# Oil's ceasefire discount reversed before supply arrived

**Research cutoff: October 12, 2026, 10:06 UTC (06:06 Toronto). Four-month horizon: February 12, 2027.**

December WTI retraced its early decline in the European session, rising from **$89.49 to $91.74/bbl** between the 04:03 and 10:04 UTC exact-contract snapshots. The reversal followed Ukraine's allegation that Russia violated an announced energy ceasefire with a strike on a Kharkiv power plant. The December premium to March widened from **$3.03 to $3.60/bbl**.

That is the useful signal: an announcement can lower risk premia briefly, but it is not the same as delivered diesel, restored crude flows or an enforceable ceasefire. The economic decision remains **Wait** on an oil-normalization short. The existing simulated short one December ten-year Treasury future is **Held** with no addition, and copper remains a **Wait** after a fresh post-holiday inventory build weakened the demand confirmation.

No new position was assumed filled. All prices are research references, not real orders.

## What changed after 04:05 UTC

### 1. WTI reversed as ceasefire credibility weakened

Exact December WTI traded **$91.74** at 10:04:01 UTC; March was **$88.14** at 10:01:46 UTC. December's $3.60 premium to March is meaningful backwardation: the market still values prompt barrels more than later supply.

At 09:50 UTC, Reuters reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused Russia of violating the announced energy ceasefire after a strike on a Kharkiv thermal power plant. Russia had not commented in that report. This is an attributed allegation, not independent proof of the strike or a settled ceasefire framework. [Reuters: Ukraine alleges a ceasefire violation](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/ukraine-accuses-russia-violating-trumps-energy-ceasefire-eu-imposes-new-2026-10-12/)

OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais separately repeated that 2026 oil-demand growth was around 0.4 million b/d versus 1.4 million at the start of the year, with deferred demand expected in 2027. This is not a new one-million-barrel monthly downgrade: the September forecast was already near 0.4 million b/d. [Reuters: OPEC demand remarks](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/opec-cuts-2026-oil-demand-growth-forecast-400000-bpd-sees-pent-up-demand-2027-2026-10-12/)

The latest EIA physical baseline remains mixed. U.S. crude inventories were about 1% above their five-year average, while gasoline was 6% below and distillates 12% below. That makes refined products tighter than crude and leaves an outright WTI short exposed to product-led support. [EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report](https://ir.eia.gov/wpsr/summary.txt)

**Decision:** Wait. A normalization short needs delivered Russian barrels or diesel, confirmed Gulf restoration and softer prompt structure. The oil rebound and wider backwardation are the opposite of that entry signal.

### 2. Copper rose while Chinese inventories rebuilt

Exact December Micro Copper traded **$6.7735/lb** at 10:03:50 UTC, up three cents from the 04:03 checkpoint. Yet SMM reported that mainstream Chinese copper inventories increased **34,000 tonnes week over week** to more than 100,000 tonnes after the holiday. East China arrivals drove the build, while high prices and wide spreads restrained downstream purchases. Inventories remained 64,300 tonnes below a year earlier, so the evidence is cautionary rather than a complete bearish reversal. [SMM post-holiday copper inventories](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104152591-post-holiday-inventory-continues-to-build-up-with-yoy-levels-still-at-lows-smm-weekly-data)

SMM's secondary-copper survey added that scrap was available but high financing costs limited processors' buying; its quoted spot premium fell to RMB160/t. [SMM secondary-copper review](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104152641-copper-prices-retreat-from-highs-secondary-copper-rod-enterprises-buy-the-dip-smm-secondary-copper-daily-review)

The intended watch package is two MHGZ26 contracts, representing 5,000 lb. At 6.7735, the unchanged 6.50 tactical stop produces $1,367.50 raw risk; the required 1.25 buffer plus $20 modeled friction raises risk to **$1,729.38**, or about 0.173% of NAV. A 6.96 target pays $912.50 net, only **0.528R**.

**Decision:** Wait for 6.628 or lower and physical stabilization. The package fits the risk budget, but its payoff is poor and the newest physical evidence does not confirm demand-led tightness.

### 3. The Treasury short recovered, but CPI still controls the next decision

Exact ZNZ26 traded **104.515625** at 10:04:03 UTC. The observed session high was 104.71875, still below the fixed **105.265625 stop**; the low was 104.453125, far above the 101.50 target.

U.S. cash fixed-income markets are closed for the holiday, so there is no fresh cash-Treasury price discovery. CME's official holiday schedule nevertheless says its products retain normal settlements; futures are not closed. [SIFMA holiday recommendation](https://www.sifma.org/news/press-releases/sifma-fixed-income-market-close-recommendations-in-the-u-s-the-u-k-and-japan-for-u-s-columbus-day-and-japan-health-and-sports-day-holidays-2026) · [CME settlement schedule](https://www.cmegroup.com/tools-information/holiday-calendar/files/2026/columbus-day-holiday-settlement-times-2026.pdf)

The latest official cash curve, for October 9, had two-year yields at 4.80% and ten-year yields at 5.24%. The +44 bp slope and 2.91% ten-year real yield remain consistent with restrictive policy and term-premium pressure, but those are carried Friday observations. **Decision:** Hold one ZNZ26; add zero. One whole contract cannot be trimmed without exiting. The stop, target and November 20 time exit are unchanged.

## Held position and payoff

One ZN point is $1,000 and the outright tick is 1/64, or $15.625. The position is a simulated short one December 2026 CBOT ten-year note future. [CME Treasury futures mechanics](https://www.cmegroup.com/trading/interest-rates/basics-of-us-treasury-futures.html)

| Item | Level / amount |
|---|---:|
| Assumed paper entry | 104.234375 |
| Current exact mark | 104.515625 |
| Open gross P&L | **−$281.25** |
| Fixed stop | 105.265625 |
| Remaining mark-to-stop distance | **$750.00** |
| Target | 101.50 |
| Mark-to-target distance | **$3,015.63** |
| Mandatory exit / review | November 20 |

Scenario weights are judgments, not measured probabilities:

| Scenario through Nov. 20 | Weight | ZNZ26 path | Gross result from entry |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Softer core inflation / bond bull | 30% | 105.265625 stop | −$1,031.25 |
| Restrictive-policy range | 45% | 103.50 | +$734.38 |
| Inflation and term premium reassert | 25% | 101.50 target | +$2,734.38 |

The weighted gross result is about **+$629** before additional exit costs. Sensitivity is high: shifting ten percentage points from the target branch to the stop branch cuts the estimate by roughly $377. The position is held because the original stop still bounds the thesis and the target remains meaningful; it is not added because CPI can gap the contract and holiday cash-market closure reduces cross-market confirmation.

## Other markets

**Gold:** MGCZ26 reversed to **4,198.0** by 10:05 UTC, with a 4,192.8–4,242.3 session range. One MGC to a 3,990 structural stop risks about $2,610 after the 1.25 buffer and modeled costs, while 4,400 offers roughly $2,010 net, or only 0.77R. Wait. [Reuters gold update](https://www.reuters.com/world/india/gold-gains-weaker-oil-dollar-us-inflation-data-focus-2026-10-12/)

**Natural gas:** January traded **3.903** and March **2.744**, leaving a $1.159 winter premium. EIA's latest storage report showed 3,500 Bcf, 2.0% above the five-year average but 3.6% below a year earlier; South Central salt storage remained tighter. Adequate national stocks favor normalization, but weather and a crowded speculative short prevent a clean outright sale. [EIA natural-gas storage](https://ir.eia.gov/ngs/ngs.html)

**Corn:** December and March traded **481.25** and **495.50**, preserving 14.25 cents of carry. October WASDE raised production to 16.034 billion bushels and ending stocks to 1.849 billion, but the post-report drop already consumed much of the short's payoff. Avoid chasing; Tuesday's harvest update is the next useful physical test. [USDA October WASDE](https://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/wasde1026.pdf)

**Equities and FX:** MESZ26 was **7,868.75**. The oil reversal, elevated real yields, bank earnings and CPI leave two-way index risk. Dollar strength is extended and another USD-long expression would overlap the existing duration short. No new package displaced the incumbent position.

## Bottom line

Oil's six-hour reversal is more informative than the initial ceasefire headline. Physical normalization has not been delivered, prompt backwardation widened and the geopolitical premise deteriorated. Copper's higher price also arrived with weaker post-holiday inventory evidence. Keep new risk at zero, retain the bounded Treasury short, and let CPI—not holiday-thin headlines—decide the next portfolio change.
