# A winning corn short is now a weaker new trade

**Research cutoff: October 3, 2026, 12:00 a.m. Toronto.** Futures were closed throughout this review. Every price below retains its actual Friday observation time or settlement date; none is represented as a Saturday quote, executable bid or offer. The four-month research horizon remains February 2, 2027, but December contracts require earlier exit or roll decisions.

## Decision summary

The live simulated book remains short one `ZCZ26`. No market reopened and no affirmative entry, add, trim, exit or reversal was justified, so **no assumed paper fill or new mark was recorded**. The ledger stays at revision 57 with the 497.25-cent timestamped Friday mark: cash **$1,001,475.25**, indicative NAV **$1,001,637.75**, open gross P&L **+$162.50**, gross exposure **$24,862.50**, modeled margin reserve **$5,000** and ledger open risk **$2,019.50**. The ledger risk includes the established buffer and modeled costs; it is not the plain distance from current mark to stop. These are simulated figures, not a broker statement.

## 1. Corn: better P&L, worse forward asymmetry

The short was assumed entered at **500.50¢/bu**. Its fixed 460¢ target initially offered 40.50¢, or $2,025 per contract, against 32.00¢, or $1,600, to the 532.50¢ stop. That was **1.27x** raw target reward to stop risk.

At Friday's separate **497.75¢** USDA AMS final settlement, the remaining target distance was 37.75¢, or $1,887.50, while the unchanged stop was now 34.75¢ away, or $1,737.50. Forward target/stop therefore fell to **1.09x**. This is the useful lesson: a short can be profitable while becoming less attractive as a new trade, because some downside has already been captured and the stop has not moved. [USDA AMS final grain report](https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_2887.pdf)

| November 20 outcome | Analyst weight | Exit | Forward gross P&L from 497.75¢ |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Harvest and long liquidation continue | 30% | 460.00¢ | +$1,887.50 |
| Demand absorbs part of the surplus | 45% | 490.00¢ | +$387.50 |
| Weather or demand squeeze; stop | 25% | 532.50¢ | -$1,737.50 |

The weighted forward result is **+$306.25 gross**, or about **+$290.25 net** after one adverse exit tick and commission. These probabilities are judgments, not measured frequencies. Shift only ten percentage points from the target case to the stop case and the estimated net result becomes **-$72.25**. The edge survives the base assumptions but is not robust enough to add.

One extra standard contract fits the 0.50% thesis ceiling mechanically: prior sizing put combined modeled thesis risk near $4,226.50, about 0.42% of NAV. Capacity is not conviction. Adding would concentrate more risk in a payoff that has become highly weight-sensitive after a 5.8% weekly decline. With only one contract held, a trim would be a full exit. **Hold one; add zero.**

### Why the thesis still survives

USDA measured **2.10 billion bushels** of September 1 corn stocks, 35% above a year earlier; on-farm stocks were 787 million and off-farm stocks 1.31 billion. June–August disappearance was 3.20 billion bushels versus 3.09 billion a year earlier. The larger starting cushion is bearish, while the improved disappearance rate is meaningful counterevidence rather than noise. [USDA Grain Stocks](https://www.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/2026/09-30-2026.php)

Friday's December settlement of 497.75¢ and March settlement of 511.50¢ left **13.75¢ of carry**. That remains a storage incentive and a supply signal, but it is not a guaranteed return to an outright short. Managed money was still net long **377,850 corn futures-and-options contracts** on September 29 after cutting net length by 36,587 in one week. The positioning snapshot predates the September 30 stocks shock, so post-shock liquidation is unknown. [CFTC agriculture futures and options](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/options/ag_sof.htm)

The strongest disconfirming evidence is demand and energy transmission. Fuel-alcohol use was higher year over year, Mexico bought more U.S. corn, and a renewed oil shock can improve ethanol economics. Crop Progress on September 28 put harvest at 18%, exactly the five-year average, with 57% rated good/excellent. That does not describe a harvest crisis. Monday's export inspections and harvest update are the next direct tests.

The stop remains 532.50¢, the target 460¢ and the mandatory exit November 20. A collapse in carry paired with sustained export and cash-basis strength would justify an earlier exit. Over the four-month horizon, any view beyond December requires a separately priced March contract and explicit roll; this report assumes no free carry.

## 2. The late oil headline changes gap risk, not fair value

Reuters published at 11:31 p.m. UTC that a crude tanker had been struck by an unknown projectile about four nautical miles east of Oman. All crew were reported safe and no environmental impact was reported. The underlying incident time was not established in the accessible report, and there was no confirmed supply loss. Treat this as a newly available weekend-risk report—not as proof of a new physical outage or an oil price move. [Reuters tanker report](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/crude-oil-tanker-struck-by-unknown-projectile-off-oman-ukmto-says-2026-10-02/)

The last named December WTI reference remains Friday's **$89.43/bbl** standard-contract proxy; January was **$87.82**, leaving **$1.61 of backwardation**. The curve still priced nearby scarcity, although less than Thursday. A separate Reuters market report placed the front-month WTI settlement at $91.11; that is a different contract and should not be substituted for December.

The existing 25/40/35 analyst outcomes of $98/$90/$82 weight to $89.20 for December—below the $89.43 proxy before costs. Two micro WTI contracts fit the paper risk budget, but the expected value is negative and the weekend distribution is wider: OPEC+ policy, coordinated stock releases and tanker risk pull in opposite directions. **Remain flat until Sunday price discovery produces a new curve.**

## 3. Weak payrolls still lack cross-asset confirmation

Friday's U.S. employment report showed payrolls up 29,000, unemployment at 4.2%, hourly earnings up 0.1% month over month and 3.0% year over year, with July–August payrolls revised down by 60,000 combined. That weakens the immediate Fed-hike case. It did not produce a durable rally in Treasury or gold futures. [BLS employment report](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm)

The Federal Reserve's H.15 release dated October 2 only contains Treasury observations through October 1; it must not be labeled as an October 2 cash close. Friday's named futures are cleaner for this review: `TYZ26` was 104.375, `MGCZ26` $4,171.90 and standard `ESZ26` 7,776.50 at 4:59 p.m. Toronto. Bonds and gold had surrendered the payroll rally while equities retained Fed-pause relief.

That split does not support a clean duration long, gold long or broad equity chase. It also does not justify adding to the already crowded leveraged Treasury short. The best macro expressions remain conditional:

- **Treasuries:** wait for `TYZ26` to reclaim and hold 105-08 with current cheapest-to-deliver risk evidence.
- **Micro S&P:** two `MESZ26` contracts fit near a 7,730 retest with a 7,590 stop, but the trigger has not occurred and the December lifecycle needs a separate exit plan.
- **Micro euro:** five `M6EZ26` contracts fit a 1.1350 entry and 1.1550 stop, but weak U.S. labor offsets European fiscal and energy pressure; use a reopened quote and December-compatible scenario tree.
- **Micro gold:** one `MGC` fits, but failed same-session rate confirmation, large speculative length and contango keep the trade on Wait.

## 4. Challenger scan

| Sleeve | Best expression reviewed | Decision | Why it does not displace corn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rates | Long `TYZ26` after a 105-08 reclaim | Wait | Payroll rally failed; positioning is already extremely short |
| FX | Short five `M6EZ26` near 1.1350 | Wait | U.S. labor softness weakens dollar divergence; December tree needs repricing |
| Equity index | Long two `MESZ26` on 7,730 support | Wait | Equity relief lacked duration confirmation; trigger not observed |
| Energy | Two `MCLZ26` after OPEC+ | Wait | Negative base EV at Friday proxy and two-sided weekend gap risk |
| Precious metals | Long one `MGCZ26` | Wait | Failed payroll follow-through, crowded longs and contango |
| Industrial metals | Long three `MHGZ26` | Wait | China is closed; Friday standard-copper proxy $6.5790 exceeded the scenario mean |
| Wheat | March micro-wheat long | Wait | December settled 683.00¢, but current March curve and a fresh export trigger are missing |
| Oilseeds | Reopen micro oil/meal relative value | Remain flat | No exact current package quote or positive re-entry tree |

None offers better supported forward asymmetry at a feasible whole-contract size. That is not a permanent veto: reopened markets, OPEC+ and Monday services/agriculture data can change the ranking.

## Next 72 hours

- **Sunday, October 4 — OPEC+ and JMMC, time unconfirmed.** Reuters sources expected unchanged November targets. Physical exports, stock-release implementation and any escalation around Oman matter more than the nominal headline alone. ## Method and limitations

Scenario weights and price bands are analyst judgments, not calibrated probabilities. Settlement and delayed references are dated research inputs, not executable prices. Standard `CL`, `ES`, `EC` and `HG` are labeled same-expiry proxies for smaller contracts and are never represented as observed micro prices. No weekend futures price is invented. The Oman report raises gap risk but does not establish a supply outage. Paper positions and fills are simulations; stops can gap, modeled reserves are conservative controls, and this is research rather than investment advice.
