# Copper’s split signal: demand cools, scarcity deepens

**Research cutoff: September 24, 2026, 6:02 a.m. Toronto**

ATG holds all three simulated positions without adding: long three December Micro Copper futures, short eight December Micro Euro futures and short one December Chicago wheat future. No new paper transaction is justified.

The important change is inside copper’s mechanism. Chinese pre-holiday restocking cooled, Shanghai premiums eased and rod orders weakened—but mine-concentrate scarcity intensified. That combination supports retaining a small, stop-defined long while rejecting an average-down. German business confidence improved, limiting conviction in the euro short. Wheat rose above the assumed fill, yet diplomacy has not reopened deep-sea Black Sea capacity.

Current delayed marks imply gross open P&L of approximately **−$446.25**: copper **−$401.25**, euro **+$80**, wheat **−$125**. The deterministic paper portfolio marks NAV at **$999,427.75**, with cumulative net P&L **−$572.25** and no pending orders. Copper uses `HGZ26` as an explicitly labeled same-month proxy for `MHGZ26`; euro and wheat use exact held contracts.

## Decision board

| Position or challenger | Current observation | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| `+3 MHGZ26` | `HGZ26` proxy **6.7385**, versus 6.792 fill | **Hold; no add.** Stop 6.60, target 7.20, exit November 13 |
| `−8 M6EZ26` | Exact **1.1414**, versus 1.1422 fill | **Hold; no add.** Stop 1.1550, target 1.1150, exit November 30 |
| `−1 ZWZ26` | Exact **710.75¢**, versus 708.25¢ fill | **Hold; no add before export sales.** Stop 738.50¢, target 648.50¢, exit November 23 |
| December 10-year note | `TYZ26` 104.906 at 5:52 a.m. Toronto | **Wait.** Rate repricing is advanced and claims plus the seven-year auction remain ahead |
| S&P 500 | `ESZ26` 7,719.25 at 5:49 a.m. | **Wait.** Higher rates hurt, but a standard contract is not a micro fill and trade/AI upside remains |
| WTI/products | `CLX26` $93.75; November–December backwardation about $2.93 | **Wait.** Impaired Hormuz traffic and backwardation make a short hazardous |
| Natural gas | `NGX26` $3.193 | **Wait for storage.** No pre-release edge was verified |
| Aluminum | Strong pre-holiday inventory draw; no qualifying exact futures quote | **Watch.** Best physical challenger, but not ready to displace copper |

## Copper: the contradiction is the thesis

The freshest verified same-month proxy is **$6.7385/lb for `HGZ26` at 5:41 a.m. EDT**, with a 6.7250–6.7970 range. Three micros therefore show about **−$401.25 gross** against the 6.792 assumed fill. From the mark, the 6.60 stop risks another $1,038.75 while the 7.20 target offers $3,461.25. [Delayed December copper](https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/futures/HGZ26)

The near-term Chinese signal deteriorated. Shanghai spot premium fell to **1,315 yuan/t**, down 25 on the day and from 1,375 on Tuesday. Shanghai inventory rose 2,400 tonnes from Monday to 46,300 while Jiangsu fell by the same amount, leaving the combined total flat. Imported arrivals began easing availability and pre-holiday restocking cooled. Fabrication data show the same front-loading. Cathode-rod operating rates rose to **69.9%**, up 4.08 percentage points weekly but down 3.88 points yearly. New orders weakened and finished-goods stocks increased. SMM expects next week’s operating rate to fall to 59.13% around the holidays; that is a forecast, not an observed collapse. Upstream evidence moved the other way. SMM’s concentrate index fell to **−$224.53/dmt from −$221.89**, while inventory across eleven ports fell 112,800 physical tonnes to 698,200. Those figures are tonnes of concentrate, not contained copper. Smelters showed greater willingness to cut output. This deepens the feedstock-scarcity argument and prevents a clean exit or reversal. December–March copper contango was approximately **10.5¢/lb**, or 1.56% over roughly three months. That is not an automatic realized loss, but it means the constructive four-month story cannot be extended through a roll for free. The existing position exits November 13. ### Copper payoff to November 13

| Path | Weight | Exit | P&L from current proxy | P&L from fill |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| Scarcity or disruption dominates | 25% | 7.20 | +$3,461.25 | +$3,060 |
| Scarcity offsets holiday demand lull | 35% | 6.85 | +$836.25 | +$435 |
| Demand, rates and arrivals dominate | 40% | 6.60 | −$1,038.75 | −$1,440 |

Expected gross value is approximately **+$341 from entry**, or **+$743 from the current proxy mark**. Shifting ten probability points from the target to the stop cuts value by $450; shifting twenty points makes forward value negative. That is a hold/no-add profile. Trim or exit if premiums and orders keep weakening while inventories rebuild and smelter cuts fail to appear.

## Euro: positive carry, better German data

Exact `M6EZ26` was **1.1414 at 4:50 a.m. CDT**, unchanged from the midnight mark and 0.0008 below the 1.1422 short fill. Eight micros show **+$80 gross**. The session range of 1.1407–1.1436 reached neither stop nor target. [Delayed Micro Euro](https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/futures/M6EZ26)

The U.S.–euro policy differential still supports the short: the Fed midpoint is 3.875% versus the ECB deposit rate at 2.50%. The upward December–March futures curve is consistent with that gap, but carry is embedded in pricing and must not be added twice to P&L.

New European evidence is a genuine counterweight. Germany’s Ifo business-climate index improved to **89.9 versus 89.0 expected and 88.8 previously**; both current conditions and expectations improved. The ECB’s newly published bulletin also emphasizes resilient activity and no precommitted rate path, although most of its data were already cut off on September 9. Europe is not collapsing. [Ifo](https://www.ifo.de/en/survey/ifo-business-climate-index-germany), [ECB bulletin](https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/economic-bulletin/html/eb202606.en.html)

September 15 noncommercial positioning was net short 26,993 euro contracts, and shorts had been covering. That is stale relative to this week’s moves, but it rejects any “crowded euro long” premise. [CFTC euro](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/deacmesf.htm)

### Euro payoff to November 30

| Path | Weight | Exit | Gross P&L from entry |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Energy pressure and U.S. advantage persist | 25% | 1.1150 | +$2,720 |
| Carry wins; European resilience limits decline | 50% | 1.1300 | +$1,220 |
| Growth/rate convergence or relief rally | 25% | 1.1550 | −$1,280 |

Weighted gross value is **+$970 from entry**, or **+$890 from the current mark**. A ten-point shift from base to bear lowers value by $250. Hold, but do not add into existing weakness; claims, housing, the seven-year auction and Friday’s durable-goods data can change the relative-rate case.

## Wheat: adverse price action without physical resolution

The exact `ZWZ26` completed one-minute bar at the strict 6:00 a.m. Toronto reference was **710.75¢/bu**. A later last was 710.50¢ with a 710.50/710.75 bid/ask. Against the 708.25¢ assumed fill, the short is approximately **−$125 gross**. March wheat was 726.00¢, leaving 15.50¢ of indicative contango. [IBKR market-data methodology](https://www.interactivebrokers.com/campus/ibkr-api-page/web-api-trading/)

The fresh Black Sea update is diplomatic, not physical. Turkey pressed Ukraine on commercial-vessel safety and offered support for negotiations, but there is no accepted corridor, insurer reopening or observed deep-sea throughput recovery. Alternative land and river routes remain capacity-constrained. [Turkish readout](https://www.anadoluajansi.gov.tr/en/turkiye/turkiye-ready-to-support-efforts-for-lasting-peace-between-russia-and-ukraine-president-erdogan/4067144)

No new export, crop-loss or positioning datum within the window invalidated the supply-premium-unwind thesis. The next decision point is USDA export sales at 8:30 a.m. Toronto. Waiting for the actual release is an economic choice, not an execution formality: demand composition can change the probability tree.

### Wheat payoff to November 23

| Path | Weight | Exit | Gross P&L from entry |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Failed talks and importer replenishment | 30% | 738.50¢ | −$1,512.50 |
| Partial rerouting and weak U.S. demand | 45% | 685.00¢ | +$1,162.50 |
| Workable corridor and alternative supply | 25% | 648.50¢ | +$2,987.50 |

Weighted gross value is **+$816 from entry**, or **+$941 from the current mark**. Moving ten points from the target case to the stop case cuts value by $450. Hold one contract, but do not add before export sales. A verified demand surge combined with sustained price and nearby-spread tightening would justify an early exit rather than mechanically waiting for 738.50.

## Challenger scan and portfolio interaction

- `TYZ26` at 104.906 is the cleanest fresh rate-short challenger, but the selloff is already advanced and event risk is concentrated in today’s claims and seven-year auction.
- `ESZ26` at 7,719.25 reflects higher discount rates, but AI resilience and trade-deal optionality weaken a fresh index short. A standard-contract quote also cannot be relabeled as a micro fill.
- November WTI near $93.75 remained almost $2.93 above December. Reuters counted ten commodity-vessel transits through Hormuz versus a ten-day average near seventeen; this is impaired traffic, not proof that crude exports normalized. Directional oil shorts remain exposed to gap risk.
- Natural gas lacks a new weather or storage surprise before the 10:30 a.m. release. No entry is justified in advance.
- Aluminum recorded an unusually large two-week pre-holiday stock draw, making it the strongest physical challenger. Without a qualifying timestamped exact futures quote and a post-holiday demand test, it remains a watch rather than a trade.

The three held positions remain partially offsetting rather than independent. Higher U.S. rates help the euro short and hurt copper. Chinese slowing can hurt copper without helping wheat. A Black Sea supply shock can hurt wheat while leaving the macro positions intact. Gross exposure is roughly $200,000, modeled margin reserve is $36,000 and buffered open risk remains approximately **0.54% of NAV**. Stops can gap.

Chinese holiday demand, Black Sea loadings, mine disruptions, refined-copper tariff policy and Hormuz shipping remain unscheduled risks. The four-month research horizon does not authorize holding these specific December contracts through their planned exits.

This is research and a simulated paper portfolio, not investment advice. Delayed marks and the labeled copper proxy make valuation indicative; assumed paper executions are not real or executable market fills.
