# The euro short is cleaner; strong soybean inspections cap the oil/meal edge

**Research cutoff:** September 28, 2026, 12:05 p.m. Toronto
**Review:** North American morning; changes since 6:10 a.m. Toronto
**Economic decision:** Hold −8 December Micro Euro futures and the +3 March Micro Soybean Oil / −3 March Micro Soybean Meal package. Do not add, trim, exit or enter a new position.

The two open positions still have positive expected value, but they no longer deserve equal conviction.

The exact December Micro Euro contract fell to **1.1402** at 11:53 a.m. Toronto, another 12 pips in favor of the short since the morning mark. Its remaining target-to-stop payoff is about **1.70×**, and a fresh scenario tree retains roughly **$620 of gross forward expected value**.

The soybean-oil/meal basket moved the other way. Synchronized March standard-contract proxies marked oil at **67.76¢/lb** and meal at **$360.10/short ton** at 11:59 a.m. Toronto. The package remains profitable, but its target-to-stop payoff is now only about **0.99×** from current marks. Strong U.S. soybean export inspections and firm processor basis improve the countercase to the short-meal leg. The package remains a Hold, but its edge is too fragile to add before September 30 USDA reports.

No real orders were placed. This run records refreshed simulated marks only; there are **no new assumed fills**.

## Portfolio and decisions

| Paper exposure | Current reference | Gross open P&L | Decision |
|---|---:|---:|---|
| −8 December Micro Euro `M6EZ26` | **1.1402 exact delayed** | **+$200.00** | **Hold; no add** |
| +3 March Micro Soybean Oil / −3 March Micro Soybean Meal | **67.76¢ / $360.10** synchronized standard proxies | **+$143.40** | **Hold; no add** |

Paper NAV is **$999,881.15**, cash is **$999,537.75**, gross open P&L is **+$343.40**, and cumulative net P&L is **−$118.85**. The book has two positions, no pending orders and $23,000 of conservative modeled margin reserve. Ledger open risk remains approximately **0.31% of NAV**.

The oil and meal observations are same-month standard-contract proxies in identical quoted units. They are not represented as micro-contract executions. Exact micro last trades existed before the cutoff, but were stale and asynchronous; the synchronized standard closes provide the more coherent economic mark.

## 1. Euro: the cleaner open trade, not an add

Exact delayed `M6EZ26` was **1.1402** at 11:53 a.m. Toronto, versus 1.1414 at the 6:10 a.m. review and a 1.1422 assumed entry. Its session range was 1.1390–1.1428, with displayed volume 9,572 and open interest 16,918. Neither the 1.1550 stop nor the 1.1150 target was touched through the observation. [Exact M6EZ26 quote](https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/futures/M6EZ26)

The mechanism is relative resilience, not ECB easing. The Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75%–4.00% on September 16, while the ECB raised its deposit rate to 2.50% on September 10. Both central banks are restrictive; the dollar case depends on the larger U.S. rate advantage, stronger U.S. demand and Europe's greater exposure to expensive imported energy. [Federal Reserve](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20260916a.htm), [ECB](https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/pr/date/2026/html/ecb.mp260910~314e508016.en.html)

Substantial additional Fed tightening is already priced. Morning reporting put the probability of another October increase near 65%, so the short is a continuation trade rather than a hidden-policy surprise. ### Payoff and sensitivity

For eight micro contracts, every one pip is $10.

| Scenario through the November 30 exit | Weight | M6E level | Gross P&L from 1.1402 |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Persistent energy shock / U.S. resilience | 30% | 1.1150 | **+$2,520** |
| Mixed data / limited divergence | 45% | 1.1350 | **+$520** |
| Energy normalization / dollar reversal | 25% | 1.1550 | **−$1,480** |

The probability-weighted result is approximately **+$620 gross** before future costs. Shifting ten percentage points from the favorable to the adverse case cuts expected value by $400 but leaves it positive.

The remaining reward to 1.1150 is $2,520 against $1,480 of mark-to-stop loss, or **1.70×**. That is still acceptable for the existing position, but less attractive than the original 2.13×. The 1.1550 stop, 1.1150 target and November 30 mandatory exit remain unchanged.

March Micro Euro was about 47 pips above December in asynchronous observations. That is useful carry context, not a synchronized executable spread or a separate guaranteed gain.

**Decision: Hold −8 `M6EZ26`; no add.** An energy détente, ECB firmness or a crowded-dollar reversal remains the principal invalidation path.

## 2. Soybean oil over meal: intact mechanism, thinner edge

The current package is long three March 2027 Micro Soybean Oil contracts at 68.28¢ and short three March 2027 Micro Soybean Meal contracts at $368.00.

Synchronized 11:59 a.m. Toronto standard-contract proxies were **67.76¢ oil** and **$360.10 meal**. They imply:

`gross P&L = 3 × 60 × (67.76 − 68.28) − 3 × 10 × (360.10 − 368.00) = +$143.40`.

The package gave back **$37.80** since the 6:10 a.m. marks because oil weakened more than meal. Its quoted-unit ratio is **0.188170**, between the 0.169005 stop and 0.208696 target. Synchronized bars observed after the morning cutoff did not breach either threshold.

### The new counterevidence

USDA export inspections for the week ended September 24 showed **1.153 million tonnes of soybeans**, up about 50% from the revised prior week and nearly 89% from a year earlier. China accounted for roughly 70% of the weekly total. Inspections are shipments rather than new sales, and they do not directly measure meal demand, but they contradict a simple “Chinese demand disappeared” narrative. [USDA export inspections](https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/wa_gr101.txt)

That matters because the short-meal leg needs additional crush supply to outrun demand. September WASDE still supports the mechanism: U.S. soybean crush is projected at 2.780 billion bushels, soybean-oil biofuel use at 17.8 billion pounds and meal production at 65.8 million short tons. But projected meal exports of 22.7 million tons, rising oil stocks and additional global rapeseed and sunflowerseed supply temper the edge. [USDA September WASDE](https://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/wasde0926.pdf)

The curve is also mixed. At 11:59 a.m., standard soybean oil was 67.26¢ for December, 67.49¢ for January and 67.76¢ for March—about 0.50¢ of December-to-March carry. Meal was $360.50 in December and $360.10 in March, only a $0.40 prompt inversion. This is not a strong immediate-tight-oil / abundant-meal confirmation.

September 22 futures-only positioning is similarly two-sided: oil managed money remained net long but reduced length, while meal length increased. That leaves possible meal-long liquidation, but also weaker fund support for oil. The data were released September 25 and are context, not a live trigger. [CFTC agriculture positioning](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/ag_sf.htm)

### Payoff and sensitivity

For three pairs, package sensitivity is **+$180 per 1¢ rise in oil** and **−$30 per $1 rise in meal**.

| January 27 scenario | Weight | Oil / meal | Gross P&L from noon |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Trade bull | 35% | 72¢ / $345 | **+$1,216.20** |
| Base | 40% | 68¢ / $360 | **+$46.20** |
| Trade bear / stop scenario | 25% | 64.56¢ / $382 | **−$1,233.00** |

The probability-weighted result is only **+$135.90 gross**. Moving ten points from the favorable to the adverse case turns it to roughly **−$109**. The target-to-stop payoff from current marks is about 0.99× before costs.

One additional whole pair could fit the starter ceiling arithmetically: current-mark loss to the paired stop scenario is $411 per pair, or about $514 with the 1.25 risk buffer. But fit is not edge. Thin exact-micro liquidity, strong shipment evidence and imminent USDA data argue for keeping three pairs rather than increasing risk.

**Decision: Hold +3 `MZLH27` / −3 `MZMH27`; no add.** Exit the whole package if the stored ratio stop is reached or if sustained meal tightness defeats the co-product-surplus thesis. Exit by January 27, ahead of February termination; no roll is planned.

## 3. Challenger scan: risk units fit, entries do not

| Market | Current evidence | Whole-contract test | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro WTI | WTI $94.11 at 10:27; delayed Nov/Dec proxies $95.38/$91.16 | One MCL is 100 barrels; every $1 stop move is $100 | **Wait; avoid chasing backwardation** |
| Micro Gold | Exact 4,188.0 at 5:52; generic gold remained sharply lower near noon | One MGC is 10 oz; a $155 stop is about $1,550 raw risk | **Wait; falling-knife long and late short both unattractive** |
| Micro S&P | Cash equities weaker; a liquid December micro can fit starter risk | One MES is $5/point; a 158-point stop is about $790 raw risk | **Wait for breadth failure and a rejected rebound** |
| 10-year yield / Treasury | Yields remain elevated; hikes substantially priced | One yield future can fit, but monthly roll and quote depth matter | **Wait; no chase** |
| December wheat | 690¢ standard contract; global stocks higher, but September 30 gap risk | 39.5¢ stop is $1,975 raw and about 0.247% buffered | **Wait; strongest agriculture challenger, not Enter** |

Energy is the most tempting rejected challenger. WTI and Brent were up 1.8% and 2.2% at 10:27 a.m., while delayed ladders showed roughly **$4.22** November–December WTI backwardation and **$7.73** Brent backwardation. The market is already charging heavily for prompt barrels. At the same time, September regional exports recovered materially, though they remained below pre-war levels. [Reuters oil update](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/oil-rebounds-after-trump-rejects-iran-peace-deal-2026-09-27/), [Reuters flow report](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/mideast-oil-exports-rebound-september-saudi-arabia-boosts-shipments-2026-09-28/)

That combination favors **Wait**, not Enter: scarcity is real, but expensive carry and partial physical normalization leave poor asymmetry. A potential U.S. diesel-export restriction adds a two-sided policy risk because domestic product prices and refinery runs could diverge from global crude. No ban is assumed. [Reuters diesel-policy report](https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/talk-us-export-ban-diesel-deepens-us-crude-futures-discount-global-benchmark-2026-09-25/)

Gold is also rejected. Higher yields validated the bearish mechanism, but a roughly 4% day makes a new short late while the absence of real-yield stabilization makes a long premature. One micro can fit a 0.25% starter budget with a meaningful stop; the expected edge does not.

## Bottom line

Hold both open positions, but do not confuse “Hold” with equal confidence. The euro short remains the cleaner trade: the mechanism is intact, the exact contract moved in favor and the forward payoff is still positive. The soybean-oil/meal basket remains profitable and above its stop, but strong export inspections and sub-1× current target-to-stop economics make it the fragile leg.

No challenger offers a better combination of priced-in surprise, whole-contract risk and current evidence. The next decision points are JOLTS, PCE and the September 30 USDA reports.

All performance and executions are simulated. Assumed fills are not exchange executions; proxies are explicitly labeled, and no real order was placed.
