# Copper rose, but demand did not confirm it

**Research cutoff: October 12, 2026, 04:05 UTC (00:05 Toronto). Four-month horizon: February 12, 2027.**

The reopened futures session supplied cleaner prices but no stronger trade than the position already in the book. December micro copper reached **$6.7435/lb**, yet fresh Asian-market commentary said the preceding rise was driven by short covering while Shanghai premiums softened, arriving supply increased and high prices restrained downstream buying. That combination is not confirmation of demand-led tightness.

The economic decision is therefore:

- **Hold** the existing simulated short one December ten-year Treasury-note future; add zero.
- **Wait** on copper. The corrected two-contract micro package now offers only about **0.69R** to the unchanged tactical target.
- **Wait** on oil. Prices fell on an unconfirmed energy-ceasefire and diesel-supply story, but the curve still signals prompt scarcity.
- **Avoid** reopening corn after the post-WASDE drop. The surplus thesis remains valid; the entry payoff does not.

No new position was assumed filled. The paper book was re-marked only. All prices below are research references, not real orders.

## What changed after the weekly review

### 1. Copper price rose while the physical confirmation weakened

Exact December Micro Copper traded **6.7435** at 04:03:03 UTC, with a 6.7440/6.7450 bid/ask. The same contract's session range was 6.6920–6.7495.

The fresh information was not a new inventory draw. SMM's October 12 morning briefing described the prior LME and SHFE gains as short covering, with open interest down 1,582 and 1,190 contracts respectively. It also reported the October 9 Shanghai spot premium averaging RMB540/t, down RMB170/t, incoming imported metal and cautious downstream purchasing at high prices. Guangdong remained tighter, so the signal is mixed rather than uniformly bearish. [SMM copper morning summary](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104150645-supply-marginally-loosening-high-prices-may-be-hard-to-sustain-smm-copper-morning-meeting-summary)

That matters because the differentiated copper view was never simply “electrification demand rises.” The tradable mechanism required prompt physical scarcity to persist strongly enough that a futures buyer was compensated for an expensive entry and the December-to-March roll hurdle. Fresh evidence says the price advance lacked new-long confirmation.

October 6 CFTC data remain useful but dated: managed money held 61,134 net copper contracts, down 16,924 in a week. This is consistent with liquidation occurring alongside tight physical metal, but it does not prove that overnight buying was fundamental. [CFTC metals report](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/other_lf.htm)

The earlier October 9 cash backwardation and visible-stock decline remain supporting context, not fresh overnight evidence. The accessible official LME stock download required authentication in this run, so those figures are not upgraded beyond their prior dated source status. [LME warehouse reports](https://www.lme.com/Market-data/Reports-and-data/Warehouse-and-stocks-reports/Stock-breakdown-report)

### 2. Oil repriced normalization before normalization was verified

Exact December WTI traded **$89.49/bbl** at 04:03:38 UTC, down $1.52 from the October 9 settlement. March WTI was **$86.46**, leaving December about **$3.03 above March**. That backwardation is an important warning: the market still charges for prompt barrels, and an outright short can pay adverse roll or convergence if physical tightness persists.

Reuters reported that oil fell on hopes for Russian diesel relief and a Russia–Ukraine energy ceasefire, while the parties had not confirmed an implemented agreement. The event therefore changes probabilities; it does not yet prove delivered supply. [Reuters energy report](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/oil-climbs-mideast-conflict-tanker-attacks-persist-2026-10-11/)

The International Energy Agency's October 11 statement urged accelerated releases, prioritization of diesel and consideration of additional volumes. It did not provide a new delivered quantity or timing. [IEA diesel statement](https://www.iea.org/news/iea-statement-on-responding-to-the-global-diesel-market-situation)

Physical context still favors products over a broad crude-short thesis. The latest EIA weekly summary showed U.S. crude stocks 1% above the five-year average, gasoline 6% below and distillates 12% below. That is why Micro ULSD is a more direct conditional normalization expression than crude—but only after actual delivered diesel, softer product structure and a verified micro quote. [EIA weekly petroleum summary](https://ir.eia.gov/wpsr/summary.txt)

### 3. Treasury futures rallied, but the existing stop remained intact

Exact ZNZ26 traded **104.6875** at 04:01:59 UTC. The reopened-session range checked through about 04:03 UTC was 104.453125–104.71875. Neither the existing **105.265625 stop** nor **101.50 target** traded in that observed interval.

The bond rally is adverse to the short and probably reflects some combination of softer growth evidence, lower oil and event positioning. It is not yet a macro thesis break. The September FOMC raised the federal-funds target to 3.75%–4.00%, and Governor Waller said on October 8 that near-term policy focus remained inflation; 16 of 18 September participants anticipated at least one more 2026 hike. [Federal Reserve September decision](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20260916a.htm) · [Waller speech](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/speech/waller20261008a.htm)

Official H.15 observations through October 8 put the two-year yield at 4.75%, ten-year at 5.22%, ten-year real yield at 2.87% and effective federal-funds rate at 3.88%. The derived 2s10s slope was +47 basis points and the ten-year breakeven 2.35%. Those are dated observations, not overnight cash-market quotes. ## Held position: December ten-year note short

One ZN point is $1,000; the outright tick is 1/64, or $15.625. The contract is physically delivered and its eligible basket does not equal a cash on-the-run ten-year note, so cash DV01 is not substituted for contract risk. [CBOT ten-year note rulebook](https://www.cmegroup.com/rulebook/CBOT/II/19.pdf)

| Item | Level / amount |
|---|---:|
| Assumed paper entry | 104.234375 |
| Current exact mark | 104.6875 |
| Open gross P&L | **−$453.13** |
| Fixed stop | 105.265625 |
| Remaining mark-to-stop distance | **$578.13** |
| Target | 101.50 |
| Mark-to-target distance | **$3,187.50** |
| Mandatory exit / review | November 20 |

Costs and gap risk are additional. The stop does not guarantee maximum loss.

### Fresh path analysis through November 20

These are scenario judgments, not measured probabilities.

| Scenario | Price path | Gross result from entry | Thesis implication |
|---|---:|---:|---|
| Bond bull / trade bear | 105.265625 stop | −$1,031.25 | Softer inflation or durable duration demand invalidates the short |
| Base | 103.50 | +$734.38 | Restrictive policy persists, but growth prevents a disorderly selloff |
| Bond bear / trade bull | 101.50 target | +$2,734.38 | Inflation and term premium reassert themselves |

The current position is held because remaining downside is bounded by an unchanged thesis stop while the target remains meaningful. It is not added because the overnight rally is adverse, energy is softer, CPI can gap the contract and the available March quote was too thin and asynchronous to establish a reliable roll/carry edge.

## Copper package: corrected size and current payoff

The intended watch package is **two**, not three, December Micro Copper contracts. Two micros represent 5,000 lb.

| Assumption | Amount |
|---|---:|
| Exact reference | 6.7435/lb |
| Tactical stop | 6.50 |
| Base target | 6.96 |
| Raw stop risk | $1,217.50 |
| Buffered risk: 1.25 × raw + $20 costs | **$1,541.88** |
| Net target profit | **$1,062.50** |
| Reward / buffered risk | **0.689R** |

The package fits the normal starter-risk range at about 0.154% of NAV, but fitting is not the same as being attractive. The prior review level of 6.628 produces approximately 2R to the same stop and target. It remains a **review level**, not a standing order: a fall driven by collapsing physical demand would not be an entry.

December MHG last trades November 25. Any later entry would exit or receive a separately approved roll decision by November 13. March MHG traded 6.853 in the reopened session but was thin, and the higher price is a roll hurdle rather than free carry.

## Energy and agriculture

### Energy

January natural gas traded **3.925** while March traded **2.749**. Winter insurance is already expensive, and October 6 CFTC data show managed money heavily net short natural gas. Adequate national storage supports normalization, but January weather risk, South Central salt-storage tightness and crowded positioning prevent a fresh short. [EIA natural-gas storage](https://ir.eia.gov/ngs/ngs.html) · [CFTC natural gas](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/nat_gas_sf.htm)

Micro WTI, Micro Henry Hub, Micro ULSD and Micro RBOB all offer smaller expressions. That solves contract granularity, not thesis uncertainty. A hypothetical two-MCL short at the standard-contract price proxy with a 97.50 stop would risk roughly $2,103 after a 1.25 buffer and modeled costs, about 0.21% of NAV. It remains illustrative because no exact micro quote was used and the evidence is not affirmative. [CME Micro WTI](https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/energy/crude-oil/micro-wti-crude-oil.contractSpecs.html) · [CME micro refined products](https://www.cmegroup.com/articles/2024/refined-for-retail.html)

### Corn

Exact December and March corn traded **480.25** and **494.75**, preserving 14.50 cents of carry. October WASDE raised U.S. corn production 234 million bushels, opening stocks 173 million and ending stocks 282 million to about 1.849 billion. The bearish balance-sheet mechanism is intact. [USDA October WASDE](https://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/wasde1026.pdf)

The entry is not. A new short near 480 with a 510 stop and 460 target offers about 0.65R before costs. October 9 Central Illinois and Iowa cash bids were $4.44 (−36Z) and $4.37 (−43Z), while the futures curve rewarded storage; those are corroborating dated observations rather than new overnight deterioration. [USDA Illinois grain report](https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/AMS_3192.pdf) · [USDA Iowa grain report](https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/AMS_2850.pdf)

Re-underwrite only after a failed rebound near 495–500 with continued weak basis and carry. Do not reopen simply because the fundamental thesis was right.

## Cross-market challenger scan

- **Gold:** exact MGCZ26 at 4,225.9. September ETF inflows support the strategic case, but a meaningful 4,090 stop against a 4,500 scenario target produces only about 1.5R after a conservative buffer and costs. Wait through CPI.
- **Equity indices:** exact MESZ26 at 7,885. Energy relief helps risk appetite; high real yields and CPI risk oppose a clean long. Wait.
- **FX:** no new exact exchange-listed price package displaced the incumbent ideas. Avoid converting an untimestamped spot or NDF proxy into a futures decision.
- **Oil products:** Micro ULSD is the cleanest expression of delivered diesel normalization, but an announcement without delivered barrels cannot defeat low product stocks and winter risk.
- **Grain spreads and oilseeds:** carry remains visible, yet the available spreads offered poor payoff or changed the desired exposure. No package cleared the board.

## Bottom line

The overnight session improved price precision but not expected value. Copper's stronger headline price arrived with weaker demand confirmation and a worse payoff. Oil fell before supply normalization was verified. Corn's bearish thesis remains too fully expressed for a fresh short. The existing Treasury short is the only position whose unchanged stop, target and time exit still justify carrying risk.
