positions and zero pending orders were reviewed.

**Decision: hold the reduced equity pair, six micro soybean-oil longs, five micro corn longs and two micro natural-gas longs. Avoid copper and new rate exposure. No assumed paper execution this run.**

## The after-close signal: better demand, incomplete cash conversion

The technology reports were stronger in breadth than the index reaction implied. Meta reported third-quarter revenue of **$64.6bn, up 26%**, and guided fourth-quarter revenue to $73–76bn. Texas Instruments reported **$6.06bn**, up 28%, with EPS of $2.62. IBM reported $17.1bn of revenue and raised its free-cash-flow outlook. These are direct signs that advertising, analog semiconductors and enterprise software demand were not relying on one company. [Meta results](https://investor.atmeta.com/); [Texas Instruments results](https://investor.ti.com/); [IBM results](https://www.ibm.com/investor/events/earnings-3q26)

The offset was capital intensity and uneven conversion. Meta narrowed 2026 capital expenditure guidance to **$135–145bn**, lifting the bottom of its prior range, and quarterly free cash flow was negative $2.12bn. Tesla's net income fell **44% year over year** to $787m; revenue of $28.0bn slightly missed expectations even as adjusted EPS beat. Tesla cut its 2026 capital-spending guide to about $20bn and reported $1.51bn of free cash flow, so the picture is mixed rather than uniformly weak. Nasdaq E-nano futures nevertheless slipped after hours: **NNQZ26 was 29,909.5 at 22:07:29 UTC**, down 0.32% from the prior close. The market had already priced a strong earnings bar. The variant view is therefore narrower: demand breadth improved enough to preserve the long Nasdaq-versus-short Russell structure, but not enough to add after a rich pre-earnings setup.

## Equity pair: Hold, do not rebuild the trimmed short

The simulated book keeps two NNQZ26 E-nanos and one M2KZ26 micro short. At 29,909.5, the Nasdaq leg's target/base/stop outcomes are about **+$689 / +$49 / -$771** after future exit commission. At the exact **2,784.8** Russell reference, the remaining short's outcomes are about **+$571 / +$171 / -$580**. These are forward outcomes from current references to existing target/base/stop levels, not forecasts of certain returns.

The midday trim mattered. It reduced the pair from two Russell shorts to one, cutting actual downside risk before the earnings cluster. Since that decision, the pair was approximately flat to slightly positive despite both indices falling. Rebuilding the second short would contradict the improved corporate-demand evidence; exiting the hedge would ignore expensive funding and smaller-company sensitivity. **Hold both legs unchanged.** Stops remain 28,000 on NNQ and 2,900 on M2K, with November 20 force exits.

## Treasury supply: a constraint, not a fresh trade

The $13bn 20-year Treasury auction cleared at **5.469%**, about 0.9bp above the when-issued level, while bid-to-cover improved to **2.73** from 2.57. The tail and high clearing yield show that duration supply still needs concession; stronger cover says demand did arrive at that price. [US Treasury auction results](https://treasurydirect.gov/auctions/announcements-data-results/)

That mixed result is not a clean short-duration entry. It does, however, support keeping valuation discipline on long-duration equities. **Avoid a new Treasury trade.**

## Copper: a real catalyst, not a realized shortage

Teck said it received strike notice at Highland Valley Copper, with the earliest action at **08:00 Pacific on October 24**. Operations continued at the cutoff. This matters because the mine is a large North American source and the timing falls inside 72 hours. It does not yet undo the earlier disconfirmation from rising LME inventory and available metal. [Teck release](https://www.teck.com/media/26-23-TR.pdf); [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/teck-receives-strike-notice-highland-valley-copper-operation-2026-10-21/)

March micro copper was indicated **6.6770 bid / 6.6795 ask** near 22:05 UTC, with only nine contracts of new-session volume. One contract fits the risk budget, but sizing cannot repair a negative evidence-weighted payoff. The four-month 25/45/30 bull/base/bear frame remains negative after costs until an outage is verified or global available inventory reverses. **Avoid; reassess only on realization.**

## Held commodities

- **Soybean oil:** Hold six MZLH27 at the exact 66.28¢/lb dated last. Energy support remains, while strong crush and absent fresh disappearance confirmation prevent adding. Stop 64.56, target 70.50, force exit February 12.
- **Corn:** Hold five MZCH27 using the latest safely dated exact observation, 475¢/bu at 15:52:58 UTC. The later broker close marker lacked an observation timestamp and is not substituted. USDA export sales must confirm absorption. Stop 450, target 550, force exit February 12.
- **Natural gas:** Hold two MNGH27 using the explicitly labeled same-month standard NGH27 proxy at $2.574/MMBtu. NOAA's latest outlook favors eastern warmth into early November, negative for heating demand, while winter optionality remains small and defined. [NOAA CPC](https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/)

The soybean-oil and corn contracts cease trading February 19; the February 12 exits preserve operational room. The March gas exit is also February 12. No automatic roll is assumed.

## Challenger scan

- **Rates and FX:** the auction did not create enough asymmetry for a new Treasury position; sterling tightening is substantially priced and no cleaner currency expression emerged.
- **Equity indices:** earnings breadth improved, but the post-close index response says strong results were anticipated. Hold the reduced relative-value pair rather than add direction.
- **Energy:** WTI backwardation still prices current scarcity, while geopolitical route risk keeps both tails open. No cleaner oil entry than the held book.
- **Metals:** copper strike risk is conditional; nickel and aluminium moves lacked a better verified contract-level payoff. Precious metals had no superior fresh trigger.
- **Agriculture:** wheat would add grain correlation without stronger export evidence than held corn; soybean oil remains the preferred small expression.

## Simulated portfolio

PORTFOLIO_SUMMARY

## Method and limitations

Scenario endpoints and weights are analyst judgments, not measured probabilities or proprietary scores. Whole-contract risk uses 1.25 times stop-distance loss plus modeled costs. Dated lasts, closes and indications are not settlements or observed executions. March standard gas is explicitly a valuation proxy for the micro. No real order was placed.

This is research and a simulated portfolio, not personalized investment advice. Futures can gap, require additional margin and lose more than a modeled stop.
