## What changed

The post-auction bond rally did not fail in Asia. The US ten-year cash yield was 5.226%, essentially unchanged from Thursday afternoon's 5.227%, after the strong thirty-year sale absorbed supply. Exact CME December notes were 104'230, or 104.71875 decimal points, at 23:02:34 UTC. That follow-through removes the failed-auction-demand argument for adding to the note short, even though inflation and capital-supply pressure still leave the existing starter with positive prospective economics. Gold responded exactly as the cross-asset mechanism would suggest: softer yields and a softer dollar lifted December gold to $4,200.10 by 03:32 UTC. The move matters because it confirms that duration—not just haven demand—is again driving the metal. It does not create a good entry by itself. From a $4,200 reference, the first objective near $4,259 offers only $59/oz against an illustrative $112/oz stop to $4,088. That is about 0.53 times the stop distance. Even a $4,350 extended objective is only 1.34 times the unbuffered stop distance. Energy's inflation impulse weakened at the margin. China approved about 3.7 million tonnes of October diesel, gasoline and jet-fuel exports after a brief holiday halt. That is a prospective supply release, not evidence that cargoes have already shipped. Meanwhile exact December WTI fell to $89.74 from a $90.75 settlement; March was about $86.80, so the curve still embeds nearby tightness. Diplomacy and Chinese exports favor normalization, but Gulf shut-ins and tanker attacks preserve an upside gap tail. Corn rose modestly before the USDA reset. Exact December corn was 502.25¢ and March 517.25¢ at 03:32 UTC, leaving 15¢ of carry. The 2.095-billion-bushel September 1 stock count and weak recent export sales still support the short, but the pending yield and balance-sheet changes can gap price through the modeled stop. ## Re-underwriting the two positions

### Ten-year note short: hold, no add

At 104.71875, the existing short has an indicative gross loss of $484.38 from the 104.234375 assumed entry. The remaining distance to the 105.265625 stop is $546.88; the distance to the 101.50 target is $3,218.75. A stop is not a guaranteed loss ceiling through a macro gap.

The current variant view is narrower than it was at entry. Governor Waller said inflation remained too high and that more hikes were likely, but he also noted that markets already priced roughly an 85% probability of at least one hike by December and almost 80% probability of at least two by March 2027. Hawkish language is therefore largely priced; persistent inflation, issuance and term premium—not surprise rhetoric—must now carry the short. [Federal Reserve speech](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/speech/waller20261008a.htm)

The revised judgmental tree from 104.71875 is:

- 20%: inflation/issuance pressure resumes, 101.50, **+$3,218.75** gross.
- 40%: persistent inflation with orderly absorption, 103.50, **+$1,218.75** gross.
- 40%: disinflation or a duration squeeze, 106.25, **−$1,531.25** gross.

That is approximately **+$518.75** before costs. The result supports holding one contract, not adding. The next genuine test is Michigan inflation expectations: higher expectations plus a sustained ten-year yield above roughly 5.30% would restore an add discussion; lower expectations with durable yield compression would challenge the hold.

### Corn short: hold, no add

At 502.25¢, the existing short has an indicative gross loss of $87.50 from the 500.50¢ assumed entry. Remaining loss to the 532.50¢ stop is $1,512.50; remaining gain to the 460¢ target is $2,112.50. December-March carry is $750 per standard spread, but that is curve evidence—not guaranteed income for an outright short.

For the holding period through 20 November, the stop-capped judgmental tree is:

- 25%: major supply cut or quality damage, 540¢ terminal but modeled exit at 532.50¢, **−$1,512.50**.
- 50%: carry-in offsets a modest yield cut, 480¢, **+$1,112.50**.
- 25%: demand softens and harvest normalizes, 450¢ terminal but modeled target at 460¢, **+$2,112.50**.

The weighted result is approximately **+$706.25** before costs and report-gap slippage. A roughly two-bushel-per-acre yield reduction would offset much of the 173-million-bushel carry-in surprise, so the short is not a simple harvest bet. It depends on the larger stocks cushion surviving the full demand and supply reset. ## Challenger scan

Gold is the strongest new watch, not the strongest trade. One Micro Gold future represents 10 oz. An illustrative $4,200 entry with a $4,088 stop would risk about $1,415 after the 1.25 buffer and modeled costs, or 0.141% of NAV—inside starter limits. The obstacle is payoff, not sizing. The fresher $4,200.10 observation is the standard contract; the exact micro display was older at $4,168.70, so no micro fill is claimed.

The other liquid challengers did not beat the existing book. Nasdaq and euro futures were rebounding rather than confirming fresh shorts. Standard ULSD exceeded the starter-risk range; the smaller contract lacked a verified execution-quality reference. WTI's medium-term normalization tree is attractive only if physical exports and operational restarts arrive, because the disruption tail can overwhelm a tight stop. Natural gas retains a steep winter premium after the 85 Bcf storage build to 3,500 Bcf, while copper's physical tightness conflicts with high-yield growth risk. ## Bottom line

The overnight signal is coherent: strong auction demand capped yields, and gold rallied. The actionable conclusion is restraint. Keep the small note short because its broader inflation/issuance tree remains positive, but add nothing while duration demand is working. Keep the corn short because stocks and carry still outweigh a modest yield cut, but add nothing before USDA. Gold now has the best mechanism among challengers; at $4,200, it does not yet have the best price.
