# Diversification absorbs copper weakness

**Research cutoff: September 24, 2026, 12:05 a.m. Toronto**

ATG holds all three existing simulated positions without adding: long three December Micro Copper futures, short eight December Micro Euro futures and short one December Chicago wheat future. The first six-hour review shows why the positions were separated by mechanism. Copper is down on its same-month standard-contract proxy, while the exact euro and wheat contracts partly offset that loss.

No new paper trade is justified. The copper physical signal remains credible but geographically concentrated; the euro short still expresses the U.S.–euro policy gap most cleanly; wheat remains a tactical premium-unwind trade with meaningful supply-shock risk. Current marks imply gross open P&L of approximately **−$100**: copper **−$255**, euro **+$80** and wheat **+$75**. The deterministic paper book therefore marks NAV at **$999,774**, with cumulative net P&L **−$226** and no pending instructions.

The copper mark is an explicitly labeled `HGZ26` same-month proxy for `MHGZ26`; euro and wheat use exact contracts. These are delayed research marks, not broker executions, and no real orders were placed.

## Decision board

| Position or challenger | Current evidence | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| `+3 MHGZ26` | `HGZ26` proxy **6.7580**, versus 6.792 fill | **Hold; no add.** Stop 6.60, target 7.20, exit November 13 |
| `−8 M6EZ26` | Exact **1.1414**, versus 1.1422 fill | **Hold; no add.** Stop 1.1550, target 1.1150, exit November 30 |
| `−1 ZWZ26` | Exact **706.75¢**, versus 708.25¢ fill | **Hold; no add.** Stop 738.50¢, target 648.50¢, exit November 23 |
| Treasury futures | Long-end yields remain high, but December notes rebounded overnight | **Wait.** Do not chase a repriced rate short before claims and the seven-year auction |
| Equity indices | `ESZ26` 7,757.75 and `NQZ26` 30,694.25 | **Wait.** Trade and growth upside make a fresh short less clean than euro |
| WTI/products | November–December WTI backwardation about $2.59/bbl | **Wait.** Physical tightness conflicts with crude builds and geopolitical jump risk |
| Natural gas | November 3.186 versus December 3.525 | **Wait for storage.** It is the strongest conditional challenger, not a pre-release entry |
| Gold | `GCZ26` $4,318.10 | **Avoid immediate re-entry.** Rate pressure improved the short case, but no superior fresh catalyst was verified |

## Copper: a location squeeze, not a global shortage

The freshest verified mark is **6.7580/lb for `HGZ26` at September 23, 11:39 p.m. EDT**, used only as a same-month standard-to-micro proxy. The session range was 6.7555–6.7970. Against the 6.792 assumed micro fill, three contracts show about **−$255 gross**. From this mark, downside to the 6.60 stop is about $1,185; upside to 7.20 is about $3,315. [Delayed December copper](https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/futures/HGZ26)

Physical evidence still supports holding. Shanghai cathode premiums averaged **1,375 yuan/t on September 22, up 550 yuan/t in a day**, and the SHFE front/next spread was 430–610 yuan/t backwardated. That points to near-term local availability pressure. Yet the same source warned that high outright prices and premiums can suppress downstream buying, especially when pre-holiday stocking has pulled demand forward. [SMM physical market](https://news.metal.com/newscontent/104129359-tight-supply-coupled-with-pre-holiday-stockpiling-drives-shfe-copper-premiums-sharply-higher-smm-copper-morning-meeting-notes)

The broader inventory picture is mixed. LME stocks were **252,500 tonnes on September 23**, down 1,750 on the day but still 19,000 above September 1. LME cash copper was $77/t above three months, a meaningful immediate-delivery premium. Reuters also reported that roughly half of LME inventory was earmarked for withdrawal while COMEX held 69% of about one million tonnes monitored across the major exchanges. The variant view is therefore not “the world has run out of copper”; it is that ex-U.S. availability can stay tight long enough to support price before U.S. inventory or weaker demand closes the gap. Positioning limits conviction. September 15 managed money was net long **65,106** standard copper contracts, although that was down 17,048 week over week. The long is less crowded than it was, not contrarian. [CFTC metals](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/other_lf.htm)

### Copper payoff to November 13

| Path | Weight | Exit | Gross P&L from entry |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Regional squeeze persists | 25% | 7.20 | +$3,060 |
| Tightness persists but rally stalls | 30% | 6.90 | +$810 |
| Holiday demand fades or macro pressure wins | 40% | 6.60 | −$1,440 |
| Gap through the stop | 5% | 6.45 | −$2,565 |

Weighted gross value is about **+$304 from entry**, or **+$559 from the current proxy mark**. Move ten probability points from the target path to the normal-stop path and value falls $450. That sensitivity supports holding three micros, not adding. Exit early if Shanghai/Yangshan premiums reverse alongside sustained inventory rebuilding or if tariff clarity releases U.S. inventory into the tight regions. The four-month copper view can outlive this position, but December exposure ends by November 13 unless a new roll is independently approved. ## Euro: still the cleanest policy-differential expression

Exact `M6EZ26` traded **1.1414 at September 23, 10:50 p.m. CDT**, with session range 1.1407–1.1424. Eight shorts show about **+$80 gross** versus the 1.1422 assumed fill. The original stop/target payoff remains $1,280 down versus $2,720 up; from the current mark it is $1,360 down versus $2,640 up. [Delayed Micro Euro](https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/futures/M6EZ26)

The U.S. activity and inflation surprise that motivated the entry remains relevant. September 23 composite PMI reached 58.4 and price pressure accelerated, reinforcing a higher U.S. rate path. But this is a relative trade, not a claim that Europe is collapsing: euro-area composite PMI also improved to 53.1, and the ECB has raised its deposit rate to 2.50%. [Federal Reserve policy](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20260916a.htm), [ECB decision](https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/pr/date/2026/html/ecb.mp260910~314e508016.en.html)

The December-to-March micro curve is about **44–45 pips upward**, consistent with U.S. rates above euro-area rates. Convergence can help a short December future, but it is not guaranteed income. September 15 CFTC data showed noncommercial euro net short **26,993** contracts; shorts had been covering, yet the position was not contrarian. [Micro Euro curve](https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/futures/M6EZ26/contracts), [CFTC euro](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/deacmelf.htm)

### Euro payoff to November 30

| Path | Weight | Exit | Gross P&L from entry |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| U.S.-relative strength persists | 40% | 1.1150 | +$2,720 |
| Slow decline; time exit | 35% | 1.1330 | +$920 |
| Policy/growth convergence or relief rally | 25% | 1.1550 | −$1,280 |

Weighted gross value is about **+$1,090 from entry**, or **+$1,010 from the current mark**. Shifting ten points from target to stop cuts value by $400; a one-cent adverse move costs $1,000 across the eight micros. Hold, but do not add near the overnight low. Claims, Thursday’s seven-year auction, Friday durable goods and inflation expectations are the next tests.

## Wheat: weak U.S. demand versus real squeeze risk

Exact `ZWZ26` was **706.75¢/bu at September 23, 10:34 p.m. CT**; March was 722.50¢, leaving **15.75¢ of carry**. The existing short shows about **+$75 gross**. Contango supports the absence of an immediate Chicago delivery squeeze, but it does not prove that wheat is freely available to importers. [December wheat and curve](https://farmbucks.com/futures/grain-oilseeds/wheat-srw)

The short case begins with demand. USDA recorded **335,253 tonnes** inspected in the week ended September 17, versus 472,980 previously and 939,803 a year earlier. Marketing-year inspections were 6.028 million tonnes versus 8.799 million, down 31.49%. September WASDE also lifted global ending stocks to 276.3 million tonnes. [USDA inspections](https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/wa_gr101.txt), [September WASDE](https://www.usda.gov/oce/commodity/wasde/wasde0926.pdf)

The countercase is too strong to add. COCERAL cut EU+UK nondurum wheat to 137.5 million tonnes, Russia’s winter-grain planting was reported 14% below last year, and impaired Black Sea loading raises the chance that buyers who delayed replenishment will be forced back into the market. September 15 managed money was only 3,674 contracts net short on a futures-only basis, so crowding is not extreme enough to create a contrarian cushion. [EU crop estimate](https://www.world-grain.com/articles/23251-coceral-lowers-eu-grain-output-forecast), [Russian sowing](https://blog.sizov.report/russias-winter-crop-sowing-pace-is-the-slowest-since-2013/), [CFTC wheat](https://www.cftc.gov/dea/futures/ag_sf.htm)

### Wheat payoff to November 23

| Path | Weight | Exit | Gross P&L from entry |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| Shipping relief plus weak exports | 30% | 648.50¢ | +$2,987.50 |
| Slow premium decay; time exit | 35% | 690.00¢ | +$912.50 |
| Export squeeze or supply disruption | 35% | 738.50¢ | −$1,512.50 |

Weighted gross value is about **+$686 from entry**, or **+$611 from the current mark**. A ten-point shift from target to stop cuts value by $450. Hold one contract, but do not add before export sales. Exit early if verified large purchases coincide with sustained price recovery and nearby-spread tightening; do not wait mechanically for 738.50 if the physical thesis fails.

## Cross-market scan and portfolio interaction

No challenger improved the portfolio more than retaining the current expressions:

- A short December Treasury note is conceptually clean after hawkish U.S. data, but `ZNZ26` had already absorbed a large selloff and rebounded overnight. Entering before claims and the seven-year auction offers poor timing.
- Equity shorts duplicate the rate shock but retain trade-deal and AI upside risk. They are less direct than the euro short.
- WTI’s November–December backwardation near $2.59/bbl contradicts a simple inventory-led short. Crude builds, product draws and geopolitical shipping risk pull in opposite directions.
- Natural gas is the strongest conditional challenger after storage. A smaller-than-normal injection could validate winter tightness, while shoulder-season demand still argues against chasing price before the release.
- Gold is a cleaner macro short than a fresh long under high rates, but the crowded/rate thesis has already moved substantially and no new catalyst justifies rotation.

The positions are diversified, not independent. A stronger dollar can benefit the euro short while hurting copper; a reflation shock can help copper and hurt euro; a crop or shipping shock can hurt wheat without invalidating the macro legs. Gross notional remains about $200,000, modeled margin reserve $36,000 and buffered stop risk about 0.54% of NAV. None of the stops is guaranteed against a gap.

GDP and PCE are due September 30, outside this 72-hour window. Chinese holiday demand, trade negotiations, Black Sea loadings and Middle East shipping remain unscheduled risks.

This is research and a simulated paper portfolio, not investment advice. Delayed marks and the labeled copper proxy make the valuation indicative; assumed executions are not real or executable market fills.
