# Soybean oil: a better price earns a small starter

Research cutoff: **16 October 2026, 10:07 UTC / 06:07 Toronto**. Review window begins at the previous 04:15 UTC cutoff. Four-month research horizon remains **13 October 2026–13 February 2027**; individual contract exits are earlier where necessary.

## Decision first

**Enter six March micro soybean-oil futures in the simulated portfolio.** The standard March reference has eased to 67.20 cents/lb. Our existing forecast—not a newly more optimistic one—now leaves modest compensation after adverse probability, cost and endpoint tests. Buy oil alone: weaker crushing also limits meal supply, so the old oil-long/meal-short package is not the right expression.

The other leading candidates remain unowned. Fresh Chinese copper reports improve parts of the demand picture, but not enough to re-enter after the earlier exit. Diesel scarcity is real, yet U.S. product-policy risk can break the link between global tightness and New York Harbor prices. New yen and euro/sterling studies were tested rather than simply carrying forward the old watchlist.

These are research judgments and simulated decisions, not personalized advice or observed exchange executions. Forecast weights are subjective, not estimated win probabilities.

## What changed—and what did not

**Changed since 04:15:** March soybean-oil's exact last is 67.20 versus 67.45 in the earlier review. March micro copper's last eased to 6.7315 from 6.746; December micro Nasdaq to 30,089.25 from 30,192. New SMM reports published 07:19–09:30 UTC describe a post-holiday cathode-rod recovery alongside still-weak secondary-rod purchasing. A holiday rebound is not structural demand growth. [SMM concentrate](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104162435-escondida-mine-strike-risk-resolved-imported-copper-concentrate-index-falls-below--240dmt-smm-copper-concentrates-spot-weekly-review), [scrap](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104162513-limited-copper-price-rebound-no-improvement-in-copper-scrap-market-transactions-smm-secondary-copper-daily-review), [rod activity](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104162707-chinas-copper-cathode-rod-production-rebounds-2959-wow-as-industries-return-to-normal-post-holiday).

The BOJ's October 16 remarks, read by Deputy Governor Uchida, reaffirm further conditional tightening as underlying inflation approaches 2%; they do not promise an October hike. This is genuinely fresh support for researching yen appreciation. [BOJ statement](https://www.boj.or.jp/about/press/koen_2026/data/ko261016a.pdf).

**Dated context, not fresh announcements:** October 15 NOPA reporting, EIA inventories, IGC crop revisions and the IEA release decision remain relevant. The IEA is accelerating the remaining roughly 100 million barrels of an existing release, including more than 20 million barrels of diesel—not announcing 100 million incremental barrels. That distinction matters for any scarcity forecast. [IEA, October 15](https://www.iea.org/news/iea-governing-board-statement-on-energy-markets-and-security).

Asia's completed session and Europe's morning trading are incorporated; U.S. cash trading and the scheduled American data releases still lie ahead. No unobserved intraday stop, target or reclaim is assumed.

**Gold caveat:** April gold's 4,281 last is at 09:08, while its 4,267.10/4,267.40 book was retrieved at 10:00. Current-entry comparisons use the newer book. Do not treat these as simultaneous prices or select the older favorable last.

### One whole unit before ranking

For new trades, risk uses an economically meaningful stop, adverse ticks, commissions and a 1.25 buffer on adverse price movement. The ordinary starter range is 0.10–0.25% NAV; total thesis allowance is 0.50%. Stop losses are not guaranteed through gaps.

| Expression | Ordinary buffered risk | Additional tail / constraint | Result |
|---|---:|---:|---|
| One standard March soybean oil | About $2,001 | About $5,421 at 60 cents, above thesis allowance | Use micros |
| One micro soybean oil | $207.70 | $549.70 at 60 cents | Six fit: $1,246.20 ordinary; $3,298.20 tail |
| One micro March copper | About $1,218 | Forecast sensitivity, not size, is decisive | Wait |
| One micro diesel/WTI package | About $1,296 | About $5,046 divergence stress | Wait mainly on economics |
| One E-mini yen | About $2,298 | About $3,980 at USD/JPY 170 | Fits; payoff fragile |
| One standard March corn long | About $2,540 | Slightly above normal starter allowance | Micro economics fail stress |

The $15,000 total paper margin reserve for oil uses the existing $2,500-per-micro conservative assumption, not a claim about current exchange initial margin. It exceeds twice the previously sourced $205 maintenance reference dated October 6. No new margin precision is invented. [RHB margin reference](https://www.rhbinvest.com/futures/margin-requirements/index.html).

## 1. Soybean oil: enter small, without a meal short

**Mechanism and variant view.** ADMIS's October 15 account of NOPA reports September crush of 196.3 million bushels and oil inventories of 1.053 billion pounds, down 12.3% month-on-month. Maintenance and delayed bean availability restrained processing. Low stocks create a supply cushion problem; they do not prove accelerating final demand. The differentiated view is narrow: at the cheaper entry, the existing balance of persistence and normalization is worth a small position. [ADMIS](https://www.admis.com/ag-market-view-for-oct-15-2026/).

**Competing evidence.** Harvest availability and returning plants can rebuild supply. IGC's October 15 outlook expects record soybean production, while exporter reserves decline and derivative demand grows. Both sides belong in the forecast. We do not upgrade the probabilities simply to obtain an entry. [IGC](https://www.igc.int/en/gmr_summary.aspx).

**February 12 payoff model.** Each MZLH27 is 6,000 lb; each 1-cent move is $60. Six contracts expose 36,000 lb. From the 67.20 standard reference, $9.40 round-trip friction per micro includes commissions and one adverse tick each way. The assumed fill is 67.22; embedded entry slippage is not deducted twice.

| February 12 outcome | Weight | Oil cents/lb | Six-micro net payoff |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Tight stocks persist | 40% | 70.50 | +$1,131.60 |
| Partial normalization | 35% | 68.00 | +$231.60 |
| Supply recovers faster | 25% | 64.56 | −$1,006.80 |

Weighted endpoint **68.14**, net model EV **+$282**. Moving five percentage points from favorable to adverse leaves +$175.08; doubling friction as well leaves +$118.68; lowering every endpoint another 0.25 cents leaves **+$28.68**. A further 0.10-cent adverse basis/entry difference erases that residual. This is a small edge, not a reason to use maximum size.

The 64.56 stop is retained from the existing adverse case. A separate, unweighted 60-cent gap produces −$2,648.40 net economic loss and $3,298.20 buffered planning risk. Size is six micros, ordinary risk approximately **0.124% NAV** and gap planning risk **0.329%**. All aggregate, theme, gross exposure, margin and lot limits remain comfortably respected.

**Why not the pair?** At oil 67.20 and meal 354.20, one micro oil/meal package starts at $490 of net price value. Its retained 35/35/30 distribution over $870/$480/$53.60 has mean $488.58; after $20.40 costs EV is **−$21.82**. Reduced crush limits meal supply too. Buying oil alone avoids making an unsupported second bet.

**Carry, catalyst and invalidation.** No oil term-structure quote was refreshed beyond March, so no new backwardation or roll-yield claim is made. Forecast endpoints include the economic normalization risk; there is no automatic roll return. Proceed ahead of today's export-sales report because modest size and the loss scenarios fit; reassess actual demand evidence rather than impose a universal blackout. Exit on observed 64.56 or a credible combination of stock rebuilding, recovered crush and weaker oil disappearance. Add only after fresh support and new underwriting.

**Lifecycle.** Exit by February 12. CME's prior-month expiry rule gives February 19 for March micros; they are cash-settled and have a 0.02-cent tick. The four-month thesis does not extend this contract beyond its management date. [CME micro specifications and expiry rule](https://www.cmegroup.com/articles/faqs/faq-micro-agriculture-futures.html).

## 2. Copper: fresh recovery does not restore enough value

The earlier March copper long is already closed; this is a prospective entry assessment, not another exit. SMM's new reports distinguish improving cathode-rod activity from weak scrap demand. Concentrate tightness supports supply concerns, but post-holiday operating-rate comparisons overstate structural growth if read without their base effect.

At current March ask 6.736, keep February 12 endpoints 7.60/7.00/5.80 and weights 25/45/30. One micro, multiplier 2,500 and $9.50 friction, yields **+$2,150.50 / +$650.50 / −$2,349.50**. EV is +$125.50; five points favorable-to-adverse turns it into **−$99.50**. **Wait for a materially better price or stronger sustainable demand evidence**, reassessed with Friday industrial production and subsequent physical-market reports.

March last exceeds December by $0.1005/lb, but the two last trades are about 16 minutes apart. Treat this as an indicative curve comparison, not a synchronized spread quote or free carry. London prompt scarcity is not the same claim as March COMEX value. A hypothetical new long would retain 6.35 invalidation and February 12 exit before delivery exposure; no order is staged.

## 3. Diesel versus crude: location and policy matter

Buy one March micro heating-oil contract, 4,200 gallons, against one 100-barrel micro WTI short only if relative value warrants it. At conservative current books, the entry crack is **42 × 4.2925 − 90.72 = $89.565/barrel**.

| February 10 joint state: HO / WTI | Weight | Crack endpoint | Net package payoff, $40 cost reserve |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Severe scarcity: 5.50 / 110 | 25% | 121.00 | +$3,103.50 |
| Persistent tightness: 4.60 / 94 | 35% | 99.20 | +$923.50 |
| Normalization: 3.80 / 80 | 25% | 79.60 | −$1,036.50 |
| Demand break: 3.00 / 65 | 5% | 61.00 | −$2,896.50 |
| U.S. diesel/crude divergence: 3.80 / 110 | 10% | 49.60 | −$4,096.50 |

EV **+$291.50**. Moving five points from scarcity to divergence gives −$65.50; doubled costs and a 20-cent reduction in the base HO endpoint give **−$399.50**. The divergence weight is a joint-risk judgment—not an estimate of an export-ban probability.

Newly examined EIA regional detail, released October 15 for the week ended October 9, shows Central Atlantic distillate stocks fell from 9.725m to 8.922m barrels. Wider PADD 1 fell much less because other subregions offset it. This supports location-specific tightness, not its persistence through February. [EIA regional stocks](https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_stoc_wstk_a_epd0_sae_mbbl_w.htm).

IEA release acceleration and possible product-specific policy relief oppose the bullish case. Do not double-count an existing reserve commitment as new supply. **Wait for a cheaper relative price or evidence that reduces the divergence risk.** A crack around 85.5 is a re-underwriting level, not a standing order. December/March crude's indicative $5.10 backwardation shows nearer scarcity but does not eliminate March product-basis risk.

The diesel/gasoline alternative removes some crude exposure but adds spring gasoline seasonality; no independent joint forecast supports ranking it above oil. No fictitious gasoline quote or trade is used. Any March diesel/crude plan exits February 10, before MCL's February 19 and MHO's February 25 calendar bounds.

## 4. Cross-asset challengers and remaining board

The following are current-entry studies, not holdings. Positive EV alone is insufficient when a modest change reverses it. Contract multipliers and costs are applied before comparing expressions.

| Study; endpoint date | Retained endpoints and weights | Current net EV / decision |
|---|---|---|
| March SOFR; Feb 12 | 95.85/95.60/95.35/94.85; 25/30/30/15 | Long −$107; short +$30.50, stressed −$94.50. Wait for policy/price reset. |
| April micro gold; Feb 12 | 4600/4320/3920; 25/40/35 | Long −$183; short +$162, stressed −$178. Seven one-ounce shorts +$66.50, stressed −$171.50. Wait. |
| December micro Nasdaq; Nov 20 | 31650/30500/29600/28000; 25/35/25/15 | Long +$187.50, stressed −$177.50; short −$205. Wait. |
| December micro S&P; Nov 20 | 8100/7900/7650/7350; 25/30/30/15 | Long −$33.25; short +$13. Wait for independent earnings value. |
| December 10-year note; Nov 20 | 107.75/105.75/104/102; 30/35/25/10 | Long +$5.50; short −$85.13. Avoid new exposure. |
| December micro WTI; Nov 12 | 110/98/84/75; 30/35/25/10 | Long −$10. Avoid. |
| March micro WTI; Feb 10 | 110/94/80/65; 25/35/30/10 | Long +$3. Avoid. |
| December micro gas; Nov 12 | 4.50/3.65/2.90/2.50; 20/40/30/10 | Long −$24; short +$4, stressed −$76. Wait for weather/storage repricing. |
| March corn; Feb 12 | 550/480/450 cents; 35/40/25 | Standard long +$318; one micro +$23 becomes −$2 under stress. Wait for export evidence. |
| March wheat minus corn; Feb 12 | 230/195/150 cents; 20/45/35 | −$101.50 per standard pair. Avoid. |

Costs per round trip in those studies: SOFR $32; MGC $9; MNQ $8; MES $9.50; ZN $32; December micro WTI $9, March $12; gas $9; corn $32 standard/$12 micro; wheat/corn $64. These are analytical cost reserves; a future paper entry would apply actual contract ticks and commissions.

Gas's seasonal December premium is not guaranteed roll income. The latest verified CPC outlook remains October 15; regional storage deficits offset a simple national-surplus short. IGC's October 15 grain revision adds 7m tonnes to output and 11m to ending stocks, although stocks still fall 19m year-on-year. This blocks a manufactured bullish corn probability upgrade. The obsolete March S&P setup remains retired; INR remains policy context, not an order.

**Relative equities.** One long MES/one short MNQ has net outcomes −$1,625.75/+$674.25/+$1,924.25/+$224.25 under joint ES/NQ states 8100/31650, 7900/30000, 7350/28000, 7650/29600, weighted 30/35/20/15. EV +$166.75 after $17.50 friction is fragile; ES 8000/NQ 32500 divergence risks about $4,778. Reducing the larger approximately balanced package creates net-short equity exposure, not the same trade at lower size.

**Euro short.** Reuters' updated October 16 global-markets body gives EUR/USD 1.1255 at 09:14 GMT. Three micro equivalents (€37,500), explicitly assuming zero December basis, retain 1.07/1.11/1.135/1.16 endpoints weighted 20/35/25/20. Net EV +$205.88 after $66 becomes −$28.88 with five adverse probability points and doubled costs. Dollar weakness from U.S. financing concerns is an important countercase; wait for relative-policy compensation, not quote precision. [Reuters global markets](https://www.reuters.com/world/china/global-markets-global-markets-2026-10-16/).

**New yen challenger.** Study one March E-mini yen, ¥6.25m, using Reuters USD/JPY 157.89 from the 07:43 update as a spot proxy. Allow 1.1% negative carry ($435.43) through February 12 plus $19.50 friction. Endpoints 145/152/158/166, weights 20/30/30/20, produce net +$3,064/+$1,078.97/−$482.49/−$2,388.85, EV **+$313.97**. Five adverse points plus doubled friction leaves +$21.83; weakening every endpoint by ¥1 then produces **−$234.08**. Wait for policy or price changes that improve this robustly. The BOJ supports the direction, but U.S. carry and Japan's energy-import exposure remain substantial.

Product correction: the old MJY and M6J micro products are not current alternatives; CME notices delisted them in March 2022 and March 2024 respectively. J7 is the smaller current expression considered here, not an invented micro. [J7 specifications](https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/fx/g10/e-mini-japanese-yen/specs), [MJY notice](https://www.cmegroup.com/notices/electronic-trading/2022/02/20220221.html), [M6J notice](https://www.cmegroup.com/notices/electronic-trading/2023/10/20231016.html), [Reuters currencies](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/euro-gets-much-needed-reprieve-ai-wobbles-rock-dollar-2026-10-16/).

**New EUR/GBP challenger.** Three March micro euros long versus five micro pounds short approximately match dollar exposure at EUR/USD 1.1255 and GBP/USD 1.3329; these are nonsynchronous news proxies, not futures quotes. February joint EUR/GBP;GBP/USD states .90;1.28, .85;1.33, .82;1.35, .86;1.20 carry weights 15/35/35/15. After $69.75 friction and $140.63 assumed negative carry, net outcomes are +$2,436.50/+$67.75/−$1,438.50/+$436.50: EV **−$48.81**. Ordinary $2,062 risk fits, but the economic case does not. Avoid. [Reuters sterling, 09:37 UTC](https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/sterling-set-third-weekly-rise-against-euro-hits-3-week-high-vs-dollar-2026-10-16/).

Positioning remains dated context. No new post-release CFTC positioning is available at cutoff, and today's report will describe October 13—not current flows after subsequent data. No thesis is given a fictitious fresh positioning confirmation.

## Next 72 hours: specific decisions

- **October 16, 12:30 UTC:** USDA export sales—reassess oil disappearance, crop demand and the unowned corn alternative. Import/export prices at the same time test rates and FX inflation transmission. [USDA schedule](https://fas.usda.gov/report-release-announcement/weekly-export-sales-300), [BLS](https://www.bls.gov/schedule/2026/10_sched.htm).
- **13:15 UTC:** industrial production—test sustained demand for copper and earnings-sensitive equities. [Federal Reserve calendar](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/2026-october.htm).
- **Later Friday:** updated weather guidance and 19:30 UTC CFTC release; distinguish changed weather from stale forecasts and position date from publication date. [CFTC](https://www.cftc.gov/MarketReports/CommitmentsofTraders/ReleaseSchedule/index.htm), [CPC](https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/610day/).
- **Weekend to Monday 10:07 UTC:** shipping, product-policy, refinery and crop-weather developments. No scheduled outcome is assumed. Monday's later Canadian CPI falls outside this window.

The oil starter proceeds; the other waits are tied to the named evidence or a material price reset. Those triggers lead to entry, revision or demotion—not indefinite repetition of an old entry band.

## Actual simulated implementation and results

At **10:10:24 UTC on October 16**, six MZLH27 contracts were recorded as **assumed purchased at 67.22 cents/lb**, using standard ZLH27's 67.20 reference observed at **09:53:45 UTC**, with equal same-month basis assumed and one adverse micro tick. This was not an observed micro execution or a real order.

Entry commissions are $21; the initial proxy mark gives −$7.20 gross unrealized P&L. Simulated cash is **$1,003,565.475**, NAV **$1,003,558.275**, open buffered risk **$1,246.20**, gross exposure **$24,192**, reserved margin **$15,000**. Cumulative closed-trade net P&L remains **+$3,586.475** across 12 completed positions. The earlier copper exit remains historical; it was not repeated. One open position, zero pending entries; no capital reset or rewritten performance.

The small new exposure concentrates only on vegetable-oil scarcity. It does not hedge a broad risk-off shock or an energy/biofuel demand collapse. Preserve the explicit stop, gap scenario and February exit, and reconsider the thesis as actual evidence changes.
