# Gulf oil restarted fast—but WTI did not normalize

**Research cutoff: October 12, 2026, 22:05 UTC (18:05 Toronto). Four-month horizon: February 12, 2027.**

U.S. Gulf production returned much faster than the oil price did. Official estimates put Gulf oil shut-ins at **604,503 barrels a day, or 29.63%**, at 16:00 UTC Monday, down from **1,173,863 b/d, or 57.54%**, one day earlier. That is a 569,360 b/d restart. Yet exact December WTI reopened near **$92.37/bbl**.

The implication is not “buy oil” or “short oil.” It is that the storm is no longer the dominant price driver. Middle East conflict risk, tanker security, product-market tightness and expensive freight now matter more than Gulf restoration. Those forces preserve a large upside gap tail, while the restart and an Americas heavy-crude glut weaken the case for chasing the long.

**Decision: stay flat oil. Hold the existing simulated short one December ten-year Treasury note future, but add zero before CPI. No new assumed paper fill was authorized.** All prices below are research references or simulated marks, never real executions.

## What changed after 16:05 UTC

### 1. Gulf output restoration accelerated

BSEE's October 12 survey showed only five platforms still evacuated. Oil shut-ins fell to 29.63% from 57.54% on October 11; gas shut-ins fell to **531 MMcf/d, or 24.81%**, from 1,051 MMcf/d and 49.11%. The survey time was 16:00 UTC—five minutes before the prior research cutoff—but the official update and Reuters report became available afterward. [BSEE October 12 update](https://www.bsee.gov/newsroom/latest-news/statements-and-releases/press-releases/mma-monitors-gulf-response-isaias6) · [BSEE October 11 comparison](https://www.bsee.gov/newsroom/latest-news/statements-and-releases/press-releases/mma-monitors-gulf-response-isaias5) · [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/about-30-us-gulf-oil-production-shut-response-isaias-2026-10-12/)

This is a real bearish supply normalization for the U.S. benchmark. It does not establish that global barrels are readily substitutable. Reuters separately reported a glut of heavy crude in the Americas because high freight costs impede movement to Asia and Europe; a supertanker voyage from the Americas to Asia costs more than $40/bbl. Scarcity abroad and abundance in the Americas can coexist. Exact CLZ26 traded **$92.37** at 22:00:46 UTC after Globex reopened. March had no fresh last, but its exact bid/ask was **$88.94/$89.16**; executable bounds therefore left December roughly **$3.20–$3.46** over March. Reopening volume was thin, so this is a dated market observation, not a settlement or a claim of scalable execution.

**Decision:** Wait. Faster restoration weakens an outright long, but the still-wide curve and discontinuous geopolitical risk make an outright short fragile. A matched Micro WTI December/March calendar remains the cleaner conditional expression only if exact synchronous quotes and physical disruption confirm it.

### 2. Hammack reinforced the restrictive-policy case

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said inflation is broad based, financial conditions remain near neutral despite higher yields, and restrictive policy remains appropriate. In a later Reuters interview she argued that higher rates can cool investment- and wealth-supported demand while retaining an open mind about the October meeting. That is a hawkish direction, not a commitment to an October hike. [Cleveland Fed speech](https://www.clevelandfed.org/collections/speeches/2026/sp-20261012-trimming-the-sails-communicating-my-reaction-function) · [Reuters interview](https://www.reuters.com/business/feds-hammack-hope-cool-demand-inflation-without-job-market-pain-2026-10-12/)

Exact ZNZ26 reopened at **104.609375** at 22:00:32 UTC, with a 104.59375 bid and 104.609375 ask. The higher reopening mark moved against the short, but the fixed 105.265625 stop was not touched by the observed session range. Holiday-thin futures and a closed U.S. cash Treasury market reduce confirmation.

**Decision:** Hold short one ZNZ26; add zero. Hammack improves the fundamental mechanism, but Wednesday CPI remains the dominant decision event.

### 3. Copper recovered without confirming nearby scarcity

Exact December Micro Copper reopened at **$6.7615/lb** and March at **$6.8675**, leaving 10.6 cents of contango. The December contract recovered after 16:00 UTC but remained below the 6.7835 session high. Earlier SMM data showed mainland inventories up 34,000 tonnes over the week to above 100,000 tonnes, while spot premiums weakened. Those are same-day baseline observations, not new evening evidence, but they continue to challenge a nearby-squeeze interpretation. [SMM inventory survey](https://news.metal.com/fr/newscontent/104152591-post-holiday-inventory-continues-to-build-up-with-yoy-levels-still-at-lows-smm-weekly-data)

Two MHGZ26 contracts from 6.7615 to a 6.50 structural stop would risk $1,307.50 raw and approximately **$1,654.38** after the 1.25 buffer plus $20 modeled costs. A 6.96 target would earn about $972.50 net, only **0.59R**. One whole package fits; the expected payoff does not.

**Decision:** Wait. Do not chase the reopening rebound.

### 4. Wetter harvest weather makes a late corn short worse

December and March corn settled **483.00¢ and 497.25¢**, preserving 14.25 cents of carry. NOAA's 19:00 UTC outlook shifted the western and central Corn Belt wetter for October 18–26, raising near-term harvest-delay and short-covering risk. This does not overturn the large October WASDE supply estimate, but it weakens the timing of a late bearish re-entry. **Decision:** Avoid re-entry. Reassess after Tuesday's holiday-shifted Crop Progress release.

## Held position: fresh underwriting

One ZN point is $1,000. The simulated position remains short one December 2026 CBOT ten-year note future. [CME specifications](https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/us-treasury/10-year-us-treasury-note.contractSpecs.html)

| Item | Level / amount |
|---|---:|
| Assumed paper entry | 104.234375 |
| Current exact mark | 104.609375 |
| Open gross P&L | **−$375.00** |
| Fixed stop | 105.265625 |
| Remaining mark-to-stop distance | **$656.25** |
| Target | 101.50 |
| Mark-to-target distance | **$3,109.38** |
| Mandatory exit / review | November 20 |

The stop is an economic invalidation, not a guaranteed fill price. With the project's one-tick adverse exit-slippage convention and $3.50 commission, any forward exit result would be $19.125 worse than the raw mark arithmetic.

Scenario weights are judgments, not observed probabilities:

| Scenario through Nov. 20 | Weight | ZNZ26 exit | Gross result from entry |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Softer CPI / bond squeeze | 30% | 105.265625 stop | −$1,031.25 |
| Restrictive-policy range | 45% | 103.50 | +$734.38 |
| Inflation and term premium reassert | 25% | 101.50 target | +$2,734.38 |

Weighted gross value remains about **+$629** before future exit costs. Moving ten percentage points from the target branch to the stop branch reduces it by about $377. The current mark's favorable forward geometry does not prove a higher target probability.

**Invalidation:** exit the simulated short on a verified 105.265625 reference, subject to gap risk, or if new inflation and labor evidence establishes a durable bond-bull regime. No add before CPI.

## Other markets and challenger scan

**Gold:** MGCZ26 reopened at **$4,199.0/oz**, after a $4,190.6 settlement and a $4,178.0–$4,242.3 session range. The bounce has not broken the session structure. One MGC can fit a starter, but CPI can reprice real yields and the path to the high crosses several resistance bands. Wait.

**Equities:** MESZ26 reopened at **7,858.0**. One micro with a 300-point stop risks $1,500 raw and $1,875 before lifecycle costs, so whole-contract fit is not the obstacle. Expected strong earnings and the absence of an independent valuation shock leave no defensible four-month probability edge. Wait.

**FX:** A short euro position would duplicate the existing long-dollar / higher-rate exposure. A fresh exact December euro quote was not verified, so it is not ranked on an inadmissible snippet. Wait.

**Natural gas:** January/ March remained a watch only. Exact fresh lasts were unavailable at the reopen; live bids and asks were near 3.93 and 2.79. Overseas LNG tightness is not enough to buy Henry Hub without current storage, weather and feedgas confirmation.

The broad scan found no challenger with better evidence, cleaner invalidation and higher net payoff than retaining the bounded ZN position plus cash. This is a switch hurdle, not a quota.

## Bottom line

Gulf production restoration removed much of the storm-driven scarcity, but WTI's resilience shows that global conflict, freight and product markets now set the marginal risk premium. That makes both the long and the short unattractive. In rates, Hammack's fresh restrictive-policy message supports the existing Treasury short, but CPI remains too important to add ahead of it. Hold one ZNZ26, add zero, and keep every other challenger on wait or avoid.
