# Hormuz conditions raise oil risk, not yet oil edge

**ATG global futures monitor — 4 October 2026, 06:00 Toronto**

Iran has made the political condition for reopening the Strait of Hormuz more explicit. Parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said seven conditions from the June framework remain unmet, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said reopening could occur within seven days if Washington accepts Iran's proposal. Separately, three OPEC+ sources told Reuters that the group had agreed in principle to keep November production targets unchanged. UKMTO also reported a tanker engine-room damaged by an unknown projectile in the strait; the crew was safe and no environmental impact was reported. These developments increase the persistence and incident tails around oil supply. They do **not** establish a new broad closure or quantify incremental lost barrels. [Reuters: Iran conditions](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/iran-says-strait-hormuz-will-not-reopen-until-conditions-are-met-2026-10-04/), [Reuters/OPEC+ syndication](https://ca.marketscreener.com/news/opec-set-to-keep-november-oil-output-targets-steady-sources-say-ce785ddbdc8df12d), [Reuters/UKMTO syndication](https://www.devdiscourse.com/article/international/3986512-tanker-hit-by-unknown-projectile-in-strait-of-hormuz-ukmto-says)

The decision is therefore unchanged but newly re-underwritten: **wait in Micro WTI, hold one short December corn contract and add zero**. There is no new simulated transaction, order or weekend mark. The oil wait is not caused by missing tick precision. Two Micro WTI contracts fit the risk budget; the expected payoff remains too fragile.

Research is current through **4 October 2026 at 06:00 Toronto / 10:00 UTC**. The fresh-information window begins at the preceding 00:00 Toronto cutoff. Monitored CL, MCL, MGC and grain references retain their actual 2 October observation dates. Some newer CME products trade around the clock, but they are not substituted for the named contracts reviewed here.

## What changed since midnight

| Time (UTC) | New evidence | What it changes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 07:31 | Three Reuters sources said OPEC+ agreed in principle to hold November targets. | Confirms the expected direction and reduces quota-surprise risk. It is not yet the final communiqué or an actual production outcome. |
| 07:52 publication | UKMTO reported tanker engine-room damage from an unknown projectile in Hormuz; crew safe, no environmental impact. | Raises route and insurance risk, but the incident time and any lasting throughput effect were not established. |
| 07:59 | Qalibaf said Hormuz will not reopen until seven conditions are met. | Weakens immediate-reopening hopes. It is a policy statement, not a new closure or a barrel-loss estimate. |

OPEC's public release list still did not show a final 4 October decision at the cutoff. Formal language, compensation plans and actual production remain outstanding. [OPEC press releases](https://www.opec.org/press-releases.html)

Several items remain important context rather than fresh discoveries. Petroecuador's SOTE force-majeure notice and six-day repair target were published on 3 October; the operator's path implies a restart around 9 October, but the reviewed sources did not quantify lost barrels. A reported Iraqi two-million-barrel VLCC voyage through Hormuz proves one passage, not a two-million-barrel-per-day flow or a general reopening. Saudi authorities and Aramco still had not quantified damage or throughput loss from the Riyadh incident. [Petroecuador/SOTE reporting](https://www.primicias.ec/economia/operaciones-sote-suspension-incendio-estacion-baeza-investigacion-134076/), [Reuters: Iraqi transit](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/iraq-says-it-transported-2-million-barrels-crude-through-strait-hormuz-2026-10-03/), [Reuters: Riyadh facility](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/fire-smoke-seen-near-aramco-facility-riyadh-witness-says-2026-10-03/)

The G7 stock-release framework also remains dated context. Its 2 October statement says implementation begins immediately over four months with substantial diesel volumes in the first 20 days, but it ties the action to March commitments after accounting for deliveries already made. The 100-million-barrel figure should not be mechanically added to the earlier 400-million-barrel pledge. ## Decision board

| Market and expression | Dated reference | Decision | Why now |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **December corn, short 1 ZCZ26** | Ledger mark 497.25¢ at 14:19 Toronto on 2 Oct; separate USDA AMS settlement 497.75¢ | **Hold; add zero** | The stocks and carry thesis survives, but remaining reward versus the fixed stop has narrowed. Monday demand and harvest data matter more than a second contract. |
| **December Micro WTI, potential +2 MCLZ26** | CLZ26 proxy $89.43 and CLF27 $87.82 at 16:59 Toronto on 2 Oct | **Wait for final OPEC+ language and reopened curve** | Iran's conditions and the tanker incident lift the bull tail, but no incremental outage is quantified and the modeled edge is only $96 net. |
| **December Micro Gold** | MGCZ26 $4,171.90; settlement $4,162.30 on 2 Oct | **Wait** | Weak jobs reduced hike risk, but gold and duration failed to hold their initial rally; the bear tail and long positioning remain large. |
| **December 10-year Treasury note** | TYZ26 104.375; settlement 104.359 on 2 Oct | **Wait for durable 105-08 reclaim** | Payrolls support duration, but inflation and term premium dominated Friday. A December contract cannot inherit a February payoff without a roll plan. |
| **December Micro S&P 500, potential +2 MESZ26** | ESZ26 proxy 7,776.50; settlement 7,777.25 on 2 Oct | **Wait** | The position fits at a defined stop, but bond confirmation is absent and the four-month scenario exceeds the December lifecycle. |
| **December Micro EUR/USD, potential short 5 M6EZ26** | ECZ26 proxy 1.1290; settlement 1.1285 on 2 Oct | **Wait** | Europe retains energy and fiscal pressure, but weak U.S. labor reduces divergence and existing euro shorts increase squeeze risk. |
| **December Micro Copper, potential long 3 MHGZ26** | HGZ26 proxy $6.5790/lb on 2 Oct | **Wait until China reopens 8 Oct** | A 30/40/30 tree at $7.15/$6.65/$5.80 weights to $6.545 before costs—below the reference price. |
| **Soy oil/meal, wheat, obsolete March MES** | Carried context only | **Avoid / context** | The oil/meal package is closed; wheat lacks positive March-specific underwriting; the old March equity setup is superseded by the December watch. |

Standard-contract references are labeled proxies where the corresponding micro was not observed. They share expiry and units but are not represented as observed micro executions. ## Oil: the risk distribution moved more than the mean

Friday's carried December WTI proxy was $89.43 and January was $87.82, a $1.61 backwardation. That curve priced prompt scarcity before the latest Sunday statements. The new evidence raises the probability that disruption persists, but the OPEC+ in-principle hold was already expected, the G7 framework adds supply, selective transits continue and the Ecuador operator has a dated repair target.

ATG's revised gap-inclusive terminal tree for **two** December Micro WTI contracts uses 28% at $98, 44% at $90 and 28% at $82 by 13 November. The weighted price is exactly $90.00:

`0.28 × 98 + 0.44 × 90 + 0.28 × 82 = 90.00`

At the $89.43 proxy, two 100-barrel micros produce **+$114 gross and +$96 after $18 modeled round-trip friction**. A $1 worse assumed entry changes expected net P&L to **−$104**. More importantly, moving only three probability points from the $98 bull outcome to the $82 bear outcome lowers the weighted terminal price by $0.48; across 200 barrels that removes the entire $96 net edge. These are analyst probabilities, not options-implied probabilities, and the $82 endpoint is not a promise that a stop contains a gap.

The sizing itself works. From $89.43 to an illustrative $82 stop, two micros risk $1,486 raw and about **$1,875.50** after the 1.25 adverse-loss buffer and modeled costs, or roughly 0.187% of current NAV. That sits inside the normal 0.10%–0.25% starter band. The economic decision is still Wait because the expected value is small relative to a plausible opening gap and a minor probability error.

A long becomes more compelling if repeated traffic data show a broad decline, Saudi or Ecuador throughput loss is quantified, the SOTE repair date slips, or the reopened curve tightens without an equivalent price jump. It weakens if diplomacy advances, safe transits broaden, the SOTE restarts on schedule and announced stock releases reach the market. MCLZ26 must be exited by 13 November under this study, before its carried 19 November last-trade date; the four-month thesis cannot be assigned automatically to December.

## Corn: hold the winner, do not confuse carry with profit

The paper book remains short one ZCZ26 from an assumed-nearest 500.50¢ entry. The actual ledger mark is 497.25¢, creating **$162.50 open gross P&L**. A separate USDA AMS final settlement put December at 497.75¢ and March at 511.50¢, a 13.75¢ contango worth $687.50 across one standard contract. That spread signals storage abundance and time value. It is not booked income because the portfolio owns only the outright December short and plans to exit by 20 November rather than roll it. [USDA AMS final grain settlements](https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_2887.pdf)

From the 497.75¢ settlement, a 30%/45%/25% tree at 460/490/532.50¢ gives $306.25 incremental gross and **$290.25 after one adverse exit tick and commission**. Target reward is $1,887.50 versus $1,737.50 raw distance back to the fixed stop, only 1.09 times. Shifting ten probability points from target to stop makes expected net P&L about −$72.25. This is why the position remains a Hold rather than an Add even though a second contract fits the absolute 0.50% thesis cap.

Official futures-only positioning on 29 September showed corn managed money 439,843 long and 58,623 short, or **+381,220 net**, down 22,877 on the week. The long remains crowded enough to permit liquidation, but the data predate the 30 September stocks shock and cannot describe weekend flows. [CFTC agriculture](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/ag_sf.htm)

Demand is the counter-case. Fuel-alcohol use rose 4.0% year over year, Mexico bought additional corn, and harvest progress had only matched the five-year average. Monday export inspections and Crop Progress will test whether demand and field conditions absorb the inventory cushion. The stop remains 532.50¢, the target 460¢ and the mandatory exit 20 November. No add trigger is staged.

## Cross-asset challengers

Gold is the closest defensive challenger. One MGC is 10 ounces, roughly $41,719 of notional at the carried quote. The corrected 25%/45%/30% tree at $4,700/$4,300/$3,800 weights to $4,250 and gives about $772 net before lifecycle complications, but moving ten probability points from bull to bear turns that value negative. A newer one-ounce gold future offers smaller sizing and trades 24/7, yet a smaller contract does not repair conflicting rates and growth evidence or create a December-to-February exit plan. [CME one-ounce gold FAQ](https://www.cmegroup.com/articles/faqs/faq-1-oz-gold-futures.html)

Duration also remains two-sided. Friday cash yields ended near 5.281% for ten years and 4.827% for two years, a calculated 45.4-basis-point 2s10s slope. Legacy noncommercial ten-year Treasury positioning was deeply net short, but basis hedges prevent treating the whole balance as a simple directional bet. A one-contract long at 105-08 with 103-24 stop would risk about $1,913.25 after buffer and costs; the missing element is lifecycle-matched expected value, not capacity. [CFTC financial futures](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/deacbtsf.htm)

Two MES at a hypothetical 7,730 entry and 7,590 stop risk $1,400 raw and approximately **$1,769** after the buffer and modeled $19 round-trip friction. Five M6E at 1.1350 with a 1.1550 stop risk about $1,610 after buffer and costs. Both fit. Neither has sufficient cross-asset confirmation to enter now. Exact micro quotes are not a universal veto; same-expiry standard proxies can support a disclosed assumed-nearest paper decision when the economics are affirmative.

## Simulated portfolio and controls

Portfolio revision 57 is unchanged. Cash is **$1,001,475.25**, open gross corn P&L is **+$162.50**, and NAV is **$1,001,637.75** as of the last actual valuation on 2 October at 22:06:12 UTC. Gross exposure is $24,862.50 and modeled margin reserve is $5,000. Realized gross P&L remains $1,611.75 and cumulative commissions $136.50. No capital was reset and no real order was placed.

The corn ledger's $2,019.50 open-risk field is its historical entry-risk floor, not a fresh mark-to-stop number. From the separate 497.75¢ settlement, current buffered stop risk is about $2,187.88; from the actual 497.25¢ ledger mark it is about $2,219.13. Both remain inside the 0.50% thesis ceiling, but the thin prospective edge rejects an addition.

Energy, gold, duration and equity risk can all lose together if inflation and term premium reprice higher. A corn short adds a different but still inflation-sensitive channel through weather, exports and biofuel demand. Stops are decision controls, not guarantees against gaps. Margin estimates are conservative paper reserves rather than exchange initial-margin claims.

Unscheduled priorities are Hormuz traffic breadth, details of the tanker incident, official Saudi throughput facts, the Ecuador SOTE repair path, actual stock-release implementation and harvest weather. The research horizon remains the carried **2 February 2027** endpoint; December contracts require earlier exits or separately priced rolls.
