# Corn demand improved; the short still earns its place—but not a second contract

**Research cutoff: October 1, 2026, 18:10 Toronto (22:10 UTC).** This ordinary closing edition reviews the remaining December corn short, every current watchlist thesis and the liquid rates, FX, equity-index, energy, metals and agricultural challenger set. The four-month research horizon remains January 30, 2027; the active corn contract must be exited earlier.

## Closing decision

August ethanol demand was better than a year ago, and December corn recovered to a 502.25-cent settlement. That is meaningful counterevidence to adding. It is not enough to overturn the September stock-surplus thesis: the contract remains in storage carry, weekly export sales were weak and the larger stock cushion is still the dominant balance-sheet change.

**Economic decision: Hold short one December 2026 corn contract; add zero.** Keep the 532.50-cent stop, 460-cent target and November 20 mandatory exit.

**Paper implementation:** No transaction was assumed. Revision 53 simply marks the existing short at the exact ZCZ26 October 1 settlement of 502.25 cents. No real order was placed.

| Market | Decision | Implementation | Closing reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| December 2026 corn | **Hold −1 ZCZ26; no add** | Existing assumed entry 500.50¢; stop 532.50¢; target 460.00¢; exit by November 20 | Exact ZCZ26 settlement 502.25¢ |
| December Micro Euro | **Wait; remain flat** | The eight-contract short exited at midday and stays closed | ECZ26 standard-contract proxy 1.1277 at 16:59 Toronto; not an M6E quote |
| Micro WTI | **Wait; do not chase** | No position or order | CLX26 settlement $92.87 as a same-month standard proxy |
| Treasury / equity index | **Wait through payrolls** | No position or order | ZNZ26 104.609375 and ESZ26 7,725.00 at 17:00 Toronto |

## What changed after 12:06 Toronto

### Domestic corn demand improved

USDA reported **477.732 million bushels** of corn used for fuel alcohol in August. That was 0.33% above July and 4.0% above August 2025. Total August corn consumption was 528 million bushels, also up 4% year over year. No reliable consensus was available, so this edition does not describe the release as a beat or miss. [USDA Grain Crushings report](https://esmis.nal.usda.gov/sites/default/release-files/796092/cagc1026.txt).

The result matters because stronger grind can absorb part of the 173-million-bushel stock cushion calculated from the September Grain Stocks report. It does not erase that cushion by itself. Weekly 2026/27 corn export sales were only 536,000 tonnes, while the delayed closing curve still showed December around 14 cents below March. [USDA weekly export-sales highlights](https://apps.fas.usda.gov/esrqs/StaticReports/WeeklyHighlightsReport.pdf) and [MarketWatch December corn](https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/future/cz26).

Exact ZCZ26 settled **502.25¢** on October 1, versus 500.75¢ on September 30. Its 495.00–505.00 range did not touch the stop or target. The delayed 502.00 last-trade tile at 13:19 CDT is separate from the explicitly labeled 502.25 settlement. Volume was 326,650 and displayed open interest 919,540. [Exact contract page](https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/future/cz26).

### The Fed changed timing, not the inflation problem

Vice Chair Philip Jefferson said the next policy judgment may require more time and data, while retaining upside inflation concern. The message reduced the urgency of an October hike; it did not turn the policy outlook into easing. Treasuries jumped after the speech, then surrendered part of the move. [Federal Reserve speech](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/speech/jefferson20261001a.htm) and [Reuters closing recap](https://www.reuters.com/business/dow-futures-hit-three-month-low-yields-surge-micron-earnings-offer-support-2026-10-01/).

From 12:06 to 17:00 Toronto, ESZ26 rose from 7,691.75 to 7,725.00 and NQZ26 from 30,604.75 to 30,771.25. ZNZ26 finished only half a 32nd above its midday level after reaching 104.859375 around the speech. The afternoon improved risk tone, but neither a duration long nor an equity short has a clean pre-payroll payoff.

### Energy added geopolitical premium

November WTI settled **$92.87**, up $2.45, while December Brent settled **$102.31**, up $4.28. The late extension followed reporting of an additional U.S. carrier deployment, adding to the morning China fuel-export suspension. The “more than $4” move belongs to Brent, not WTI. [Reuters oil close](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/oil-prices-barely-changed-investors-assess-us-iran-peace-talks-gulf-exports-2026-10-01/).

Prompt product tightness is real: HOX26 settled $4.6420 per gallon and the curve remained backwardated. But crude is an imperfect expression of diesel scarcity, export-policy responses can separate domestic from overseas prices, and weekend military or OPEC headlines can reverse the premium. A current Micro WTI entry does not clear the payoff test.

## December corn: current-price underwriting

The larger September 1 stock count remains the essential bearish evidence. USDA measured 2.095057 billion bushels, roughly 173 million above the September WASDE beginning-stock assumption. Holding other September assumptions constant, that bridge lifts projected ending stocks from 1.567 billion to roughly 1.740 billion bushels and stocks/use from 9.7% to about 10.8%. This is an analytical bridge, not a new USDA forecast. [USDA Grain Stocks briefing](https://data.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/Executive_Briefings/2026/09-30-2026.pdf) and [September WASDE](https://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/wasde0926.pdf).

The strongest disconfirming evidence is now the combination of stronger ethanol grind, wet-harvest quality risk and a price rebound from 495 cents. Those facts justify keeping the starter at one contract even though a second contract would fit the numeric thesis ceiling.

### Corrected November 20 scenario tree

The midday edition overstated this tree's expected payoff. Its displayed 35%/40%/25% weights and 460/490/532.50 outcomes implied **+$406.25 gross from 498.25**, not +$653. This closing edition corrects the arithmetic without changing any transaction or historical P&L.

| November 20 outcome | Weight | ZCZ26 | Incremental P/L from 502.25¢ |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Stock surplus and harvest pressure persist | 35% | 460.00¢ | +$2,112.50 |
| Slow normalization | 40% | 490.00¢ | +$612.50 |
| Crop loss or demand squeeze | 25% | 532.50¢ | −$1,512.50 |

The weighted terminal price is 490.125 cents. Expected incremental value is **+$606.25 gross** and approximately **+$590.25** after one adverse exit tick and $3.50 commission. Moving ten probability points from the target branch to the stop branch reduces net value to roughly +$227.75; a 16.3-point transfer eliminates it. The probabilities are analyst judgments, not measured win rates.

From the current mark, target reward is $2,112.50 and raw stop loss is $1,512.50, a 1.40× ratio. The 1.25-buffered current-mark loss plus one exit tick and commission is about $1,906.63. The ledger retains its original entry-based $2,019.50 risk convention. A gap ten cents beyond the stop adds another $500; neither the stop nor the buffer guarantees a loss ceiling.

**Why not add:** stronger grind reduces confidence, the contract recovered above $5, and harvest-quality uncertainty can shrink usable supply. A hypothetical second short near 502 cents would keep combined entry-convention risk near 0.39% of NAV—inside the 0.50% thesis cap—so the rejection is economic, not mechanical.

## Flat euro: the exit remains final

The December Micro Euro paper short closed at midday at an assumed 1.1259, using the exact delayed 1.1258 micro quote plus one adverse tick. The simulated trade realized $1,630 gross and **$1,574 net** after entry and exit commissions. It is not rebooked in this edition.

Standard December Euro FX last traded **1.1277** at 16:59 Toronto and settled 1.1268, with a 1.1249–1.1371 range. This is a same-expiry standard-contract proxy—not an observed M6E quote. March traded at a 46-pip premium to December. [MarketWatch December Euro FX](https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/future/ecz26).

Jefferson's timing message weakened the immediate U.S. rate-differential catalyst. The structural Europe/energy and fiscal-fragmentation case remains bearish, but option skew was already defensive and the euro retraced after the exit. **Wait for payrolls.** A future short requires either a failed rebound toward 1.14 with renewed U.S. yield support, or a held break below 1.1249 alongside worsening European evidence. Sustained recovery above 1.14 with narrowing rate differentials or material energy/fiscal relief invalidates that short setup.

## Challenger scan

| Contract | Closing evidence | Four-month implication | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro WTI via CLX26 | $92.87 settlement; supply-shock premium expanded | Bullish mechanism, poor current entry and large weekend gap risk | **Wait** |
| HOX26 | $4.6420 settlement; prompt product tightness | Best physical scarcity case, but standard size and export-policy basis risk are unattractive | **Avoid entry** |
| NGX26 | $2.967 settlement; December premium over November | Storage and seasonal uncertainty conflict near the lows | **Wait** |
| GCZ26 | $4,202.30 settlement; late yield reversal helped | Defensive demand versus high real yields and payroll risk | **Wait** |
| HGZ26 | $6.5380 settlement; China holiday limits new physical evidence | No clean inventory/tariff-adjusted edge | **Wait** |
| ZNZ26 | 104.609375 at 17:00; post-speech spike faded | October hold is more priced, December remains live | **Wait** |
| MESZ26 via ESZ26 | 7,725.00 at 17:00; equities recovered | Neither long nor short has robust pre-payroll asymmetry | **Wait** |
| ZSX26 soybeans | 1,284.00¢ settlement; August oil stocks tightened | Correlated harvest short has stronger physical objections than corn | **Avoid short** |
| ZWZ26 wheat | 682.75¢ settlement | Tighter supply context does not support reviving the old short | **Remain flat** |

For Micro WTI, a subjective 30%/45%/25% tree at $98/$91/$86 from the $92.87 standard-contract proxy produces about **−$102 gross** on one 100-barrel micro before costs. Reassess only after a supported pullback near $90.40 with firm product spreads or a sustained break above the $93.68 session high while export restraint persists.

USDA also reported August soybean crush of 210 million bushels, down from 222 million in July but above 198 million a year earlier. Combined crude and refined soybean-oil stocks were about 1.696 billion pounds, down 13.6% from July. That tightness makes soybeans an inferior substitute short. [USDA Fats and Oils report](https://esmis.nal.usda.gov/sites/default/release-files/796091/cafo1026.txt).

## Paper portfolio after the closing mark

Revision 53 contains one open simulated position: short one ZCZ26. Cash is **$1,001,475.25**; corn gross open P/L is **−$87.50**; indicative NAV is **$1,001,387.75**. Gross exposure is $25,112.50, modeled margin reserve $5,000 and ledger open risk $2,019.50. Closed-trade net P/L remains $1,478.75.

All amounts are simulated. Assumed paper fills are not exchange executions, and no real or client money is involved.

## Source and model note

Market prices are dated delayed closes, settlements or explicitly labeled proxies; they are not executable depth. Scenario probabilities are judgments. Exact M6EZ26 was unavailable at the close, so ECZ26 is used only as a same-expiry research proxy. The current corn settlement is exact-contract. The four-month outlook is unchanged, but contract-specific exits remain shorter.
