# UK jobs improve, but the hiring engine is still weak

Research cutoff: **2026-10-20T10:20:29.510Z**. Comparison: **20 October 2026, 04:15:11 UTC**. The four-month research horizon remains **18 October–18 February**; each contract has its own earlier exit. This review covers the entire 17-row board, the three existing paper positions and new alternatives across rates, FX, equity indices, energy, metals and agriculture.

**Enter a two-contract March micro natural-gas starter. Hold five March micro corn, six March micro soybean-oil and four December Nasdaq E-nano longs without adding.** The gas decision is a small, price-dependent winter-risk allocation—not a prediction that the warm weather forecast has reversed. UK labour data improve the sterling narrative but do not make the current-price trade attractive.

## What changed since the previous edition

### UK: fewer unemployed people, fewer vacancies

The October 20 ONS release puts unemployment at **4.7% in June–August**, down 0.1 percentage point on both the quarter and year. Employment rose to 75.3%, while inactivity fell to 20.9%. Separately, vacancies fell **21,000 to 691,000 in July–September versus April–June**. These are different reference periods and measures, not contradictory counts of the same activity. [ONS employment](https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/bulletins/employmentintheuk/october2026), [ONS vacancies](https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/bulletins/jobsandvacanciesintheuk/october2026).

Regular annual wage growth was **3.7%**, with private-sector growth **3.0%** and public-sector growth **6.3%**; the public figure is affected by award timing. Total pay growth eased to 3.7% from 3.9%. [ONS earnings](https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/earningsandworkinghours/bulletins/averageweeklyearningsingreatbritain/october2026). ONS recommends reading the labour-force estimates alongside payroll and other indicators because some survey volatility remains.

**Our interpretation:** the economy is not deteriorating uniformly, but weak recruitment and restrained private pay do not establish a new demand boom. Sterling can benefit from a higher expected policy path while expensive energy and weak hiring damage real income. The useful variant view is to distinguish an interest-rate response to inflation from a response to healthy growth. A currency pays for both. Wednesday's CPI composition, followed by Friday's retail sales, is more discriminating than extrapolating the unemployment headline.

Today's released jobs data replace the earlier evidence checkpoint; this is not another indefinite Wait. The current GBP study below is **Avoid**, even with a workable small contract and a dated post-release spot proxy. No missing futures tick is being used to veto otherwise attractive economics.

### Energy: shipping capacity changes regional prices

[Reuters at 07:08 UTC October 20](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/asian-refiners-use-smaller-tankers-buy-delivered-crude-freight-rates-soar-2026-10-20/) reports Asian refiners using smaller ships, long-term charters and delivered cargo purchases as freight costs constrain sourcing. More distant US and African cargoes can trade at discounts while nearby supplies command premiums. That is evidence of expensive logistics and substitution, not a measured global production loss.

This strengthens the case against treating a higher oil price as a mechanically better short. But it does not imply every crude benchmark must rise equally: constrained export demand can depress the producing-region price. We therefore retain an explicit disruption tail and assess the diesel/crude package separately. Claims of attacks are not converted into invented lost barrels. The next EIA petroleum report must distinguish imports, refinery runs and products from a single crude-stock headline.

### Copper: stronger local tightness, not a confirmed annual supply cut

SMM's October 20 updates report a Yangshan warrant-premium midpoint of $138 per tonne, up $1, and Shanghai spot premiums of 600–850 yuan per tonne, midpoint 725, up 15. Nearby backwardation remained elevated at 740–790 yuan. Limited offers and resilient just-in-time purchases support local availability tightness; quotations are not all completed transactions. [Yangshan, 05:21 UTC](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104168583-tight-availability-in-the-market-scarce-offers-in-early-trading-smm-yangshan-spot-copper), [Shanghai, 06:02 UTC](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104168635-limited-warrant-outflows-coupled-with-resilient-rigid-demand-keep-spot-premiums-high-amid-elevated-backwardation-smm-shanghai-spot-copper).

The LME total published October 20 was 233,800 tonnes, up 1,625, while SHFE warrants fell 2,443 tonnes to 32,967. Different inventory measures and locations can move in opposite directions; a warrant cancellation is not proof of final consumption. The LME bulletin publication date is distinguished from its underlying inventory-day convention. [LME total reporting](https://news.10jqka.com.cn/20261020/c680882585.shtml), [SMM warrants](https://www.smm.cn/). Anglo's Q3 copper output fell 5% year-on-year to 174,900 tonnes, with Chilean weather and grades contributing, but annual guidance stayed 700,000–760,000 tonnes. Planned fourth-quarter grade improvement is counterevidence to extrapolating the quarterly decline. [Anglo production report](https://southafrica.angloamerican.com/media/press-releases/2026/20-10-2026).

The earlier China lending-rate hold, farm-fuel aid and Japan twenty-year auction are **already in the previous cutoff**, not new morning discoveries. October 19 crop progress, Canadian inflation/surveys and Treasury yields remain dated context. We have not verified a new US earnings result that invalidates the Nasdaq position before the scheduled releases.

## The new allocation: Enter two March micro natural-gas longs

The current reference is **$2.620/MMBtu for standard NGH27 at 2026-10-20T10:01:33.000Z**, used for **MNGH27** with explicit source-contract attribution. One micro represents 1,000 MMBtu. A standard contract represents ten times as much; using the micro makes an economically meaningful stop fit without artificially narrowing it. The plan is **two longs, $2.00 stop, $4.00 favorable target, exit February 12**, before the contract's February termination bound. There is no pending test/reclaim or invented trigger path: this is a current-price entry.

The mechanism is a small allocation to asymmetric winter scenarios through linear futures: a modest national inventory cushion can coexist with a thinner regional buffer, while late-winter weather and demand can reprice the March balance. The October 15 EIA release for October 9 showed national stocks 45 Bcf above the five-year average and South Central 35 Bcf below, including a 43 Bcf salt deficit. These are **old observations re-underwritten today**, not new storage figures. [EIA storage](https://ir.eia.gov/ngs/ngs.html).

The October 6 EIA outlook also forecasts supply growth covering growing demand and generally above-average inventories. Its April–May 2027 spot trough forecast of $2.60 is context, not an observed March futures quote or our February target. [EIA gas outlook](https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/report/natgas.php). The strongest contrary evidence is important. [NOAA's October 15 winter outlook](https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/el-nino-looms-large-over-us-winter-outlook), newly incorporated into this analysis but not newly released, favors warmer conditions across much of the northern and eastern US for December–February. That is horizon-relevant, unlike simply stretching a two-week forecast into February. High supply and a mild winter could keep March depressed. Seasonal probabilities describe averages, not the impossibility of a cold episode or a guarantee that any episode persists to our exit.

We retain the previous **12/40/38/10%** scenario weights rather than raise the bullish probability to justify buying. The endpoints **$4.00/$2.90/$2.45/$2.00** describe persistent tightness, moderate normalization, a mild surplus and a deeper surplus by the February exit. The $2.771 weighted mean is an analyst judgment, not a model-calibrated forecast. At the current reference, the two-contract outcomes are $2,742.00 / $542.00 / $-358.00 / $-1,258.00 after $18 round-trip friction. Central EV is $284.00, basic sensitivity $66.00, and the further ten-cent endpoint stress $-134.00. One whole micro risks $784.00 to the stop; two risk $1,568.00, about 0.156% of pre-trade NAV. The separate $1.50 gap risk is $2,818.00.

Why act now rather than retain Avoid? A cheaper suitable reference improves compensation while the smaller instrument limits the downside allocation. The refreshed analysis separates long-horizon weather risk from near-term warmth and recognizes that uncertainty should affect size, not automatically prevent entry. We accept that a combined five-point probability transfer, double costs and a further ten-cent reduction in every endpoint can make expected value negative. That is the reason for a starter—not a claim the adverse test does not matter. This is a revised allocation judgment, with the prior non-entry preserved as history.

The thesis fails economically if persistent surplus production and weak withdrawals rebuild the regional cushion enough to invalidate the modeled normalization, or if updated weather/demand evidence materially lowers the terminal distribution. Reassess on daily weather/balance developments and October 22 regional storage, not only at the price stop. No automatic addition after a fall. A $1.50 gap is separately modeled; a stop is not guaranteed execution protection. The December-short/March-long alternative exposes the book to a front-month cold squeeze, so we prefer the simpler March long even though its central expected payoff is similar.

## Existing positions: retain, do not automatically add

**Corn — Hold five MZCH27.** Harvest absorption remains the thesis, not crop destruction. October 19 progress showed 44% harvested against a 52% average; delayed collection shifts timing and can reverse. October WASDE projected 1.849 billion bushels of ending stocks. Stronger relative shipment pace than the annual forecast is supportive, but weak recent shipments and residual speculative length are counterevidence. [USDA progress](https://esmis.nal.usda.gov/sites/default/release-files/796110/prog4226.txt), [WASDE](https://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/wasde1026.pdf), [inspections](https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/wa_gr101.txt). Farm aid is producer liquidity, not a consumption mandate. Keep **450¢ stop, 550¢ favorable target and February 12 exit**. A demand deterioration or higher surplus estimate warrants reassessment above the stop; no add on unchanged evidence. December/March/May standard references are 466.5/481/489¢, at 2026-10-20T10:01:44.000Z/2026-10-20T10:01:39.000Z/2026-10-20T10:00:48.000Z. The 14.50¢ March premium already prices some post-harvest improvement; it is not free carry.

**Soybean oil — Hold six MZLH27.** The October 15 NOPA report put September oil stocks at 1.053 billion pounds and crush at 196.3 million bushels. Low oil inventories support the starter, but more available soybeans can enable a production rebound; product disappearance matters as much as feedstock supply. [Dated NOPA report](https://www.admis.com/ag-market-view-for-oct-15-2026/). Retain **64.56¢ stop, 70.50¢ favorable target, February 12 exit**. Higher energy prices can support substitution demand without proving realized biofuel consumption. No verified stock-rebuilding shock warrants trimming, and no new consumption evidence warrants adding. December/March/May references are 67.11/67.44/67.66¢, at 2026-10-20T10:02:20.000Z/2026-10-20T10:00:23.000Z/2026-10-20T10:00:23.000Z. Positive forward premiums are not evidence of an observed front-month shortage inversion.

**Nasdaq — Hold four NNQZ26.** Keep **28,000 stop, 31,650 favorable target and November 20 exit**. The lower current reference improves forward payoff but does not itself improve earnings. The October 16 Fed production report showed unusually strong semiconductor output alongside limited broader factory growth; production must still become profitable sales. [Fed G.17](https://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/g17/Current/). The dated October 19 ten-year Treasury yield of 5.15% is a valuation constraint, not a new observation today. [Treasury curve](https://home.treasury.gov/resource-center/data-chart-center/interest-rates/TextView?field_tdr_date_value=2026&type=daily_treasury_yield_curve). Netflix is a consumer/cash-flow checkpoint, not direct proof of AI-financing health; Meta, TI, IBM and Tesla test different mechanisms. Adding one has positive $70.10 EV and $411.83 stop risk. We decline to increase exposure because the improved price has not resolved monetization/funding confidence. Trimming one gives $217.50 forward marked contribution versus $294.80 for Hold, while actually reducing one contract. The evidence does not favor that sacrifice today.

Held rows measure remaining payoff from the current mark with exit friction only; new-lot rows include both entry and exit costs. They are not historical-position profits. Five corn micros move $25 per cent, six oil micros $360 per cent, and four Nasdaq E-nanos $0.80 per point. Basic sensitivity transfers five probability points from the best to worst payoff and doubles applicable costs. Further sensitivity also shifts every endpoint adversely: corn 1.5¢, oil 0.25¢, Nasdaq 100 points; gas $0.10, meal $5, WTI $1, wheat 5¢, crack $1; copper $0.02, gold $50, silver $1 and platinum $50. For macro studies, additional adverse endpoint shifts are SOFR +0.03 price points, notes +0.03125 points, yield +0.05 percentage points, Russell +10, Nikkei +500, S&P −20 and EUR/GBP ±0.005 against the trade. All probabilities are judgments. We do not assume an unobserved stop followed by recovery.

Risk is **1.25 × loss from the current reference to a meaningful stop + full round-trip friction**. Separate gap losses may exceed stop risk. Normal starters target roughly 0.10–0.25% NAV; the 0.50% thesis ceiling is not an invitation to use the maximum. The gas starter fits. Existing entry-based ledger risk is not rewritten by these current-price comparisons. Margins are separate conservative reserves, not the amount at risk or broker-confirmed initial requirements.

Positioning is dated context, not an observed intraday flow. The October 13 CFTC corn managed-money net long was 246,425, down 83,414 on the week. That overhang can pressure harvest absorption. No newer comparable positioning release was verified for gas, oil or the other futures; we do not claim a new speculative squeeze or use unverified positioning as an entry gate. The WTI short study retains 37/33/25/5% weights and 110/98/84/75 endpoints. At 100.71, expected net payoff is $283.00; this is genuinely positive, not an infeasible trade. A separate severity test reallocating ten points of the $110 state to $120 lowers EV by $100 and the basic sensitivity by $150. Reported freight constraints do not provide a dated catalyst for normalization before November 12. Prefer March gas's longer winter window and smaller separate gap loss; keep WTI flat. A two-package short-December/long-March micro WTI calendar uses the $6.65 premium, endpoints 15/9/5/2 and 15/30/40/15% weights: net −$1,706/−$506/$294/$894 after $36 costs, EV −$156, basic −$322, further −$522. Stop premium 12 risks $686.75 per package; a 20 gap risks $3,373.50 for two. Avoid this alternative independently.

March gas is the only new entry in this table. December gas shorts and calendars remain Avoid: a warm seasonal mean can coexist with a near-term cold shock. The December-minus-March premium is **$0.676/MMBtu** from asynchronous quotes, not locked-in convergence. The calendar study exits November 12 and therefore cannot claim February outcomes.

The diesel crack is **$91.4372 per barrel**, calculated as 42 × March heating oil minus March WTI. The 100-barrel micro-equivalent package keeps product/crude exposure explicit; freight-sensitive regional refining margins are not interchangeable with this listed crack. Short meal risks stronger feed/export absorption and a common crop shock; adding a meal hedge does not automatically reduce the oil thesis's risk. Wheat planting delay is reversible, and adding a second grain introduces basis and crop risk. The micro-equivalent oil/meal value is $556.40; the retained joint terminal mean $488.58 and $20.40 costs give long-pair EV $-88.22, reverse $47.42. The reverse has positive mean but adds basis/absorption uncertainty rather than replacing the simpler held oil.

March SOFR implies **4.525%** over its future accrual quarter, not one meeting's hike probability. Fiscal inflation can support a note short, but term-premium normalization and safe-haven demand oppose it. The stronger Japan auction is older context and does not prove a US duration opportunity. A short Micro 10Y yield future is economically long duration: its thin expected compensation is a separate decision from whether a standard note fits size.

Russell shorts are not a clean hedge for Nasdaq; industry and factor exposures differ. Nikkei has exporter/technology upside alongside imported-energy and policy risks; a USD-denominated contract is not a pure yen trade. Broad S&P upside overlaps existing technology exposure. No new earnings deterioration is established simply by a lower price. These alternatives remain Avoid rather than being kept as permanent pending orders.

Four December micro-GBP equivalents use £6,250 each and the post-jobs Reuters spot reference 1.3350, not an observed M6B futures price. Preserve earlier endpoints 1.39/1.35/1.31/1.26 and 25/35/25/15% weights; do not raise the downside endpoint simply because the headline improved. A 1.285 economic stop allows a meaningful 3.75% decline, with 1.26 a failed-stop/gap payoff and 1.23 a separate severe gap. Costs are $33 commission/ticks plus a conservative $25 unmeasured net carry/basis allowance. Without that allowance central EV is only +$4.50; with it −$20.50. Weak recruitment, partly anticipated tightening and dollar haven exposure do not support paying for a sustained recovery. The next BoE decision is November 5, not November 3. [CME micro FX](https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/microsuite/fx.html), [BoE dates](https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/upcoming-mpc-dates).

The October 20 Reuters spot observations are EUR/USD 1.1231, GBP/USD 1.3350 and USD/CAD 1.40761; precise observation minutes are unspecified. [Reuters FX update](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/dollar-euro-drift-yen-slips-markets-seek-direction-2026-10-20/). EUR is a spot proxy, not an observed December micro future; a ±0.001 forward-basis error changes the three-micro payoff by ±$37.50. CAD's 10,000-CAD micro-equivalent long uses 1/1.40761 USD per CAD, with USD/CAD endpoints 1.34/1.39/1.44/1.50 and 20/35/30/15% weights, $9 friction and $45.90 assumed carry. Central EV is about −$65.28; a 1.47 invalidation gives about $432 buffered risk including that allowance. Neither candidate has a stronger policy-versus-growth mechanism than the selected gas starter. FX carry assumptions are not measured exchange forward quotes.

The retired duplicate S&P and INR-policy rows remain context-only, with no order or current entry authorization. New GBP analysis resolves the earlier labour checkpoint; a future CPI surprise requires a new current-price decision, not an automatic pre-approved trade.

Copper is more constructive than a claim of absent physical confirmation would suggest. The exact micro reference supports positive central compensation, but local premiums may reflect inventory location and logistics rather than accelerating global final demand. With unchanged annual mine guidance and adverse endpoint sensitivity, we prefer the small gas allocation rather than add another growth-sensitive metal exposure. This is a conviction/allocation choice, not a contract-size veto.

Gold's exact April one-ounce quote makes a three-contract alternative feasible: central EV $130.50, basic sensitivity $6, further sensitivity −$144 and buffered stop risk $1,068.75. WGC's October 20 India update reports approximately 1.2 tonnes of ETF inflows in the first half of October and narrowing local discounts. That is supportive local evidence, not proof of a global flow regime strong enough to offset dollar/yield risk. [WGC India](https://www.gold.org/goldhub/gold-focus/2026/10/india-gold-market-update-seasonal-demand-shows-early-strength).

**Contract-universe correction:** CME's 10-ounce Micro Platinum contract exists; earlier reviews overlooked it when comparing standard platinum and JPX mini alternatives. Its tick is $0.10 per ounce, or $1 per contract. April PLM's undated close is excluded; the current dated standard April platinum reference is explicitly a proxy. The micro's $2,957.75 buffered stop risk is above the normal starter band but below the thesis ceiling; the decisive objection is its negative $118 central short payoff, not nonexistence of a small US contract. [CME micro platinum](https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/metals/precious/micro-platinum.contractSpecs.html). Silver's industrial/precious-metal mix remains exposed to both activity and supply shocks; a short is not a clean gold hedge.

A fresh three-package long-December/short-March micro copper study uses exact asynchronous 6.6775 minus 6.5745 = $0.103/lb March premium. At 7,500 lb aggregate exposure, premium endpoints 0.04/0.10/0.18 with 25/50/25% weights and $57 costs produce net $415.50/−$34.50/−$634.50, EV −$72, basic −$181.50 and an additional two-cent adverse spread test −$331.50. A 0.25 spread stop risks $478.38 per package, $1,435.13 for three; a 0.40 gap risks $2,841.38. Exit November 20 before December lifecycle exposure. Local tightness does not guarantee the premium contracts before that exit; Avoid.

The previously studied gold/silver and Nasdaq/Russell pairs do not become neutral merely by combining two legs. An industrial silver squeeze can hurt the former; a technology rotation can hurt the latter, which also adds to the existing Nasdaq thesis. We prioritize the simpler small gas allocation over adding an unsupported hedge. No relative-value profit or roll benefit is booked hypothetically.

UK labour, China LPR and Japan's auction are completed. US housing, earnings, EIA stocks, UK inflation/retail sales and Japan trade/CPI provide distinct tests. Friday's early European/UK flash-PMI releases also enter the window; the exact current publisher calendar was not accessible, so no unverified minute is assigned. US Friday PMI is outside this edition's 72-hour boundary. Existing positions proceed at current small size; no universal event blackout. ## Paper execution, portfolio and lifecycle

At **2026-10-20T10:21:28.417Z**, the simulation recorded **two MNGH27 longs at $2.621/MMBtu**, using standard NGH27 $2.620 observed at 10:01:33 UTC plus one adverse $0.001 micro tick. Entry commission was $7; immediate mark-to-reference loss was $2, for a $9 initial net effect. This is an assumed paper fill, not an observed exchange execution.

The book holds four lots and zero pending orders. NAV is **$1,003,577.58**, cash $1,003,517.98, gross unrealized P&L $59.60, realized net $3,577.48, total net gain $3,577.58 (0.358%). Margin reserves are $28,000.00; gross exposure $65,238.20 (0.065× NAV). The existing accounting convention records $5,499.85 entry-based open risk (0.548% NAV), including $1,568.50 for gas. This ledger figure is distinct from the full-friction current-reference research risk of $1,568 and the $1,570.50 conservative full-friction check from the slipped entry. Historical ledger accounting is preserved. The three old positions are retained without additions or trims.

New transactions use the nearest available sourced reference, adverse one-tick slippage and $3.50 commission per contract per side. The execution time is the current paper completion time; the reference keeps its real observation date. Existing historical fills remain five corn micros at 481.00¢ on October 19, six oil micros at 67.22¢ and four Nasdaq E-nanos at 29,640.50 on October 16. No backdated trades or past stop/target paths are invented.

March gas is financially settled. Its February 23, 2027 termination date is calculated from CME's one-business-day-before-standard-NG rule and the provider's February 24 standard March date; it is a conservative calendar bound, not a verified intraday exchange clock. Manage out February 12. [CME micro gas FAQ](https://www.cmegroup.com/articles/faqs/micro-henry-hub-natural-gas-futures-and-options-frequently-asked-questions.html). The $1,000 per-micro paper margin reserve is an assumption, above twice the historical $225 March-long maintenance amount in a May 19 broker table—not a claim of today's exchange or IBKR requirement. [Dated margin table](https://www.henghua.hk/cmsbigfile/2026/05/f32a64bc-9c2f-46bb-a4f2-6871c684998a/May19ANJIN.pdf). Retain $1,000/corn, $2,500/oil and $1,500/Nasdaq conservative reserves. Crop micros have February 19 termination bounds; Nasdaq has December 18. These bounds do not replace the earlier economic exits.

The research horizon extends to February 18, but the crops/gas exit February 12 and Nasdaq exits November 20. Outright metal studies use February 18; the copper calendar exits November 20; energy calendars/December crude use November 12, diesel crack February 10. No automatic roll is authorized. Futures carry is reflected in the selected contract price, not deducted a second time; modeled FX carry is separately disclosed where a spot proxy is used.

Corn, oil, gas and technology have different catalysts but can lose together in growth stress. Regional gas scarcity may diversify an oil shock only imperfectly. No correlation credit is taken. Limits remain 0.50% thesis risk, 4% total risk, 2% common-theme risk, 3× gross notional, 35% margin reserves, eight lots and a 10% drawdown halt. Scenario outcomes are not promised returns; all results are simulated.
