# France stress is a bond-spread signal, not a clean euro short

**Research cutoff: 5 October 2026, 06:05 Toronto / 10:05 UTC**
**Four-month horizon: through 4 February 2027**

## Decision summary

French fiscal risk is the strongest new cross-asset development, but the right lesson is not “short the euro at any price.” EUR/USD fell to 1.1160 and France’s ten-year yield rose to 4.9196%, while Germany’s comparable yield was 3.4466%. Those displayed Monday yields imply a 147.3-basis-point spread. Reuters’ report that the spread exceeded 150 basis points refers to Friday, not a fresh Monday breakout. At the same time, eurozone services PMI reached 53.0, the composite reached 53.1 and selling-price pressure accelerated. Fiscal stress argues for a France-specific duration expression; resilient activity and inflation argue against treating it as a simple ECB-easing or euro-short trade. [Reuters European markets](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/european-markets-global-markets-2026-10-05/) · [Reuters eurozone PMI](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/euro-zone-business-growth-hits-over-3-12-year-high-despite-inflation-worries-pmi-2026-10-05/)

The cleanest research expression is short French OAT futures against a DV01-matched long Bund hedge. It remains **Wait**. A fresh OAT futures quote and the deliverable bonds’ cheapest-to-deliver DV01/conversion factors were not verified; one OAT versus one Bund must not be called duration neutral. That missing hedge evidence is economically important, not an execution-formality veto.

The paper portfolio retains its only position: short one December 2026 corn future. The exact ZCZ26 09:45–10:00 UTC bar closed at 501.00 cents per bushel, after a 495.00 session low. **Economic decision: Hold; add zero. Paper implementation: retain one contract and update the mark only. Simulated result: no new transaction; open gross P&L becomes −$25.** The assumed 500.50 entry, 532.50 stop, 460 target and 20 November exit are unchanged.

No new entry clears the bar. November micro-WTI is the strongest conditional challenger, but its rebound from $89.31 to $90.76/$90.78 rejects an immediate short. Gold sizing works but the dollar and term yields oppose the hedge. March wheat over corn remains fundamentally appealing but is too expensive and too exposed to combined corn gap risk.

## What changed since 04:05 UTC

- **France risk intensified, then the euro partially recovered.** EUR/USD traded as low as 1.1160 before rebounding to 1.1208 at 08:44 GMT. France’s ten-year yield was 4.9196%, up about six basis points, while Germany’s was 3.4466%, down about one. Spot FX and cash yields are context, not December futures fills. [Reuters global markets](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/european-markets-global-markets-2026-10-05/)
- **Eurozone activity challenged the easy-policy story.** September services PMI was 53.0 and composite PMI 53.1, with input and output prices accelerating. That is a meaningful counterweight to a low-chasing euro short or broad European-duration long. [Reuters eurozone PMI](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/euro-zone-business-growth-hits-over-3-12-year-high-despite-inflation-worries-pmi-2026-10-05/)
- **UK services also sent a stagflationary mix.** Final services PMI was 52.1, down from 52.5, while selling-price inflation was the strongest since May and employment declined for a twenty-fourth month. This lowers conviction in a simple March SONIA long. [S&P Global UK PMI](https://www.pmi.spglobal.com/Public/Home/PressRelease/)
- **Corn reversed sharply.** ZCZ26 traded from a 495.00 low to a 501.00 completed-bar close. The move cut simulated open gross P&L from +$212.50 at the prior 496.25 mark to −$25. It did not change the assumed entry or create a new fill.
- **Oil rejected its early decline.** MCLX26 recovered to $90.76/$90.78 after trading $89.31. Saudi price cuts and improving exports support a bearish view, but the rebound and continuing shipping attacks make an immediate short poorly timed. [WSJ oil update](https://www.wsj.com/finance/commodities-futures/oil-prices-mixed-amid-signs-of-attacks-around-strait-of-hormuz-g-7-release-plan-179d43e6)
- **Gold rose without rate confirmation.** MGCZ26 was $4,186.70/$4,186.90 while the U.S. ten-year cash yield was 5.2686% and the dollar remained firm. The defensive bid is real; the macro confirmation is not.

## Live paper position: December corn short

| Item | Current treatment |
|---|---:|
| Position | Short 1 ZCZ26 |
| Assumed entry | 500.50 cents/bu |
| Fresh mark | 501.00 cents/bu at 09:59:59 UTC |
| Open gross P&L | −$25.00 before future exit costs |
| Simulated NAV | $1,001,450.25 |
| Target / stop | 460 / 532.50 cents |
| Mandatory exit | 20 November 2026 |
| Decision | **Hold; add zero** |

One contract represents 5,000 bushels, or $50 for each one-cent move. From the 501.00 mark, the 460 target offers $2,050 gross; the 532.50 stop risks $1,575. Applying the 1.25 risk buffer and the conservative $65 all-in cost allowance gives $2,033.75 of forward reserved risk, about 0.203% of NAV. Entry-to-stop risk remains $1,600 raw and $2,065 buffered plus costs, about 0.206% of NAV. Both fit the normal starter range and the 0.50% thesis cap.

The retained 30% target / 45% 490-cent base / 25% stop tree has a 491.625-cent weighted endpoint. From 501.00, that is $468.75 gross expected value and about $403.75 after the $65 allowance. Move ten probability points from target to stop and gross EV falls by $362.50. The edge is positive but modest and highly sensitive; these are analyst judgments, not empirical probabilities.

### Why the short survives

USDA’s 30 September Grain Stocks report put 1 September corn stocks at 2.10 billion bushels, up 35% year over year. September WASDE had 2025/26 ending stocks at 1.922 billion, so the stocks release creates scope for a roughly 178-million-bushel carry-in revision. Delayed December/March prices near 501.25/516.00 imply about 14.75 cents of carry. Cedar Bluffs cash indications showed prompt basis around −42 cents and December around −31 cents. These are bearish inventory, curve and physical signals; they predate this six-hour window and are not presented as new. [USDA Grain Stocks](https://www.nass.usda.gov/Publications/Todays_Reports/reports/grst0926.pdf) · [USDA WASDE](https://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/wasde0926.pdf)

The countercase is material. USDA’s September yield was 178.5 bushels per acre, 2026/27 ending stocks 1.567 billion and calculated stocks/use about 9.68%. World stocks were 272.1 million tonnes. Further yield cuts, strong exports or weather-related harvest disruption can overwhelm the old-crop overhang.

CFTC’s 29 September futures-only report showed managed-money corn net long 381,220 contracts, down 22,877 on the week. That remains crowded-long background, but it is not an automatic timing signal. The 509,501 figure seen in some tables is legacy noncommercial, not managed money. [CFTC agricultural futures](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/ag_sf.htm)

### Invalidation and lifecycle

Exit at 532.50, on a material tightening in the corn balance sheet, or on 20 November, whichever occurs first. Do not count calendar carry as realized P&L. Do not add merely because large stocks remain true; the price recovery and approaching data require new incremental evidence. Stop orders do not cap losses through gaps or exchange limit moves.

## Strongest new macro lead: French OAT versus Bund

The variant view is that the market’s first reaction—sell the euro broadly—mixes two mechanisms. French fiscal risk widens France-specific term premium, while better eurozone services and faster prices can support the euro and lift core European yields. A matched OAT/Bund spread isolates the first mechanism more directly than shorting the currency.

Official Eurex specifications make the size straightforward: one Euro-OAT future is €100,000 nominal, €1,000 per price point and €10 per 0.01 tick. December’s last trading time is 8 December at 12:30 CET, with delivery on 10 December. But the trade is not ready. The current OAT quote section did not produce a verified live price; public values found elsewhere were dated 2 October or older. The hedge ratio must be:

`Bund contracts / OAT contracts = OAT futures CTD DV01 / Bund futures CTD DV01`

Without contemporaneous conversion factors and CTD DV01, a 1:1 package is not demonstrated as neutral. [Eurex Euro-OAT specifications](https://www.eurex.com/ex-en/markets/int/fix/government-bonds/Euro-OAT-Futures-137640)

An outright one-contract short with a one-point stop would risk €1,000 raw. With a 1.25 buffer, illustrative €25 costs and EUR/USD 1.1208, the reserve is about $1,429, or 0.143% of NAV. Whole-contract sizing passes. The missing current price and hedge construction—not size—keep the idea on Wait.

Illustrative outright OAT outcomes relative to a future verified entry `P` are: favorable France-risk escalation at `P−2.00` = +€2,000; moderate continuation at `P−0.50` = +€500; fiscal/ECB relief at `P+1.00` = −€1,000. No probabilities or expected value are assigned before a live entry price and hedge are known.

## Other challengers

### November micro-WTI short — Wait for a failed rebound

The conditional study requires a 15-minute close below $90.30 and a failed retest of $90.30–$90.40, with no newly confirmed net supply outage. A hypothetical $90.30 entry uses a $91.30 stop, a first review at $89.30 and an extension at $87.80. Ten MCL contracts represent 1,000 barrels: $1,000 raw stop risk; $1,330 after the 1.25 buffer and $80 estimated round-trip costs, or 0.133% of NAV.

The judgmental conditional tree—45% at $87.80, 30% at $89.30 and 25% at the buffered stop—would produce about $1,032.50 net expected value. Move ten probability points from the far target to the stop and it falls to $657.50. Those calculations describe a future trigger, not an active order. MCLX26 expires 19 October; any position would exit or roll by 16 October or an earlier broker cutoff.

### March wheat over corn — Wait

Delayed pages showed March wheat around 708.50–709.00 and March corn 516.00, an unsynchronized 192.50–193.00-cent spread. At an illustrative 193-cent entry, 240 produces +$2,350, 210 produces +$850 and a 160 stop loses $1,650 before costs. The fundamental divergence remains: September wheat stocks were down 14% year over year while corn stocks were up 35%.

Implementation is the problem. Current CME daily limits are 45 cents for wheat and 30 cents for corn. Opposing limit moves imply a $3,750 package loss before buffer. Combined with the existing short corn, buffered stress exceeds the $5,007.25 thesis cap. Wait for synchronized quotes, risk room and the 9 October WASDE. ### Gold, rates, equities and copper — Wait

- **Gold:** MGCZ26 at $4,186.70/$4,186.90 is constructive, but four micros to a 4,150 stop reserve about $1,877 after buffer and costs while high yields and a firm dollar oppose the thesis. Size passes; signal quality does not.
- **U.S. duration:** ZNZ26 was 104.390625/104.40625. Soft payrolls support a long, but 5.27% cash ten-year yields show fiscal and term-premium pressure remains. Wait for ISM and a price reclaim.
- **Canada and UK rates:** corrected CORRA economics remain weak near 97.045, while UK PMI’s stronger prices weaken a straightforward SONIA long. No fresh exact contract price improved either case.
- **Equities:** ESZ26 was 7,762.25/7,762.50. A December contract cannot inherit a February target without an explicit exit or roll, and high yields prevent a clean long.
- **Copper:** no decision-grade post-cutoff physical update. China’s holiday limits local confirmation; retain Wait.
- **Soybeans/oilmeal:** delayed November soybeans near 1,289.75 duplicate the harvest-supply theme while tighter stocks and China demand create a meaningful countercase. The closed soybean-oil/meal package remains closed.
- **Mini-VIX:** VXV26 was 17.70/17.75, with the last trade older at 09:43:33 UTC. February VXM remains the relevant four-month hedge but has stale settlement exposure and weak liquidity; no entry.

## Implementation and data limits

The paper book uses an exact 501.00 ZCZ26 completed-bar close for valuation. No entry, add, trim, exit, reverse or roll was assumed. Spot FX, cash sovereign yields and delayed agricultural pages support research only; they are not represented as named-contract fills. OAT/Bund and micro-WTI scenarios are conditional studies, not orders. All results are simulated; no real order was placed.
